CHRISTMAS CLEANALONG

Hi all. So for the first time ever I will be hosting Christmas Day dinner in my home.

And to that end, I've decided to give my house a massive clean, declutter & reorganisation (very badly needed!).

I've worked out there are 16 weekends to Christmas (well actually 17 but I want to use the last one for food prep) so I'm dividing my house into 16 sections & going to spend one day every weekend on a different section.

I'm starting this weekend. Would anyone like to join?

My house is tiny so no point in joining in just yet! Just be sure to allow yourself at least one weekend off so you've got leeway in case of disaster.

gardenmusic · 28/08/2024 14:11

Yeeeeessss! Motivate me, please.

Alsonification · 28/08/2024 14:14

@Vroomfondleswaistcoat good idea.
Though some sections will be bigger than others, for example one section is the downstairs loo, which is way smaller than say the kitchen. So I'm hoping for some rest hahaha

@gardenmusic I need motivation too don't worry lol. My daughter is helping me. We've decided to start on the bigger areas now while we're full of energy Grin

I’d love to join!

Sideorderofchips · 28/08/2024 14:22

I would but by Christmas the initial places would be a mess again 😂😂

Alsonification · 28/08/2024 14:27

@rhubarbhandsoap welcome. We start this weekend if you're ready. Grin

@Sideorderofchips oh don't worry mine will too lol but I'm hoping there'll be slightly less clutter so will be easier to manage (she says hopefully!)

You just inspired me to clear out my thermals drawer!
Everything back (tidily!) in bar some too bobbly long johns.

OneHeartyCat · 28/08/2024 14:57

Oh goodness- inspire me please 😂

gardenmusic · 28/08/2024 15:08

in the same room, I am going to pull out the bed that has not been pulled out for months (guest room come office) and clean the skirting boards before vacuuming!
Hold me to account tomorrow, please!

rhubarbhandsoap · 28/08/2024 15:13

@Alsonification I am raring to go 😂 This Christmas board has me very motivated!!

What room are you doing first?

dudsville · 28/08/2024 15:20

I love this idea! I was motivated a few years ago to take AL for a week every March just to do the spring clean. I still had time to go to the gym, and to have time out to see friends or go out for meals, and it means that ordinary cleaning is easier. I thought this yr I might add a September deep clean, but maybe do it over the weekends.

lollyPaloozah · 28/08/2024 15:20

Yes I’ll join - although my house isn’t as big! lol
It sounds crazy, but I find buying a nice assortment of new cleaning products (maybe even a Christmas smell?) motivates me to clean more. Pop on some music or an audiobook, and I have to light candles when I’m finished to admire my hard work.

Alsonification · 28/08/2024 15:35

Oh I'm delighted to have you all along with me.
I'm going to post my list of sections to show you what I mean. Obviously tweak it to suit your space. I have the kitchen, utility room & my bedroom split over 2 weekends cos these are black spots Blush and will require a lot more work. lol.

  1. Kitchen part one
  2. Kitchen part two
  3. Sitting room
  4. Utility room part one
  5. Utility room part two
  6. Playroom
  7. Downstairs loo
  8. Larder
  9. Hallway incl under stairs press
10 Stairs/landing incl hotpress 11. Bathroom 12. My room part one 13. My room part two 14. En suite 15. Dd’s room 16. Ds’s room

I am starting with the big jobs first just because I feel like I'll lose momentum towards December so will be happy they're out of the way.

Sorry not sure why it went from bullet points to numbers lol.

Love the new cleaning products. I'll have to clean out my current cleaning press first though hahahaha

@gardenmusic fair play. Every little helps.

@dudsville that's a good idea. I love an aul spring clean. Though my house hasn't had a good one in a long time!

I'll join! We're not having guests over Christmas but I'd still like to spruce things up.

I plan to start outside though - garden tidy-up - but then a major sort out in kitchen and living room. Eldest DC decided to tidy their room (hurray) but put all the outgrown games and books in the living room! Other random clutter has accumulated on shelves and tables over the holidays and I'll be better able to relax in a comfy chair in a clean tidy space.

gardenmusic · 28/08/2024 18:55

I have washed my massive door curtains . They are currently drying - been very hot here today.
I won't have to do that again before Christmas. Rehanging them tomorrow will be a big and sweary job.

Good idea

HanKeeBee · 28/08/2024 20:38

This is funny as I resolved today to “declutter by Christmas” and was about to post a very similar thread but thought I would do a search for similar threads first!

I was hoping to recruit a few people to bore inspire each other with before and after photos as a form of accountability 😝

Seren78 · 28/08/2024 20:39

Obviously not🤷‍♀️

BishyBarnyBee · 28/08/2024 20:41

Love the idea of dividing the house into 16 sections. Pondering what my 16 would be. I'm in!

Midlifeshenanigans · 28/08/2024 20:47

I’m in- given the state of my house I fear that 16 days may not be enough but I can certainly make a dramatic improvement in that time

NoWordForFluffy · 28/08/2024 20:47

We only moved last Christmas, and I do generally keep up with cleaning even the skirting boards etc every week (it's new build, I feel like I need to keep it nice!).

I do have a to do list though:

a. Sort my drawers out and ditch old crappy socks / t-shirts etc to make space.
b. Tidy up the painting I've done, as some needs touching up.
c. Sort the garage so we can actually get the car into it when it's really cold.

It doesn't sound too bad, but I lack motivation!
