Stocking or sack? Which is it??

Do you mean a stocking as per photo one, or a sack as per photo two when you talk about a stocking?

On here I read countless threads about what people put in a stocking and unless the stocking is huge then they can't possibly mean an actual stocking like in photo one and must mean a sack, or pillowcase as I had as a child.

My children have an actual stocking that is hung up on Christmas Eve, and a sack that is in the living room when they come down on Christmas morning.

I'm probably going to get lots of varying answers now but it's bugged me for years so I'm finally asking the question.

We have stockings a similar size to your first photo, and all other presents under the tree

OhNaffOffYouWazzock · 17/12/2023 22:27

As a child I had a pillowcase either on my bed or downstairs depending on where we were for Christmas.
DH had a sack left in the living room.
My DC had a stocking in their rooms and a sack downstairs. Though we have no believers now so will probably just put everything under the tree.

SusanKennedyshouldLTB · 17/12/2023 22:30

We have stockings in bedrooms and sacks in the living room. They open the stockings together before coming downstairs and then get us to open presents in sacks.

Blessedbethefruitz · 17/12/2023 22:32

Stocking as in pic 1. But I made them, based on standard sizes. Can fit about 8 small things (in my dreams, I've given up and colour coordinated paper per child so the ones that 'fell out' are identifiable) like beanie boo or bubbles (for size comparisons), plus chocolate coin net. Santa leaves 1 tree gift and everything els else is from who it's from.

I've set myself up to fail this year with a 60cm anna rag doll and a similar sized plush mario star, on the basis that stockings need a stuffy poking out the top...

The DC (although they're 27 and 16 now!) have stockings like photo one, which I made myself. They're not stretchy and frankly it's a PITA trying to find stocking fillers small enough! It was a lot easier when they were young. I did suggest, just today, that they might get a gift bag instead of a stocking (as well as the presents under the tree, obvs) but that went down like a lead balloon.😂

As children, my siblings and I each had one of Mum's stockings, which would be laid across the end of the bed. The excitement of waking up and seeing the knobbly snake across the foot of the bed remains unparallelled 😁

Stockings like the first one - anything from FC that doesn’t fit gets put next to it. Main presents are under the tree.

SpringingJoy · 17/12/2023 22:39

Here, FC leaves a stocking on the bed with cheaper/fun/small sweets and gifts and a sack in the living room with the main presents.

Our stockings are fairly large though and seem bigger than the one pictured. Even so, they don't take that much filling tbh. By the time you get a selection box, a football and a lynx set in, it seems half full!

The presents that FC leaves - in both the stocking and sacks - are unwrapped. Controversial I know 😂

Tree presents are there, under the tree, in advance and are from family. They get opened a bit later in the day once the santa madness dies down.

Huge stockings in our house. Growing up, it would have been my dad's massive socks, and we all fought over them trying to get the biggest sock 😆

Footprintsinthesand · 17/12/2023 22:43

Ours are knitted and are roughly the same size as a football sock. They don't fit much in (a book would stand no chance!). They go in their bedrooms.

We also have sacks by the fireplace. They don't leave those out though. They magically appear overnight.

lobsterchallet · 17/12/2023 22:44

These sort are the best because you can fill out as much or as little as needed.

PianPianPiano · 17/12/2023 22:55

Growing up we used our football/hockey socks! They were very stretchy, but we didn't get big toys in them, just "stocking filler" type things.

We used to have a stocking for my ds when he was little, but moved to a sack as he got older as we struggled to fit things in the stocking.

AutisticLegoLover · 18/12/2023 07:16

This thread is making me feel all festive now and excited for Christmas morning. The weight of the pillowcase on my feet on Christmas morning and the crinkle of paper was the greatest feeling. The sacks are too big and heavy for me to risk putting on their beds so they are left downstairs next to the tree. I do a stocking and a sack for my mum and she gets the most presents out of anyone! She's 84 and deserves all the lovely things🥰

Our stocking is a small sack, a bit smaller than a pillowcase.

Wanttobeok · 18/12/2023 07:46

Stocking like pic 1 but its huge. My mum made it for DS first Christmas. He could fit in it until he was about 3 😁

Unfortunately that means we have to buy a few big things to bulk it out every year. It gets harder as he gets older!

psuedocream3 · 18/12/2023 08:20

Ours is standard stockings in picture one like you see in Christmas films. They asren't wrapped and they get put on their door handles.

It's lovely that everyone has different traditions, I've always wondered where the idea of a sack instead of a stocking came from, it's very common it seems.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 18/12/2023 08:45

Dds used to have stockings (big stretchy ones made by me out of an old red jersey dress) or pillowcases.
Non-Santa presents were under the tree, not in anything.

housethatbuiltme · 18/12/2023 08:46

I grew up with neither and now do BOTH.

Our stocking is half sweets, half small novelties... not 'from' anyone, just a tradition on honor of the saint Nicholas. Items are not wrapped and they are hung on the door handles downstairs.

The sack is from Santa, it contains cheap classic toys only and something noisy that they wouldn't be allowed. They are also not wrapped and on their chairs downstairs.

Bbq1 · 18/12/2023 08:54

We have both stocking and sack. The stock is big ans stretchy but I fill with 10/12 smaller items. The sack, i fill with bigger/bulkier items. Any main presents from us are seperate. I've been doing this for a 18 years for my ds but I love it!

AutumnBride · 18/12/2023 10:06

I do a stocking like the one pictured for small bit and bobs, chocolate etc. And a sack that I put all the rest of the presents in, so two completely different things.

welshweasel · 18/12/2023 12:42

Stocking like picture 1. Anything that doesn't fit just sits beside it. FC brings relatively low value gifts, chocolate, toiletries, books, card games etc, many of which can fit in a normal stocking.

Everything else comes from us/familiy/friends and is wrapped and labelled and put under the tree.

iPreferBooks · 18/12/2023 14:34

I never had a stocking as a child. Like the user above we had pillowcases 😊
