CHRISTMAS CLEANALONG

Hi all. So for the first time ever I will be hosting Christmas Day dinner in my home.

And to that end, I've decided to give my house a massive clean, declutter & reorganisation (very badly needed!).

I've worked out there are 16 weekends to Christmas (well actually 17 but I want to use the last one for food prep) so I'm dividing my house into 16 sections & going to spend one day every weekend on a different section.

I'm starting this weekend. Would anyone like to join?

@WhatdoesitmeanKeith

Christmas Clean-a-Long from last year ...........I'm sure there will be one this year Xmas Grin

peachgreen · 08/05/2025 21:27

I’m so delighted that this thread has been revived!

WhatdoesitmeanKeith · 08/05/2025 23:19

I’m delighted that @70isaLimitNotaTarget directed me here. Thanks again.

Alsonification · 09/05/2025 05:31

Well I’m delighted you all liked it so much that you’re back. I too, am glad it’s revived because I need it again.
after 25 years as a childminder, I am giving up minding kids and starting a new job as a receptionist in a weeks time. Next Friday, the 16th of May is my last day with the kids. As you can imagine, I have quite a lot of Childminding related decluttering to do. I have so many toys, cots, High chairs, garden toys, etc To sell/donate/recycle. It will probably take me till Christmas to finish it lol.

It sounds like a challenge @Alsonification , roll up your sleeves Xmas Grin
( Though its been over 7 years since I had guinea-pigs and I still have a couple of their garden runs in the garage .....!)

September is a good starting time and I found doing a couple of things off my list really helped , kept the momentum going .
I work PT ( 4 days) so try and get as much done on my At Home Day then have the weekend fairly free .

I am going through the shelves in the Utility (its a glorified cupboard off the kitchen ) the nice serving dishes live there . I;ve also got the Christmas Cupboard (one of the kitchen cupboards ) , got a few decorated plates there . I cannot recycle them as DD has claimed them when she leaves home Xmas Grin

Ideally , I'll have most of it done by early December . DS birthday but he just likes money not things .
DH, DD and I are going away for a few days end November .
We start December with the Dec 1st Boxes ..a tradition set in stone .

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 01/08/2025 23:05

As it is now August , I am bumping this thread up .

I have put a couple of bags into the charity shop and a bag out to recycle .
I have written a To-Do List for the weekend (all boring cleaning things that feel so much better when they're done with ) I've got one of those rechargeable whirling scrubby brushes which does make it a bit easier .

And I need to pack away some clothes that I won't need till next time I;m on holiday (which will be Aug 2026 )

swampwitch0 · 02/08/2025 09:00

Thanks @70isaLimitNotaTarget

swampwitch0 · 02/08/2025 09:06

I gave the kitchen a spring clean this week.
Oven, drawers, dw filter, even descaled the kettle and cleaned the tops of the upper units :)
Today I'm hoping to clean the skirting boards...they are awful 😖
I always take the conservatory apart and clean it in September once the kids are back at school...its a big job.
Couple of bits of wall need touching up with paint (sharpie marks).
Its stripping beds day today, too.
I ironed all the holiday clothes we took on holiday last night so that's done ✔️

GrannyWeatherwaxsBroomstick · 02/08/2025 11:18

So glad to have found this thread. I think I need to start with the utility room.

swampwitch0 · 02/08/2025 13:25

Ugh. I'm shattered!
Skirting boards in most rooms done.
Dh has just informed me he is painting the study at August bank holiday, so that can wait till then.
Bathroom tomorrow 😫
1 large bag of clothes for charity and 2 small bags for my neice.
I need dd to go through her vast make up stash too and see how much of that dn wants.
Still got the beds to remake but I think that's me done today! 😴

Afternoon!

Our big job this year is fitting a shower over the bath in the family bathroom. This is so two people can shower at once for when DS starts secondary in Sept and everyone needs to be getting ready at the same time. It's not cleaning, but it's a job to get done.

I'm rather sad and clean the skirting boards every week. I just find easier to do it when I clean the bathrooms (I essentially go through the whole of the visible woodwork in the house).

Edited

I need to do this again.
Its been a rough few months and I've let things slide...
I've downloaded the tomm app again.

NoWordForFluffy · 02/08/2025 19:38

It's difficult when there's other shit going on.

I hope things are better now, @swampwitch0. Xmas Smile

swampwitch0 · 02/08/2025 20:25

Thank you @NoWordForFluffy
Things are much better than they were.
Gcse results day in a couple of weeks 😬
Older dds postgrad finally done, so the job hunt needs to start - once she's done travelling and making up for lost time 😃

swampwitch0 · 03/08/2025 10:09

Bathroom tomorrow do today...
And dh has just informed me he wants me to do his tax return 🙄

swampwitch0 · 03/08/2025 10:09

to do today
Not enough coffee yet, obviously 😃☕️

swampwitch0 · 03/08/2025 15:06

Bathroom done. Such a hateful job 😖
Dd has sorted her bedroom out - only 3 bags of rubbish 😃
Need to get older dd to do hers once shes home.
I need to defrost the freezers too at some point. Argh.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 03/08/2025 18:31

Our fridge/freezer is old so the defrosting seems to be more regular . I need to wait till it's near empty , take everything frozen down to the garage freezer then arrange the absorbent mats and switch it off with the doors open.
There's always the fear it might not start up again Xmas Shock

Always nice when it's done though . I wash the fridge shelves and salad drawer and we try and eat any random freezer contents .

Once the August BH weekend is here I can put the CCA Plan in action .
Though I started by buying a bottle of Clementine juice in Asda so I can sample them all to decide which one to buy . (I think last year I decided they were all pretty much the same )

swampwitch0 · 03/08/2025 19:01

I hate defrosting. My old one was frost free which was great.
I've just ordered some stuff that's supposed to help clean shower glass.
Re installed the tomm app and that starts tomorrow.

NoWordForFluffy · 03/08/2025 19:10

Our freezer is allegedly frost free. Except it freezes up and stops cooling. So apparently it still needs defrosting (probably annually).

swampwitch0 · 04/08/2025 11:51

Well, first day of tomm app done.
I've done most of it, but some jobs aren't applicable.
I've got a lovely new wall planner for the study (academic year one)

PumpkinSpicedTea · 04/08/2025 14:27

Looks like we'll be hosting again this year (not official but I've been jokingly saying to my sister, who has just bought a house, that that'll be them hosting this year to which she replied "oh my partner is still going out to an Indian restaurant with their family so I'll be coming to you" 😂) so need to be more on it this year as hated the panicky feeling of not many weekends/days left to clean 😬

swampwitch0 · 04/08/2025 15:05

@PumpkinSpicedTea
Its always me that hosts.
Irritating as we don't have the largest house.
But 🤷‍♀️
So it'll be mum and pils xmas day then a family party on boxing day.
As dreadful as covid was, I rather relished our 2 quiet Christmases 😞

swampwitch0 · 05/08/2025 11:15

Where dod that weird emoji cond from!?
😬
