Christmas decs! How early is early?

Hi, my neighbour has already put up her Xmas decorations. I feel this is way too early, am I wrong to be annoyed? She did it last year aswell and as it was her first Christmas since moving in I didn't say a thing but she's done it again! I just think doing it to soon just drags it out, I get sick of looking at them! 🙈

I actually agree with you but there is a part of me that thinks many years ago when I had a troubled neighbour I would have been so jealous of you for only having that as a problem. Now I’m grateful to you for making me appreciate that’s over. As for your problem It’s a shame because it does make it white noise for some that love the holiday season.

You're not wrong to be annoyed, entirely your choice about what you choose to get annoyed about.

If your neighbours Christmas decorations is a good one for you to get riled up about then go for it. Personally I think that December is good for Christmas, but what other people set as a good date is absolutely none of my business. Should they wish to strap an inflatable Santa to their chimmey at Easter, go for it, I'll be keeping my beak out.

Well, before Halloween is too early but what can you do?? I like how people put them up at different times as I like seeing more and more go up as it gets closer to Christmas and spotting new ones but it’s the last weekend in November for me.

Twistybranch · 29/10/2024 17:11

Stupidly early but they may have reasons why they do it in Oct.

I enjoy autumn and like to stretch it out as much as possible. I don’t do Xmas decorations until the second week of Dec. The built up to Xmas has really become a chore and a few years ago I cut back heavily on the decorations/ traditions. Makes it less stressful and more enjoyable.

taggy321 · 29/10/2024 17:14

Are they not for Divali?

LastNightMyPJsSavedMyLife · 29/10/2024 17:38

Well it was very restrained of you to not say anything last year but you really must go and say something now. Please Op. Then come back with a flea in your ear and tell us how it went.

coxesorangepippin · 29/10/2024 17:45

1st Dec

iwentjasonwaterfalls · 29/10/2024 17:51

Ours are going up on Saturday.

A number of reasons why:

  • I'm usually too busy over Christmas to get properly excited, this year is quieter for many reasons and I'm making the most of every second of the festive build up.
  • I have a brain tumour and life is too bloody short to worry what your neighbours think or post on Mumsnet about you having your decs up.
  • We like them
  • We love Christmas
  • It's our home.

If the neighbours don't like it they can sit and seethe, I'll be watching Muppets Christmas Carol on Saturday morning and won't hear them complain anyway.

mamakoukla · 29/10/2024 17:56

Oh well (shrug). Life is good if that’s what you’re getting tied up in knots about lol Around our parts, fair game after Remembrance Sunday. Was raised as a 12 days before/12 days after Christmas for decorations going up/down. Slowly have come to like/look forward to decorations and especially lights from mid November as the dark evenings have settled in

Pistolpunk · 29/10/2024 18:00

Her life and her choice. We never know what someone is going through or the reasons why trees and decorations go up early.

Whothefuckdoesthat · 29/10/2024 18:09

It’s a bit… weird to be annoyed by what someone else is doing inside their own home, unless there’s a massive drip feed coming where you announce that she covers the house in lights, has loud music and a laser show and encourages people to come and see them, so you can’t park outside your house and you have to put subtitles on your tv or have it at nan volume.

Whothefuckdoesthat · 29/10/2024 18:12

@iwentjasonwaterfalls

Enjoy your decorating and wishing you a healthy as possible and happy Christmas 🎄

Printedword · 29/10/2024 18:20

I think anything before 1st December is a bit early.

Residents of the Romsey area of Cambridge will know that a certain pub always has the full decs and exterior mural and lights in situ before Halloween. Long term Cambridge residents might remember that there was a pub called The Durham Ox that had a Christmas tree up all year round.

I also agree it's too early but i'm confused why you would be "annoyed" about it? It's her house and she can do what she wants with it? You definitely can't have a word with her about it??

Klippityklopp · 29/10/2024 20:13

Of course you don't say a thing, it's none of your business.
I think it's far too early but as long as she wasn't putting up the decorations in my living room it wouldn't impact me in anyway

Bestfootfwd · 29/10/2024 20:28

So early, it’s funny. It would probably be better for you to feel amused (and incredulous) rather than annoyed about it.

Floralnomad · 29/10/2024 21:24

I have no interest in anything the neighbours do if it doesn’t directly affect me so it wouldn’t bother me . Ours go up 30th November / 1december.

sprigatito · 29/10/2024 21:25

I let myself start furtively listening to Christmas carols after Halloween. Decorations not until December, but I'll be doing Christmassy cooking and craft stuff in November.

TheNoodlesIncident · 30/10/2024 10:19

Each to their own, eh? So sweet of you to not say anything last year when she had the temerity to put up Christmas decorations in her own house. You must have the patience of a saint

Mytinyman · 30/10/2024 10:22

Mine are going up a week on Saturday which is actually a week later than I would like but too busy this weekend to do it. Christmas is my favourite time of year and the lights/ tree make everything feel cosy and happy. We love it and they stay up until the new year. We don't get sick of them

Fontainebleau007 · 30/10/2024 10:35

It's her house and not impacting you so I don't know why you're annoyed about it?
I can't wait to put mine up!! Though will be end of November.
I have comments from people every year saying it's too early, 🙄 but I say it's nothing to with anyone else and if it makes me happy then why not? 😃
