Got everything except sprouts and a turkey!

The sprouts in Tesco were dated today and the smallest turkey was huge. Went to Sainsbury’s and couldn’t park so I will try Morrison’s later. Plan b is turkey slices from a packet even though teenage dc has already requested chicken instead of turkey anyway. Fortunately only cooking for me and the dc this year!

How’s your food shopping going and have you managed to get everything?

Eh? I don’t want curly sprouts (I love sprouts) and I can have chicken any day of the week. I want a proper turkey dinner!

I thought I had everything but turns out I've forgotten the red cabbage. Shame cause I really like it but I'm not venturing to our nearest town to get it - we'll go without. Also no bread sauce but no one eats it except DFIL so we're doing without that too!

strawberrysunrise · 23/12/2022 15:14

OH is picking up our joint of beef this evening from M&S.

Kids will be having chicken.

I braved Sainsbury's earlier and initially was concerned as the veg isles looked a bit sparse, but they did seem to be restocking fairly regularly.

Managed to get all the veg/trifle/snack food/booze etc without too much bother. It was busy in there but not the clusterfuck I have seen it some years!

Got everything I needed to yesterday from Sainsburys (which was rammed!), but did forget ice. So will get that tomorrow when I’n picking up my pre ordered Turkey (again from Sainsburys)

Tinsella · 23/12/2022 15:19

I had a right bloody escapade trying to find a Christmas ham this morning.

I was one of those mad people who got to M&S by 6am when it opened. It was packed by 6.10am and although there were plenty of turkeys, they didn’t have any ham at all. I didn’t ask why, just pegged it to Sainsburys for 7am opening. No ham there either. In fact, it was woefully stocked, which has been a bit of a theme for weeks (Brexit?). Bread and meat and fruit aisles very sparse.

Aldi had a nasty queue of cars waiting to get into the car park, so went to Waitrose, which was beautifully stocked and not too busy at 8am. And got my ham!

It better be appreciated! 🎄

Well done to everyone who was organised and congratulations to those who aren't suffering with bizarre substitutions or unavailable items!

We don't do a roast dinner. DM will on boxing day.

Send me good vibes for my midnight shop. 2 key meals being purchased, along with other bits:

  • lamb with rose harissa, rice and tabbouleh (Xmas day).
  • steak and chips with peppercorn sauce (Xmas eve).

Sitting outside our large Sainsbury’s waiting for my taxi and there was plenty of fresh veg, loads of turkeys all sizes and not massively busy - no queues at fast tills at all hardly different to a normal Saturday...

Garages are often a good place for ice if you don't need anything else!

My DH ordered a Turkey breast from the butchers and has collected it. As we are trying to feed 8 full sized adults and not Borrowers I have sent him and his 1.5kg of Turkey breast back out into the cold to see what else he can find!

Also my trifle is in the bin because it turned into a sloppy disaster.

I am trying to remain calm 😕

I love seeing the queue of men outside the butchers on Christmas Eve looking very uncomfortable!
The supermarkets seem to have lots of turkey, whole or parts, at the moment.

PorridgewithQuark · 23/12/2022 15:50

I have everything, but the turkey is frozen - I got it a couple of weeks ago because where I live most people have goose and you can't always find a turkey easily. We've had duck or goose in the past but actually prefer turkey.

There's a long line just to get in to the parking lot! SW London Waitrose.

Car park surely, as it's London not USA?

ButterflyBiscuit · 23/12/2022 15:55

WHERE ARE THE TWIGLETS?!!??!

FlamingJingleBells · 23/12/2022 15:59

Loads of turkeys at my local M&S.

Crimsonripple · 23/12/2022 15:59

Try M&S - lots on offer within the dates.

Crimsonripple · 23/12/2022 16:01

ButterflyBiscuit · 23/12/2022 15:55

WHERE ARE THE TWIGLETS?!!??!

They've changed the recipe!!! They're not as twigletty tasting 😩

ButterflyBiscuit · 23/12/2022 16:10

We've tried lots of local shops and can't find twiglets anywhere. 😔

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 23/12/2022 16:11

I’m trying to hold on until late tomorrow afternoon to see if M&S reduce their turkeys.

But now I’m cracking and thinking of going at 9pm tonight.

Why did you not order in advance?

1 There isn't enough slots for everyone to order in advance.
2 People sometimes just like to go the shop and get their shopping.
3 Ordering in advance does not mean you actually get it, plenty off posts on here today about that!

BarbaraofSeville · 23/12/2022 16:29

Ordering in advance seems to be a waste of time and incredibly risky unless you have a back up plan. So many people missing key ingredients so end up having to go to the shops anyway, by which time it will be heaving, or things sold out.

I don't know why anyone bothers unless they are housebound, don't drive or are a single parent of small children. And even for those who 'need' online shopping, I don't think I'd be leaving it until now, I'd be getting the main bits in advance and freezing. Or accepting that Christmas Dinner may or may not include X, Y or Z.

I can't believe you'd pull someone up on the words they choose. Last time I checked it's a democracy and isn't against the law to say parking lot - how do you know the poster isn't from US?

CarPoor · 23/12/2022 16:39

Do a chicken if you can't find a turkey! Slices of turkey isn't the same as a proper Christmas roast and you'll still have all the trimmings which make it christmassy

Sprouts would have been fine, peel off the outer layer, they will taste the same

daisychain01 · 23/12/2022 16:41

We went food shopping yesterday, fully prepared with our hard-hats and body armour .... all very orderly, everyone was in the .Christmas/festive spirit, especially when the assistant loading new supplies of veg onto the display said that all the veg on that side were 19p per pack. Cue DH getting a few bags of sprouts, potatoes and carrots - plenty to go around! The potatoes were unbelievable, large whites, good for mashing, roasting, baking, 2.5kg bag 19p.

no gaps on shelves, people waiting their turn and nobody being bad tempered.

this was a big out of town Tesco Extra - DH would prefer a click and collect, but based on MN "weird substitutions", I don't fancy Turkey Twizzlers and Pom Bears for lunch.

BCBird · 23/12/2022 16:45

Why not get some turkey steaks? I have these most weeks. Quick to cook.

Haveahappyholiday · 23/12/2022 16:45

Just back from Morrison’s and they had a stuffed turkey joint exactly the size I wanted. Also got a bag of sprouts!
