If you had turkey this year…

can you post what you had (eg whole bird/crown/breast), how many it was supposed to serve & how much meat there actually was?

Hoping I can eventually get it right one year! We had an M&S large turkey breast joint, was to serve 8-10 people. I also cooked a 750g gammon joint.

There were 5 of us. It was just enough for dinner on the day, meagre sandwiches on Boxing Day & mixed with leeks & mushrooms to make a pie. All gone now.

I’d have liked enough to make another round of sandwiches!

We had a Morrisons one this year - whole turkey, said it served 7-10. Did four of us with big appetites on Christmas Day (we have pigs in blankets, no other meat but stacks of stuffing and veg), five with bubble and squeak, pickles etc on Boxing Day and we still have loads left - sent my mum home with a big Tupperware box full and there’s the same left for us.
I was really impressed with the Morrisons turkey - lovely flavour, plenty of the good browner meat and stayed moist.

we also had the Morrisons turkey it was delicious

ours served 6 people over 2 days we gave some away and we will have the rest today with chips and salad

Howmanysleepsnow · 27/12/2023 13:29

Ours was 12-15 people, did 15 meals plus 12 sandwiches

Poblano · 27/12/2023 13:33

We had around 2.5kg of turkey breast joint plus a 1.3kg ham. I think the turkey was supposed to be enough to feed 12. We are a family of 5.

They made:
Christmas Day lunch (turkey)
Boxing day lunch (ham)
Boxing day sandwiches (turkey)
Sandwiches today (turkey and ham)
Turkey, Ham and Leek pie tonight
Warm Turkey and Stuffing baguettes with chips and coleslaw tomorrow.

The lunch sandwiches were supplemented with stuffing and pigs in blankets and we had lots of sides at dinner, so nobody had huge portions at any point. This makes it last longer.

ICANTSPEYK · 27/12/2023 13:37

Not sure what the serving size would be but we got a 5lb turkey breast (2.3kg I think?), did 6 on Xmas day and there's been enough for another 4 well filled sandwiches and plenty for the dog. So roughly 10 x 200g portions which seems about right to me.

Roussette · 27/12/2023 13:38

6 of us Christmas Day. Boneless 5.586kg crown. Lots of turkey sandwiches. Two DCs will take at least 1-2 kg back with them for curry/pie/stirfry.

Will freeze some and some gammon and make a pie with leeks next month. .

TheBucktoothedGirlFromLuxembourg · 27/12/2023 13:39

6kg boneless crown from the butcher.

It fed 5 adults for 2 roast dinners. I've carved off some slices for 3 days worth of sandwiches and I've made two pots of turkey broth with the little crumbly bits that come off the sides of the carved slices.

I've also frozen two big pieces that will each do a dinner for 5 and maybe some extra for sandwiches/soup.

So maybe 20 adult dinners and 20 lunches.

Gardeningtime · 27/12/2023 13:39

2.5kg stuffed crown, said it served 7-9, I think it could have done 7 at a push, but would have been slim slices and an inch of stuffing. Think it should have been 4-6 max.

tadpolelove · 27/12/2023 14:09

We had a frozen crown from asda. Said it serve 10-12. There was 7 adults and two children (6&9) there was loads used half Xmas day and the other half yesterday. And it wasn't dry like usual turkeys

caringcarer · 27/12/2023 14:53

I had a medium frozen crown this year Bernard Mathews. It feeds 6-8. I also cooked a joint of beef too. On Xmas day i carved one breast of the turkey and half of the beef. It was to feed 3 because DH is vegetarian. Loads of sliced meat left for Boxing day warmed through in hot gravy when I fed 5 with mashed potatoes, peas and carrots. Yesterday evening I carved up the second breast and other half of beef and wrapped it in foil and froze it because we're going to see my DS today and MiL for 28th and 29th. I won't be home until the 30th. I'll pull it out of the freezer in NY and make turkey curry and beef stew. I think the turkey would have fed 9-10 if no second meat.

LegoHeads · 27/12/2023 14:56

5.2kg turkey (said 10-12)
10 on Christmas Day (8 adults, 2 small children)
4 cold with salad
4 in a pie
4 sandwiches
Plus 3l stock, some of which is also in the pie and some will be soup or risotto.

haggisaggis · 27/12/2023 14:56

We had a 7kg free range Kelly Bronze whole bird. There’s only 4 of us but we like eating turkey leftovers! Haven’t yet finished the first breast and one leg over Christmas Day and Boxing Day sandwiches.

