Christmas decorations

Do you buy new decorations every few years, or do you add to your collection over time?

We reuse our decorations each year, but we buy one “special” bauble every year.

I prefer a traditional Christmas theme, personally.

Every year I say I'm not buying any more decorations but yet again I have bought more😂

We had a tree fall over last year and some decorations got broken so I've bought some non-breakable for that tree.

I've bought some additional for the other tree as well - I just can't help it, but it's just a few extra each year 😂

DappledThings · 28/11/2024 19:17

DC are allowed to buy one extra every year when we get the tree. Sometimes buy random ones from National Trust places through the year.

Never had a theme. Coordinated trees look awful and sad.

StormingNorman · 28/11/2024 19:20

I always seem to buy more although I already have too many.

Jeezitneverends · 28/11/2024 19:23

I’ve built them up over the past 35 years since I had my first Christmas tree in my flat. I buy the occasional new bauble, but not necessarily every year.
It’s a very traditional tree, I’m always drawn to these kinds of decorations

okayhescereal · 28/11/2024 19:26

I've been buying or making a decoration which reminds me of something which happened that year, which means we have some random decorations on the tree! Think I'll have to switch it up at some point as the tree will be full. Also aware kids will probably start making stuff at school at some point so the collection will grow!

Definitely don't buy fully new ones every year or have a theme. Sounds like effort!!

CandyCane457 · 28/11/2024 19:52

I have red and gold base baubles, and then every year my mum and I go to a huge garden centre near us, where they do amazing decorations all separated into different themes. I buy a couple of every year, but getting to the point now where they don’t all fit on the tree 🤣

sharpclawedkitten · 30/11/2024 17:42

We reuse ours but buy the odd new thing.

Apparently loads of people just throw away their decorations each year! How wasteful is that!

Camembertcufflinks · 30/11/2024 18:08

Reuse a mix of inherited, hand made, and decs from my childhood. The kids get a new decoration most years and have made some. It's a jumble which is pretty much the same every year, but prefer that to overly coordinated and less wasteful (and cheaper!) than changing themes.

stargirl1701 · 30/11/2024 18:09

We have a huge mix - made from the DC, gifted to us and ones we bought. I like a family feel tree not a theme.

Scutterbug · 30/11/2024 18:11

Reuse most years but every few years I might have a change of colour. But then I sell/gift the older ones.

Currently using a gold/silver theme. Living room is grey and yellow and black so it blends in quite well.

FaceLikeACrackedScreen · 30/11/2024 18:12

Nothing matches on my tree which is exactly how I like it. We usually buy a couple of decs each year. It includes everything from 20 year old Hama bead decs, things from all over the world on our travels, to the first bauble I ever bought from BHS in Walthamstow 35 years ago on my first Christmas away from home.

NCTDN · 30/11/2024 18:14

I've started buying a bauble from anywhere I go on holiday (not always that way though!) and wish I'd started doing this long ago.

DisforDarkChocolate · 30/11/2024 18:16

I have so many when we moved house the removals men were amazed. I still bought some this year. We're moving in a couple of weeks and there is room for at least two trees 🎄 🎄

I don't get rid of any, I just like a choice.

StrawberryWater · 30/11/2024 18:20

I add to my collection every year. It's a mixture of old family heirloom decorations, new stuff and stuff I've bought.

I get them for free and just end up with a massive amount. I actually have 2 trees (one for each reception room) now because of it lol.

Bippityboppitybooo · 30/11/2024 18:20

I bought some base disco balls for this year, but our others are all individually bought over 10 years, or made by me or the kids. I made a bunch of felt animals before first child became mobile so there would be safe ones for him to play with, so we have whales and fish etc. We usually add a couple of new ones each year too. I love it, hate a matching tree!

Tel12 · 30/11/2024 18:24

I've got lots but I've had many years to build them up. I've a new tree this year and I've been buying tiny baubles, mainly gold and bronze. I usually add some larger reds for a bit of impact. Will see how it looks when it's decorated.

Bbq1 · 30/11/2024 18:24

Our tree is 25 years old, bought the year we were married. I love it and it is covered with our wonderful colourful memories of Christmases past with a bauble for every year of ds's life, Dec's we bought when we married and baubles from my 7O/80's childhood Christmases and baubles special to us. I usually buy a new bauble for ds still and add a few new cecs here and there but that's it.

TheGriffle · 30/11/2024 18:25

I add to my collection every year in the sales after Christmas so when we get them out again in December it’s exciting remembering what I’ve bought. My tree decs are an eclectic mix of all sorts which makes me love it even more. My girls each pick a new bauble out every year as well.

PastaAndProse · 30/11/2024 18:42

We have the same every year, base colours are red and white then we have a random assortment of handmade decorations from DS since he started nursery/school which I imagine will continue to be added to over the years.

Oblomov24 · 30/11/2024 18:43

Nope. Been using the same stuff forever.

We tend to have the same that we just add to here and there. We get one new bauble a year, normally linked to what happened that year, in terms of life events.

abigaail · 01/12/2024 08:36

We have tonnes of tree decorations and 4 Xmas trees. Every year I'll decide on the theme and which tree to use. I'll pick a colour scheme from the huge collection we already have or buy a few new ones if we don't already have it. This year I've bought new lights in a pastel rainbow colour. I'll buy a new living room decoration every year. This year it's a gingerbread rat! And we all pick one new decoration to add to the tree from a local garden centre. These are our "special" (expensive) decorations as opposed to the cheap tree filler coloured baubles. I will also redo our homemade wreath this year as it needs some tlc

DisforDarkChocolate · 01/12/2024 09:53

Next year I'm planning a dark green and gold theme, that will mean buying dark green decorations. I'm very excited.
