This thread title made me think I should make up a 12 days of christmas song for all the main bargains we've got! Thanks@Yalz and @ApiratesaysYarrr for the inspo on the title.

In message two are the links and info from last year - if anyone has anything they'd like me to amend or add, please do tag me and I'll update.

@Woolabaloo my Chuckling Cheese confirmation email went into my junk mail so maybe check there - it says the expected delivery date on it

sorryiasked · 18/12/2023 18:38

Haven't checked on delivery times but bigjigs have a good sale on. They do all sorts of this - wooden railway stuff, wooden building blocks, phonics and other educational vans etc, and 8" lottie dolls currently £14.99

My not-so-DSIL has given me a last min request for DN as she doesn’t think Santa should be bringing this so she’ll delegated it to me (🙄). Anyone got recommendations for a book on WW2 for a 9 year old? They started talking about at school last term and she’s interested to read more. Not sure what is age appropriate or if I should look for a more general history book also. Any ideas/recommendations would be welcome.

If she's a strong reader, The Diary of Anne Frank is perfect. Mine read it at 9, and understood it better than I thought they would.

Justhereforthechristmasthreads · 18/12/2023 18:58

@BackToTheChaos if you want fiction Carrie's War

If you want something more factual then maybe this from Amazon. Says 8-12 on recommended age

I bought Tom Palmer's books about WW2 evacuees for DD last year (brilliant childrens writer). If you look on his Twitter page, he usually has a link to a bookshop that will send signed copies (Lake District based) I ordered around this time last year and also got personalised Christmas sent with the books.

Link to bookshop I mentioned with signed copies of books.

Have you looked on Vinted? I've just bought myself a pair of designer trainers for Xmas from there

@Beckafett

I did look on Vinted. The new ones are on for higher than I can get from an actual shop. 🙈

DingDongBella · 18/12/2023 19:10

@BackToTheChaos another option is Why Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit by Judith Kerr.

Dee1224 · 18/12/2023 19:13

@BackToTheChaos - I agree with @DingDongBella re: Judith Kerr’s book - it’s excellent.

@BackToTheChaos

I use BooksforTopics website and The Reader Teacher for book recommendations for primary school age. Some great ones on their pages- classics and new discoveries

I suppose this might be more of a post-Christmas bargain request, but our tree lights are quickly failing, so will need new ones next year. Are there any places in particular to keep an eye out for good bargains on lights post-Christmas?

I’m just catching up so can’t see if anyone else has replied yet but I got some for half price in Tesco today.

Last minute request! I remember reading about the sol de janeiro perfumes ages ago. My daughter has said she loves these! Any idea where the cheapest place to get them is ? Thanks 😂

I think the consensus was Notino was the cheapest.

Carrie’s War is a lovely book, it isn’t about the war as such but about two children who are evacuated whilst the war is going on so it talks about it a little bit but not in a way that’s too much for children. I actually read it age ten when studying ww2 at school. A non fiction book about fashion in the era or rationing might be a good idea too.

BackToTheChaos · 18/12/2023 19:30

Oh wow thank you all so much for your prompt replies and brilliant ideas. I’ll look into them all! Hadn’t considered things like Anne Frank’s Diary or Carries War I’ll look at those maybe behind a more factual book as she’s very keen on chapter book reading so might like the non fact books. I haven’t heard of the Pink Rabbit one I’ll do some Google thanks. It’s hard to judge the age appropriateness esp when not my DC.

Elpheba · 18/12/2023 19:48

@BackToTheChaos I saw a comic/graphic novel version of Anne Frank in Amsterdam and it was on Amazon. I’m going to get it for my 8 year old next year.

MamaClausToTheRescue · 18/12/2023 19:50

My NIO cocktails arrived at lunchtime today - only 24 hours after a Sunday order, which seems pretty impressive. Just sharing here so people can see the packaging - easy to split up into separate gifts / stocking fillers.

You’ll find a referral code over on the referrals board to get £10 off, but bear in mind that tomorrow night is the cut off for guaranteed Christmas delivery.

i also saw a recommendation above for Boxtails. I haven’t tried them but this is whetting my appetite for cocktail gifts - wish someone would buy me some 😬

Goodnight Mr Tom is a lovely book set in wartime, about evacuees.

Lots of oversized hoodies half price on dunelm. I've picked up a couple for my 2 girls but feel like they've got so much this year I might put them towards next year. Also feel like that's a bit too organised!

Nina Bawden's "Carrie's War" is a lovely book - I read that at 9 and has stayed with me ever since! My god-daughter enjoyed "Goodnight Mr Tom" at the same age but there is some slightly older child content in this.

My DD loved these and reread them many times. I'd second these as an option