Luckylottowinnertobe · 27/12/2023 14:57

I just bought a small turkey crown, there were only 3 of us and l didn't want lots left. The cats had the remainder of it.

Fifiellz · 27/12/2023 22:07

Tesco Norfolk Bronze to serve 18.

Did 6 on Xmas Day

6 on Boxing Day along with leg of lamb

Cold meat, mash and peas boxing day night for 4 - turkey and lamb

Dog had a lovely breakfast this morning

Shangrilalala · 27/12/2023 22:22

Best Turkey ever here.

waitrose Dry Aged Kelly Bronze - whatever that means. 7kg supposedly feeds twelve.

we had four enormous adult servings on the 25th, four boxing bay cold portions, have just made Bang Bang Turkey for four and still have another huge bowl of decent turkey meat left and will make stock with the carcass too.

it was extremely expensive but delicious. I will do exactly the same next year.

baubl · 27/12/2023 22:28

I got a 2.8kg boneless crown for 7 people. We had it for the main meal, some cold slices for supper, and I made a Turkey chilli on Boxing Day.

Snackpocket · 27/12/2023 22:28

We had a medium crown from Sainsbury’s which said it fed 7-10 was about 2kg. It fed 5 meat eaters on Christmas Day with a few bits for the dogs and cats, then we had 2 rounds of turkey buttys.

3Tunes · 27/12/2023 22:39

2.4kg Tesco turkey crown, for 9-14. Did 7 people on the day and we had a bit over half left. It’s done another 4 meals and the rest will do a couple of turkey and leek pies with plenty of meat.

Parapapampam · 27/12/2023 22:40

Bought two turkey crowns, each said for 8-10 people, there were 15 of us and we only finished one, we ate the other in sandwiches and with left over Christmas veg on boxing day.

Daffyyellow · 27/12/2023 22:45

3.8kg Turkey crown, stuffed with sage & onion and sausage meat. Google says it should serve 10. 3 main meals, 5 yesterday and at least another 6 today. So about 14 portions plus little bits for hounds and cat! Now finished, quickest ever!

throughgrittedteeth · 27/12/2023 22:50

We had a turkey crown from Tesco, said it serves something like 11-13, we had 5 adults and 3 kids and there was enough left for the cat's tea x2, a couple of sandwiches and a big pie. We also had gammon and pigs in blankets.

DrunkenKoala · 27/12/2023 22:57

2.5kg crown from M&S served 6-8.
6 of us (adults) had it for dinner on Christmas Day and we used about half the crown for that - we did have quite a lot in sides though.
4 of us had some turkey on bread rolls today but the rolls also had ham in them so I wouldn’t say it was four full adult portions.
I’ve probably got enough turkey and ham left to make a pie for two of us (adults)

chosenone · 27/12/2023 22:57

We had 2.3kg crown from the butchers, always do after trying all sorts. Did 8 dinners but with ham and lots of pigs in blankets, lots of rounds of sandwiches and scraps for the dog and have enough to go in leftover pie tomorrow 👍. I recommend cooking using the tepee method so it steams in a foil tepee in stock and veg. I also massage a lot of salty butter with sage under the skin too. 🙌

TinselTittz · 27/12/2023 22:58

We had a large turkey breast (2.5kg) between 5 and it did Christmas Day, turkey sandwiches on Boxing Day 1/2 of leftovers to my mum to do whatever with and 1 sandwich tomorrow for me. We also had lots of sides likes yorkshires, roasties, veg etc. plus 3 of the 5 are elderly and only had like 1 slice!

BigBoysDontCry · 27/12/2023 23:03

I had a 5.8kg free range whole fresh turkey (Jimmy's farm via costco) meant to feed 8 - 10 I think.

We had loads for 4 on Christmas day, same again on boxing day. Made a huge curry for 4 tonight. DH has had some for sandwiches and adult DS put a pile of meat into some noodles he had for lunch.

The cat had a little bit and there was enough on the bones for soup.

It cost about £65 but the quality of meat means it's really dense and plenty on it.

We are big eaters (well I'm now average but DH and DSs are large men, all over 6'2)

I don't skimp.

Badtasteflump · 28/12/2023 10:05

6 kilo (labelled large) turkey, said it feeds 12-14 on the label. Five adults had two roast dinners from it with a small plate of picky leftovers. Last year with the same size turkey I had enough leftovers for a curry but not this year - not quite sure why. Either we had huge portions this year or 'large' turkeys are smaller than last year...
