And I want to cry. We have three child-free days this year and she's been here for two of them. She's lovely and an easy house guest but please go away now so DH and I can have some time on our own!

I will of course host her nicely.

But really, this all depends on the relationships, doesn't it. Maybe you or DH can be blunt and say you'd expected her to have left this morning, so had planned a quiet day together / doing your own thing.

Or maybe you can ask what she's making, as you hadn't planned anything.

Or, if DH feels obliged to dance to his mother's tune, he's going to be making lunch and entertaining her isn't he.

Apologies, OP.

I'd guessed Grin

I've decided to make a very quick lunch now and then to put my outdoor clothes on and say I'll help her with her bags. I explained the situation to DH while she was upstairs for a minute so he's on board.

Here you go MIL, Ham and tomato butty...I'll take your bags to the car. Halo

DiddyHeck · 26/12/2022 12:40

Why is your DH leaving it all up to you?

fancyacuppatea · 26/12/2022 12:41

@PolkaDotMankini
I'm guessing you and DH fancy a shag this afternoon.

Ivyy · 26/12/2022 12:51

Deckthehallswithbenandhollly · 26/12/2022 12:13

@DiddyHeck

But how can there only have three child free days a year if the kids have a dad they visit?

It's perplexing

Also tell MIL you're ill OP

Op probably means this year as in this Christmas, not the whole year

custardbear · 26/12/2022 12:58

12.01 you should have served a quick lunch and packed her stuff in the car lol 😆
Good luck and enjoy your afternoon

PolkaDotMankini · 26/12/2022 12:59

No, this year as in the entire year. ExH doesn't ever have them overnight.

DH is on board.

I was wondering what the earliest decent time to do that would be 😂

About an hour ago tbh. Xmas Grin

PolkaDotMankini · 26/12/2022 13:10

There is movement! She has put on her scarf!

Bacon is in the grill and bread has been prepared for bacon sandwiches.

Can you get your hubby to have a quiet word with her? It's only reasonable you want your own space at this stage x

LlynTegid · 26/12/2022 13:23

Next year agree well in advance. I would be upset in your shoes.

No, this year as in the entire year. ExH doesn't ever have them overnight.

DH is on board.

So you do have more child-free days, just no overnights.

Also bacon butties?! That's not an invitation to f off 😂

PolkaDotMankini · 26/12/2022 13:44

FFS! She's settled back down to finish the jigsaw. Excuse me while I assemble a 1000-piece jigsaw at the speed of light.

OP posts:
LostFrog · 26/12/2022 13:50

Your mistake was starting the jigsaw. No way could I leave a house with a half finished jigsaw in it.

PolkaDotMankini · 26/12/2022 13:55

We started the jigsaw yesterday 😭

OP posts:
GrumpyPanda · 26/12/2022 13:59

Ffs. Either tell her you've got plans, or start pointedly nibbling each other's ears. See how far you can push it before she gets it.

JackieDaws · 26/12/2022 11:59

What's it got to do with you?

I read it as the children belonged to both of them! I would have loved to have my kids spend Boxing Day at Granny’s house when they were little 🤣🤣

Soontobe60 · 26/12/2022 14:07

Mariposa26 · 26/12/2022 12:03

Why is this anything to do with you?

Why has the OPs post got anything to do with anyone - including you - on MN?

Soontobe60 · 26/12/2022 14:09

PolkaDotMankini · 26/12/2022 12:13

MIL knows very well that I'm not ill.

OP: sorry MIL, feeling ropey. I’m off to bed.
MIL: no you’re fine, what’s for lunch
🤣

Accidentally knock it off the table.

PolkaDotMankini · 26/12/2022 14:13

DH is seeing her to the car 🥳🥳🥳🥳 If she's forgotten anything then tough, we'll post it. I am not opening the door again until the DC get home. Thankyou for helping me through it MNers!
