Best scented candles

Can anyone recommend a good scented candle? DD's friend is a fan and DD wants to gift her one for her upcoming birthday. Budget is up to £30, ideally a bit less.

We can't have them in our house as DH gets migraines from strong smells, so I have absolute no idea.

I can't think of the name but home bargains own brand do a yankee candle jar type. The gingerbread one is amazing.

Topbird29 · 29/09/2023 21:52

I don't really like overly scented candles (I know they are supposed to smell!), but do love white company candle called "winter". Is not too over powering. Usualltbabout £20 for the smaller one, which still lasts really well!

Noodleys · 29/09/2023 21:57

My favourite candle of all time is White Company white tea and peppermint. Sounds weird but it is gorgeous!

I also buy a lot of the Aldi candles mentioned upthread.

sleepD3pr1ived · 29/09/2023 22:00

Lily-flame are nice, and not chemically. They're usually £10.

The best candle in the UK is ones by Lauren Dickinson (I know because I've tried all of them Grin)

She can almost afford a mini one at £36

Snowpatrolling · 29/09/2023 22:08

I love Yankee candles and also the imperial candles are nice and they have jewellery in them!

reluctantbrit · 30/09/2023 08:33

Thanks all.

The girl has imperial candles, they are really nice as DH is able to cope with the residue smell. We light ours when he is not at home but obviously there is a whiff in the house.

I personally hate Yankee, far too overpowering but I think it depends what you are looking for.

I will check White Company as we have a shop locally and I had a look at St. Eval.

I would really recommend a small brand called Ohros. Amazing scent throw. They’re what I buy myself as a treat.

BuffaloCauliflower · 30/09/2023 08:36

I don’t think Yankee candles have much scent throw at all for what it’s worth

SoIinvictus · 30/09/2023 08:40

Be careful with St Eval.
Despite being lovely smelling, and fairly cheap, the ones we had resulted in me rushing off to the GP with DD as black snot was pouring from her nose. Never dreamed it was from simply sitting in a very large living room with one candle burning. The GP confirmed it was soot that she'd inhaled.

I wrote to St Eval and they couldn't have been less interested.

They do smell lovely, but I wouldn't burn them if there are children around (dp and I were fine)

DrLucyVanPelt · 30/09/2023 08:44

Second Valentte, just ordered from them and very impressed

algasport · 30/09/2023 08:47

Third Valentte!
All their products are absolutely fantastic and much much cheaper than others.

Elevant · 30/09/2023 08:52

I love Woodwick - the ellipse ones with a wide wick are beautiful. I've got Vanilla Bean at the moment which is really nice.

I have to say, when I redecorated last year I was quite horrified at how sooty my walls were! When I took pictures off the wall there were marks around where they'd been... it made me a bit nervous about inhaling all this stuff. For a while I switched to those battery operated fake candles + an electric wax melt warmer... but you just can't beat a real candle.

The soot issue was before I tried the Woodwick ones, just to add! I think all candles create the same problem.

I absolutely love these candles, they burn really well and smell gorgeous, the Midsummer is my favourite. My OH has asthma and most scented candle seem to aggravate it but he's completely fine with Druid. They come nicely packaged and you can get a wee handwritten gift card too.

@Ifyouwantmyopinion

I was just about to post Druid Edinburgh!

They're lovely. My favourite is Saddle but I also love Woodlands and Cathedral.

Have you been to the shop?

This is a load of bollocks and impossible.
If it was made in the UK it would have been soot tested by a lab.

I can assure you it isn't bollocks. When we removed the candle we saw it had a huge pile of soot around it.
St Eval themselves said that can sometimes happen, and if I paid to send the candle back, they'd refund me. As I'm not in the UK it would have cost more than I'd originally paid, so fuck off with your bollocks.

DH bought me the Christmas one last year, it’s the only ‘Christmas ‘ scent which isn’t too sweet or over cinnamon I ever smelt.

If you knew anything about candle making you would know that it is bollocks.
Any candle can soot a little bit if it's left to burn for too long or burned in a draught which would be your fault for not following the instructions , but not to the extent that you describe,

notapizzaeater · 30/09/2023 13:41

Why can't you have candles if you've cats ?

My favourite is Molten Brown Rhubarb and Rose or any Christmas ones 🎅🎅🎅🎅

NewDogOwner · 30/09/2023 13:57

If you could push it to £40, the Neom Christmas candle is incredible. The scent is also available in an oil that you can use in a diffuser for £20.

We don't have them on a purely safety aspect , our female like to test the Gravity Theory and has so far thrown two fruitbowls off the table ( smashed to smithereens ) and several things in my DS room ( remote controls , XBox controlllers)

She;s a walking menace Xmas Grin

PulaMea · 30/09/2023 21:13

Our walls are black from a Yankee candle from a couple of years ago.

Abfab63 · 30/09/2023 21:15
