Any suggestions as to gift we can take for hostess of drinks do on Monday??
We are new to the village and this is a smart neighbour we don’t know.

For a drinks party I'd probably take a bottle of wine/champagne, perhaps a nice box of chocolates/biscuits/cheese or something edible to go with it. Definitely something consumable!

notmumlisa · 31/12/2022 15:16

If I know the hosts well, I take campaigns, otherwise I take Rose wine as you can't go wrong with this one. If they like red or white, they can still enjoy Rose.

Thanks!

I think I'd stick with champagne OP. Particularly so close to New Year etc.

getoutof · 31/12/2022 21:55

Champagne or a nice white. Steer clear of rose wine as it brings out snobbery.

Murasakispillowbook · 31/12/2022 21:57

I love red & white but Rosé is grim!

Don't take ROSE!
🤣

You can absolutely go wrong with Rose wine. Eurgh. Worst gift to take to a drinks party - to me it screams "this bottle someone gave us that we'll never drink so here you go, we're passing it on to you."

Take bubbles of some sort - a nice prosecco or a champagne or the like.

notmumlisa · 31/12/2022 22:06

I am beginning to wonder if there is something missing here.. I've been specifically thought by English people to take Rose to parties that you dont know what people like and I heard it many times, it's the best decision.. And today, it's like OMG no Rose! What all of a sudden ideas changed?

notmumlisa · 31/12/2022 22:08

Unless if you guys talking about NYE party drinks? I was not.

getoutof · 31/12/2022 22:10

People speak like rose is a happy medium between white and red. It's nothing of the sort and isn't the best to be honest. Real wine drinkers don't drink rose. (I do sometimes but I'm not a real wine drinker)

ChampagneLassie · 31/12/2022 22:27

I'd take a bottle to be drunk and flowers as a gift. Take the sort of booze you drink.

ChampagneLassie · 31/12/2022 22:28

I don't think many people like rose it is a bit niche and if you do like it, I think you've got to spend more to get sometime nice than a white or red so I definitely wouldn't buy as a, gift unless I knew person liked it and which roses they liked

Lachimolala · 31/12/2022 22:46

I love rosè 😅

I would take a nice bottle of cava, champagne or red to people I didn’t know very well I think.

I always go for a nice Malbec.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 31/12/2022 22:56

I quite like Rosè.

But I would never give it as a gift!

There are too many hidden wine snobs around. A bottle of champagne always goes down well.

@notmumlisa the on,y time I might take/give Rosé is if I knew the person well enough to joke ‘I didn’t know if you preferred red or white, so I went with pink’. And realistically, that would only be with people I already knew who changed their wine preference periodically. (DSD, I am thinking of you!)

viques · 31/12/2022 22:59

I think there is nothing wrong with rose and nibbly stuff on a hot summers day. But with a meal or at any other time of the year it’s a no from me.

Verbena17 · 31/12/2022 23:26

Prettily tied box of chocs and a nice bottle of wine or maybe a flavoured gin in a pretty bottle.

YouTarzan · 01/01/2023 00:25

Rosé would be fine if it were the height of summer.

Catterpillarwithconverse · 01/01/2023 00:26

A plant

mrpenny · 01/01/2023 02:44

Thanks all. Will take fizz. Hostess is well known food critic so rather nervous.

I’d take a bottle of whatever I had leftover from Christmas.

This is what I would do as well. Nice flowers and a decent bottle. Can;t go wrong IMO.

Can’t go right with Rose imo, as people who like white or red both hate it.

Not among my network... Rose is the most drinks on the table in many parties I've been to.

Complete opposite in my friendship groups I can only think of one rose drinker.

A bottle of fizz is a good shout.

Oo sounds really interesting OP!

On the rose subject - definitely not something most would take. Rose is really something for lunch in the garden at the height of summer.
