Stocking or sack? Which is it??

Do you mean a stocking as per photo one, or a sack as per photo two when you talk about a stocking?

On here I read countless threads about what people put in a stocking and unless the stocking is huge then they can't possibly mean an actual stocking like in photo one and must mean a sack, or pillowcase as I had as a child.

My children have an actual stocking that is hung up on Christmas Eve, and a sack that is in the living room when they come down on Christmas morning.

I'm probably going to get lots of varying answers now but it's bugged me for years so I'm finally asking the question.

I'm English/British living in England if that perhaps influences my experiences.

Stockings come in all sizes.
The stocking I had as a child probably had a similar capacity to a pillowcase

prisscalledwanda · 17/12/2023 21:02

We use stockings that are huge! Capacity is about the same as a pillowcase and they are stretchy so actually prob more fits inside Xmas Blush

ShowOfHands · 17/12/2023 21:03

Like your first photo but I made them myself. Probably 16 inches long. You can fit a surprising amount in one.

NuffSaidSam · 17/12/2023 21:05

We used to have actual stockings, like tights! Satsuma in the the toe. Very stretchy so can fit quite a lot in. One big present from Santa was left under/next to the stocking (which would be stretched down to the floor with all the stuff!).

girljulian · 17/12/2023 21:07

Photo one.

SwedishEdith · 17/12/2023 21:11

We have both. Bad move by me early on as need to fill them both. Use pillow case on the bed as that's what I had. Then also bought decorative stockings for hanging and was asked why FC didn't put anything in them 🤔. Rod for my own back

NotToYou · 17/12/2023 21:11

Actual stockings. Big ones, they hold quite a lot

mrsmacmc · 17/12/2023 21:13

Stocking as in pic one with a sack for each person under the tree 🎄 (mine is a Christmas pillow case from when I was very very small!)

LaSpuddle · 17/12/2023 21:13

It’s a stocking as in the first picture but they’re big. And stretchy! Can fit a lot in them!

popandchoc · 17/12/2023 21:13

Actual stockings but don't get as many things as often listed here.

Fallenangelofthenorth · 17/12/2023 21:16

Good question! I (stupidly) bought stockings way way way too big when they were little which were a right pain in the arse to fill. As they got older, and all the things they liked got more expensive, the dog unfortunately chewed up the giant stockings so I replaced them with ones the same size as your first photo.

It was bad enough filling the big ones when they were little but once you can't really pad it out with felt tips, colouring books and cheap bath bombs, and they're more into luxury makeup, tech and fine jewellery it gets kinda expensive. And there's only so many chocolate oranges and toberlones you can pack it out with! If your kids are still young I'd recommend starting off with a small stocking in the first place...

Lovemusic82 · 17/12/2023 21:17

When I was a child we just had a sack, we didn’t do stockings. We put the sack by the fireplace before we went to bed Christmas ever and wake up to it full of presents, Father Christmas would put the tree presents in there too and then a big gift from him, we would also get a selection box and pj’s, sometimes a colouring book. I felt a bit sad that we didn’t have stockings.

My kids have stockings and the rest of the presents are under the tree. Stockings contain small gifts under £5 and sweets/choclate.

AutisticLegoLover · 17/12/2023 21:19

I've never seen a big stocking. They've all been like the photo in my OP. In ours you can get a satsuma, a tube of sweets, a small presents, the money wallets they get, and a beanie boo can be stuffed in the top.

A stocking. Always. Never a sack. Our stockings are made of felt and are maybe 50cm high, I think.

mrsm43s · 17/12/2023 21:36

We call them "stockings", but we actually use sacks. They're left by the fireplace and Father Christmas fills them up overnight (even though my children are now Uni age!)

Growing up, I had a pillowcase left at the end of my bed.

KeeefBurtain · 17/12/2023 21:46

I’ve always said Ive never had and don’t do stockings, but if your photo #2 is classed as a stocking too then we always have! Everything goes inside except bigger (sized not cost) gifts that are piled next to it.

in our house growing up, Santa just delivered the presents that parents/family bought, and left a selection box by his empty plate to say thanks for the milk and mince pie! No presents from him other than that.

DramaAlpaca · 17/12/2023 21:49

We've always used pillowcases, same as when I was a child.

Pascha · 17/12/2023 21:58

Mine have photo one. As a child dh had photo two but I actually had a hockey sock rammed full of small inconsequential stuff and bulging on my bed as a child, then a pile of wrapped normal presents in the corner of the living room.

ColleenDonaghy · 17/12/2023 22:05

Sack here, it was the same in my family growing up. Ours are little so this year it'll have books, selection box, toothbrushes, pants, socks, little toys, bits from Claire's. ETA I'm Irish, so the traditions may be a bit different.

notacooldad · 17/12/2023 22:08

As a child I had this set up. I repeated it with my children.

Spaghettieis · 17/12/2023 22:11

Stocking like in photo one. But only small things go in it (like socks, bath bomb, chocolate coins etc) and bigger presents just go under the tree.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 17/12/2023 22:12

Stockings. Dd's is reeeaaally long and ds' is shorter but wider. I can't tell how big the stocking in your first photo is though - there's nothing to compare it with!

ChristmasCwtch · 17/12/2023 22:21

The stockings I bought online are big!! I buy a hoodie to fill the toe 😂

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 17/12/2023 22:23

Oh ours are not as big as that! Father Christmas only brings little bits and bobs though. All the main presents are under the tree and are from whoever bought them.
