If you had turkey this year…

can you post what you had (eg whole bird/crown/breast), how many it was supposed to serve & how much meat there actually was?

Hoping I can eventually get it right one year! We had an M&S large turkey breast joint, was to serve 8-10 people. I also cooked a 750g gammon joint.

There were 5 of us. It was just enough for dinner on the day, meagre sandwiches on Boxing Day & mixed with leeks & mushrooms to make a pie. All gone now.

I’d have liked enough to make another round of sandwiches!

12.5 lb turkey and a large ham from the butcher. I asked the butcher to remove and partially debone the legs as they cook at a different rate. I stuffed the legs and crown. Fed 7 adults on xmas day and boxing day. DH and I also had turkey and ham with left over brusselss bubble and squeak and chips last night. I chopped up the remainder of the turkey to freeze for our dog and my in-laws cats today. Ham and cheese toasties for lunch today. There is a bit of ham left which I'm making into chicken and ham pie for the freezer. Best effort in a number of years in avoiding waste.

festivetinseling · 28/12/2023 15:28

We had a 4kg whole turkey, which served 4 on the day, with plenty left over for sandwiches that evening, and again on Boxing Day. I've also make a turkey & ham pie for 2 with one of the legs, and fed the cats so much of the stuff they now look at me aghast if I offer more. With the carcass and wings I made stock to turn into soup, and the other leg is in the freezer for future curries etc.

That size was fine for a household of 2 with 2 more adults on Christmas Day.

JaffavsCookie · 28/12/2023 19:26

8 kg turkey from local farm
served 12 on the day ( some big eaters in there)
3 roast dinner breakfasts ! on boxing day
turkey curry for 7 boxing day
3 left over portions of curry frozen
skin, neck etc scraps equivalent to 20 cat meals

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 28/12/2023 20:46

We had a 20lb turkey bought direct from a farm. Fed 9 of us Christmas Day. 7 on Boxing Day (cold cuts) with enough left over for some sandwhiches and a curry.

PurpleBugz · 28/12/2023 21:15

I ordered a crown and it was substituted for turkey breasts which I then over cooked and they were tough

BestIsWest · 28/12/2023 21:23

2.7 kg Turkey breast from local butcher. I’d ordered a 3.5 to 4kg one so was a bit disappointed .
However it fed 5 adults for lunch and 6 for leftovers on Boxing day (although 3 had very small portions) plus turkey sarnies for 5 so it was ok in the end.

mummyof2boys30 · 28/12/2023 21:29

3.5kg stuffed turkey crown
4 dinners christmas day
2 trays sandwiches boxing day
2 wraps and toastie boxing day
Large turkey curry for 4

We dont do ham or anything so just the turkey. I thought it was huge but not a crumb wasted.

MrsFloof · 28/12/2023 21:30

1.5kg turkey crown from butchers, did 3 of us on day, then 2 turkey and veg curries x 3, 1 turkey bubble and squeak and 2 turkey and coleslaw sandwiches

NCGrandParent · 28/12/2023 21:32

M&S crown with stuffing for 10-12. Served 12 with plenty leftovers for a large pie in the freezer. Also had pigs in blankets, extra stuffing, 2 types of potato, red cabbage, parsnips and carrots.

yikesanotherbooboo · 28/12/2023 21:53

Butcher's 5kg turkey, stuffed with sausage meat. There were 8 adults for Christmas lunch .We had a buffet on Boxing Day with ham and pork pie for 13 and we had the last remnants tonight as part of a cold spread for 5.

WombatBombat · 28/12/2023 23:25

2.6kg Turkey crown and 1.4kg rolled lamb.

4 adults and 3 kids for Christmas Day
2 adults took home leftovers for 2 meals.
Boxing Day sandwiches x2 and second roast for 2 adults and 1 kid.
27th sandwiches and roast dinner for 4 adults.
28th sandwiches x2 and it’s done.

