Best scented candles

Can anyone recommend a good scented candle? DD's friend is a fan and DD wants to gift her one for her upcoming birthday. Budget is up to £30, ideally a bit less.

We can't have them in our house as DH gets migraines from strong smells, so I have absolute no idea.

I had terrible black soot from a Jo Malone candle so it does happen. Hideous black snot and walls which needed washing with sugar soap. They too couldn’t have been less interested. Fwiw, I think the issue was probably a wick that was far too long, I always make sure to trim all our candle wicks now, every single time before they’re lit and haven’t had a problem since.

If you read the label it has safety instructions on it. It tells you to keep your wick trimmed to between 3 and 5mm.
The majority of problems that people have when burning candles are their own fault because they don't read and follow the instructions.
Keep the wick trimmed, do not burn in a draught, do not place near doors, walls and windows, do not burn for more than 4 hours at a time, keep the melt pool clear of debris.
Candle makers are not to blame for stupid customers who don't read and follow instructions.
Even the best made candles will not perform well if they aren't burned properly

Our walls are black from a Yankee candle from a couple of years ago.

Yankee candles are now mostly made in China from cheap ingredients. They were bought out some time ago and are no longer worth buying

If you could push it to £40, the Neom Christmas candle is incredible. The scent is also available in an oil that you can use in a diffuser for £20.

I was lucky to snatch a boxed version of this off ebay for £15, so worth a look there OP. Obviously you take a risk, but photos and seller will often state whether box is immaculate or if it has any marks.

I've now sussed the essential oil ratios for the Christmas wish candle and the Complete bliss one and am making my own.

Thanks again.

One other thing: Would you say wax melts are nicer than candles?

Decades ago (early nineties) I had these small burners where you added 2-3 drops of essential oils to water.
DH definitely was able to deal with those better. I just realised I still have the burner and wonder if I should try out the wax melts.

Diptyque candles are the Rolls Royce of candles, I think. The smaller 70g votive is about £28 I think and last well. I love the fig one and the jasmine one.

Seychelles by the white company is a big favourite of mine too, I think it is their best selling. You can get a good size one for £20.

wax lyrical scented candles in a tin in Waitrose are also gorgeous, I think they’re about £12.

Tk Maxx often have lovely candles reduced. Definitely worth a look.

Yes, in the TK Maxx near me you are overwhelmed by candle choice. Reasonably priced too.

I love St.Eval. vintage rose or orange and cinnamon are my favourites. Made in Cornwall. The tin says burn time 45hours and they are only £14. Make my house smell lovely

This is an American company? We have much stricter regulations in the UK with regards the the chemicals allowed in scented candles. A lot used over there are banned here. In America, they don't even have to have a clp label listing the allergens. They do have to in the UK.

Too late for your daughter's purpose, but Plum and Ashby make a lovely neroli and bergamot votive - quite a summery scent.
I think I will add a candle snuffer to my own Christmas stocking...
