Christmas jigsaw

Once a year, because I don't have time the rest of the year, I treat myself to a challenging but not impossible Christmas jigsaw.

This is my only indulgence whilst doing most for all. So I am very keen to keep up the chill time with Baileys I have carved out.

The image is important.

Ones that have made me most happy are:
Northern lights over a Christmas icy log cabin scene
Nordic houses with ice skating in front
Snow trees with houses with inviting lights on

Santa, twee at a minimum.

The ones I can see this year so far are either
Too easy
Too twee

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

You'd be surprised at how tricky a 500 piece Wentworth is. I usually rattle off a 1000 piece in three or four sessions (and I like tricky ones), but the cut of a wooden puzzle is completely different and challenging.

IDontKnowWhatYouMean · 04/10/2024 07:58

What about a wintery scene from a place you love visiting? Galison do 1000 piece Christmassy city scenes. We did the New York St Patrick’s Cathedral last year: https://amzn.eu/d/fxXKyJr.

Ravensburger The Christmas Library is a good one

I hadn't read the thread and I see quite a few folk have recommended Wentworth. I agree even the 500 piece ones are tricky. I have had two Wentworth 1000 piece ones. Now they are a challenge. Eye-wateringly expensive but you can get a good price for them on ebay if you re-sell.

I recommend the New Yorker puzzles. Not standard shaped pieces, well made, and always difficult. They have some lovely Christmas ones and some are available here.

Roystonv · 04/10/2024 08:13

As a pp said I have one I could send you only 500 pieces though, split into 4 different 'tasteful'! scenes. Also one of Mary and Joseph in the stable.

I always get a new ravensburger for Christmas and amazon often do offers on them

I've got a whole pile in the attic - if you live anywhere in reach of Oxfordshire happy to lend.

That's so generous HPFA, but I keep the finished item, cover it in glue and hang it on the wall as a decoration each year, so the collection is expanding, occasionally one gets destroyed, such is life!

This is the sort of difficulty I like, this is 1000 pieces so at the moment it might be my only option!

That's a good idea - buy on eBay. I bought a 1000 piece van Gogh and it took us between Christmas and new year to finish. Normally we can get through one in a couple of days. Some bits had us scratching our heads for ages. The joy of seeing how the pieces fit together is worth the cost. So interesting and creative

frozendaisy · 04/10/2024 13:01

This one also looks like a great Baileys challenge but it is bordering on the twee side.

Inside I am stamping my foot like a toddler because usually I don't have to compromise on not-twee, 1000 pieces or difficulty, but this year seems more of a struggle.

And the household is a much happier household with a Baileys jigsaw that ticks all the boxes. 🎄

Off to ebay!

One possible on ebay but at £95
I am prepared to spend an unreasonable amount of more time searching the internet

Although I will have to make a decision soon!

Then I move onto crackers which takes almost as long.........

If you go onto the Yorkshire Jigsaw puzzle store and filter under Christmas they have loads of designs for inspiration (and I’ve ordered from them a few times before too)

https://theyorkshirejigsawstore.co.uk/collections/christmas

Gibsons have quite a few Christmas ones out and their puzzles are great quality but they do tend to the twee side. But some I like; I bought a couple this year, and I really dislike “1950s housewife” type puzzles!

@Toomanysquishmallows - was just about to come on and suggest that. Laurence King do lots of beautiful jigsaws including that Christmas one. Well worth having a look at the website. We've had about half a dozen of them and everyone loves them. I'm intending to get the Book Lover's Christmas for Christmas and I've got the King Arthur one too for winter afternoons.

Love this thread! I’ve been looking as well.

the last puzzle I got was from Rest in Pieces but was sent straight from their wholesaler. Was filthy and the print was a bit fuzzy so it was disappointing.

NashvilleQueen · 04/10/2024 14:50

I always like Michael Storrings Christmas jigsaws. George of Whitstable is good for jigsaws.

frozendaisy · 04/10/2024 15:32

I have the Sherlock Laurence one waiting to be opened as I stupidly thought I would have time to mull over a jigsaw at other times, silly me! But I am keeping it more in hope than expectation! Did see a couple of potential puzzle books as stocking fillers so thanks for the link.

I am back gazing at jigsaws when I should be hanging out laundry and rolling out pizza dough, this is much, so much more enjoyable though. Perhaps I just need to browse jigsaws this year not actually do one.

This was not last year one before, I loved this it's totally random and makes little sense and my loving family swooped in and finished the fireworks after I had done the rest (the utter bastards!) but if anyone wants something a bit different.