Thanks to everyone who posted! I’ve been trying to avoid doing a whole bird but maybe that’s the best way to get more meat.
Or just forego Turkey altogether- I’d have got 4 nice chickens for what I paid for the turkey breast (£40)!
We had the ham, pigs in blankets, loads of veg & potatoes.
Sadly none of my offspring are interested in becoming vegetarian

Crown said it was for 7 to 9, 2.7kg. It fed 5 on Christmas day for lunch, sandwiches for 5 for supper, sandwiches and buffet the next day and the 27th lunch time at which point we threw out the remaining as we were all sick of it. Last year the same size crown didn't even get us past boxing day lunch.

TeenDivided · 29/12/2023 09:59

7.75kg. Plus ham and sausages.

So far it has done 2 meals for 3 people 25, 26, 27. Then yesterday a meal for 7.

So 25 meals so far....

We have sliced some off and put it in the freezer too.

newnamechangeforthisone · 29/12/2023 10:09

M&S roll thing here. Was yiny buy a sole delicious. Think I need two next year though. We did a M&S crown too which was meant to feed 11 but we got through that too. I'm
Never good at judging how long we can keep
Meat though.

SkankingWombat · 29/12/2023 10:11

We had a whole one. I ordered our usual 5kg, but the one that arrived was closer to 7. It was ridiculously huge. I can usually just about fit a tray of potatoes above it in the oven, but this one took up the whole space. It was also a nightmare to lift in and out of the oven to baste.
It fed 4 of us on Xmas day, 3 days of lunches for 4, a turkey & ham pie last night, and a few late night reheated leftovers 'snacks' (meals) for DH. The cats have eaten so much, one actually turned his nose up at a bit offered last night 😂 I have now stripped the rest of the meat and frozen it in 4 takeaway tubs. We also have 6 portions of stock frozen too. We always get bigger than we need as we like the leftovers, but this was an insane amount of turkey!

cloudtree · 29/12/2023 10:19

Our M&S crown was nice but it said it would feed 8-9. There's no way it would have. MIL is vegetarian and so there were only five of us eating turkey and PIL doesn't eat much anymore. So I'd say 4 and a half of us. There was also ham. There was plenty for the meal itself but then not much in the way of leftovers at all. DH and DC had what was left on boxing day but it wasn't enough for them each to have a full portion. Their measurements were off this year IMO.

Spacie · 29/12/2023 10:23

6kg bronze turkey from Tesco (serves 10-14 according to the label) and 1kg gammon
5 adults on christmas day
5 adults for cold sliced meat with bubble & squeak on boxing day
risotto for 3
curry for 3
some sandwiches - not sure how many they helped themselves
2 x 400g of mixed meat bagged up and frozen
2 wings and a drumstick also bagged up and frozen
1 carcass to make stock

All without a working fridge. 😩(Separate freezer to make lots of ice though)

ApolloandDaphne · 29/12/2023 10:27

We had a 5kg turkey. It served 8 on the day then did loads of sandwiches the next day then DH and I had it for dinner again on the 27th. The dog also got some.

Growlybear83 · 29/12/2023 10:28

I bought a whole organic halal turkey which weighed 6.4kg from a local-ish farm - my daughter was home for Christmas and is a Muslim. There were three of us for lunch, and my husband and I also had gammon, sausage meat, pigs in blankets, and stuffing as well as the vegetables. we had it cold with chips on Boxing Day and we've had about six fat sandwiches between us, a fricassee, and my husband had lots more turkey yesterday. There's plenty left for him to have another meal today and the rest will go in the soup, which should be ready this evening.

You know you can freeze the cooked meat instead of wasting it?

We were away in an Airbnb with an 8 hour drive. I hate waste but freezing wasn’t an option. Nor was cooking it into something else as we hadn’t bought enough tubs etc to cart it all back down the motorway.

madmumofteens · 29/12/2023 13:47

We had Morrisons turkey crown serves 4-7 people (£46) and their stuffed duck joint we had loads of turkey leftover fed 6 people had turkey curry next day 😘
