Help, what the hell going on with Argos

Hi, ordered son a phone on 15 December (realise a bit late for xmas shopping, but I was a bit cash strapped earlier) via one of those click and collect options on their website, where it said it would be available yesterday at 9.00 am. Still no sign today, a day later, my account just tells me to 'sit tight, it will be ready for collection between 20 and 26 December'! 😡 Really no idea what to do now, should I just go in and cancel, get refunded on my card and try to buy a phone locally, bet stock everywhere is really low too. Or do I hold on for a couple of days? I'm in Northern Ireland, anyone else being shagged about like this.

I'd wait for the Argos one rather than join a new queue at the end.

If it doesn't arrive by 25th, give your son a handmade phone voucher - if he's old enough for a mobile phone, he's old enough to wait until you collect it on Boxing day or soon after.

Mamette · 21/12/2022 14:25

Wow that’s crap. I thought the order-in service in Argos was pay when you collect.

Well, the money's gone from my account! Went through as a VISA debit payment when I ordered online.

With Argos click and collect you pay when you place the order now so I'd expect your account to be debited within a day or so of placing the order. I think there used to be an option to pay on collection but I don't think it's there now and I've ordered a number of things from them in the last month. Have you contacted them to find out what's happening with your order? I find their customer service is generally pretty good. It would be unfortunate if the phone doesn't turn up on time but there are so many supply issues this year I would stick with it and give your son a homemade voucher on the day. If he's old enough for a mobile he should be old enough to understand.

WonderingWanda · 21/12/2022 15:51

I'd imagine delivery issues. Is the phone in stock anywhere you can physically go and collect?

FourChimneys · 21/12/2022 16:00

I agree with a PP, if he's old enough for a phone he's old enough to wait. Just make sure you have some activities planned so that he won't miss playing with it on the day.

One of my DDs main presents didn't arrive until after New Year many years ago. She survived.

dementedpixie · 21/12/2022 16:09

I paid for an Argos click and collect the other day but it said that it was for delivery to the store today.

I hate it when they over promise and under deliver though

hellycat · 21/12/2022 16:09

This is my son's main present though...

I have never had issues with Argos before, generally find them really reliable.

Their online CS is crap, basically just saying 'I can't guarantee.' And blaming the delivery drivers.

Just having a jouk through Twitter and some other people are having problems with these delivery dates not being honoured, some poor blighter has no oven for Christmas Day.

FourChimneys · 21/12/2022 16:17

I would tell him in advance, that way he won't be disappointed.

Perhaps you and any siblings could save some presents to open later with him when the phone arrives and switch the focus on 25th December to activities and games.

hellycat · 21/12/2022 16:18

I'm going to walk down to Argos this evening via Currys and Tesco on the way down, check if they have the same phone or similar for sale, go to Argos and ask them to double check, if I've established that other stores have stock I'll just ask for a refund on my card.
Christ!

I’m in NI too, and this happened to me last year with my daughters bike. BUT, it was 3 days late and I was contemplating giving up and cancelling the order when it said to collect so I went and got it and then the money went back into my account the next day as it was flagged as not available. I called them to tell them and they were insistent they had taken payment 🤷🏻‍♀️ so I had a free bike essentially. This was at forestside Argos!

WishIhadacrystalball · 21/12/2022 16:21

Hi @hellycat i don’t want to be negative but I’m sure Argos take like 3-5 days to refund the cash, I had an issue once with a bed that I had ordered and was dally annoyed as I needed the cash to then order a new one. Just so you can check that out if you decide to cancel, good luck hope you get it sorted.

WishIhadacrystalball · 21/12/2022 16:26

Refunds will be processed by the original payment method. If you paid by card, it can take up to 5 working days to appear back in your account; with PayPal, refunds can take up to 30 days.

If you return your item(s) back to an Argos store, we can trigger a refund immediately. It may take up to 5 working days for your bank to process it into your account. If you paid by cash or gift card you’ll be refunded in store using the original payment method. PayPal refunds can take up to 30 days.

Although a cancellation and not a return I’m sure it’s the same process 🥴

hellycat · 21/12/2022 16:27

Thank you @WishIhadacrystalball I got paid last week so shouldn't be too bad, I think from their website Currys have the same phone in stock, just a tenner more.

I've had problems with Next, I went on ine to order two things, massive problems with accepting my password, sorted then had to start again. One item wnet through twice, the other was for delivery last week. When it didn't arrive checked back on the website, it was showing cancelled and the item was now out of stock so ordered a similar thing from Amazon. Then got an email apologising for the delay, it would be delivered 'soon', when I phoned, after being disconnected mid call twice apparently it won't be arriving any time soon!

PraiseTheSunshine · 21/12/2022 17:22

@Mamette it used to be but I think they changed it during lock down so you have to pay when you order now.

I hope it turns up for you in time op, it's really frustrating when things like that happen.

Blueskies121 · 21/12/2022 17:43

@hellycat Check with Argos first. I've just collected an order after not receiving any notification that it was ready for collection. It should have been in by 9:00am yesterday but I hadn't received anything to say it was ready, I popped in on the off chance and it was ready they just hadn't updated me. Good luck.

spongebunnyfatpants · 21/12/2022 17:47

Op, is it a delivery or collect in store?

I had a collect in store, the item was in stock when I ordered it, but straight after ordering it said I couldn't collect it until the 24th.

I went into the store and checked on their system and it was in stock. I went to the collection point, showed them the email and the item was there waiting for me. They had no idea why that email had been sent.

If it's a collection, go to the store and check.

butterflymum · 21/12/2022 17:48

@hellycat see Currys Price Promise

Mrsmch123 · 21/12/2022 18:08

Argos done this to me with a toy kitchen! It said collect staight away then they changed it to a week later. I cancelled the order as I thought I had misread the initial date. I then reordered and it done it again!i spoke to them on the chat and they said that it's in their t&c's that this can happen. 🤦🏻‍♀️I told them that it was unfair that they changed the date after I had payed....they didn't care.

hellycat · 21/12/2022 18:21

I went to Argos in person this morning thinking it might just be a computer glitch, but no sign. Is there maybe a supply issue with Samsung phones, they don't seem to have any to sell directly instore at all, they are all showing 'collect from Monday 26'.

Currys Price Guarantee sounds promising, I will check that.

OP posts:
GlasgowGal82 · 21/12/2022 18:35

If you can afford it I'd buy one from Currys and then go to Argos and ask to cancel the order. Don't cancel the Argos order first because there's a risk Currys will sell out and you'll be back to square one!

ElfDragon · 21/12/2022 18:43

Giffgaff do next day delivery on a lot of phones, and the one I ordered last week came next day no problem. Not sure if they’ll have the one you want though, OP, but worth a look
