How do you do stockings??

Michellexxx · 19/12/2022 18:31

We have stockings but we usually open them in the living room before/after other gifts.

Does everyone open them before on a bed? When I was growing up it was a manic free for all and the stockings were only to be opened after everyone had opened all gifts and it kind of calmed us all down again!

We've always done in living room before the rest of the gifts. A lot of people do them in beds first thing. I'm tempted x

popandchoc · 19/12/2022 18:32

In living room usually and they are allowed to open them when they get up but have to wait for everyone to be up before they can do main presents.
We have done them in bedroom when had relatives staying in longue to avoid waking them up.

hiredandsqueak · 19/12/2022 18:34

Ours are hung from the dining room chairs and opened after Christmas dinner. It started this way to keep the dc at the table and then when the incentive was no longer required they wanted to keep the tradition of opening them at the table after dinner. I now have dgs who is 3 so maybe the incentive will be needed again for a few more years?

Stockings here are for entertaining children when they wake up too early. Hung on the door handle, they are full of things to look at, play with, eat. Nothing of any high value and all accessible by themselves. They tend to show them to each other and bring them to us on our bed at a reasonable time in the morning.

And NO wrapping. Far too much mess.

DorothyCannoli · 19/12/2022 18:40

We leave them outside bedroom doors, DC never liked the idea of Santa in their room! They bring them to our bed to all open together, someone makes a cuppa and lets the dog come up, so it can be carnage but fun! One of my favourite parts of Christmas. We adults do them for each other too. Everything inside is wrapped in tissue paper so its lovely and rustly.

DuchessOfDisco · 19/12/2022 18:42

Stockings here are for subduing over excited children, so they are placed on their beds to let them know, at whatever ungodly hour they wake up, that Santa’s been. They can open them as soon as they awake to manage that excitement as they are not allowed to wake us until 6am, and no going into the living room until 7am. We usually spend around £20 on stocking gifts

Sparkletastic · 19/12/2022 18:44

Stockings are absolutely for buying more sleep for parents. DCs opened theirs in their rooms then were allowed to come and show us what Father Christmas had left them only when their clock had a time that started with 7.

Tiani4 · 19/12/2022 18:44

Xmas stockings were filled with Santa gifts in our family when my DCs were young. I snuck them into their bedrooms after they went to sleep
They had a dvd in them (that's how many years ago I used to do them!) and bars of chocolate and a little toy for kids to open when they woke up on Xmas day- it gave us an extra couple hours from 5-7am Wake ups!

And then DCs would wait until after brekkie (at 9am) to open under the tree 🌲 presents ..

The memories I have as a child of waking up while it's still dark and feeling a lumpy weight on the end of the bed which definitely Was Not There at bedtime...

The quiet excitement of opening the sock (ours were hockey or football socks) and feeling around for little pens and a bouncy ball, a comic stuffed around the edge, a card game, small dolly, novelty wind-up penguins and a fun-size mars bar, some socks or gloves, a bottle of Matey (to bulk it out I guess) and the obligatory satsuma on the toe.

The knowledge that I was illicitly Opening Presents before morning, in the quiet dim light of my bedroom., settling back to read my new Twinkle while eating chocolate in bed.

That's what I want for my children.

DarkDarkNight · 19/12/2022 18:51

Upstairs in bed to buy a precious little bit more time upstairs before I have to drag myself downstairs.

Nejnej2 · 19/12/2022 18:51

When I was younger, I always jumped into bed with my parents to show off my stocking. I was allowed to open it and play beforehand, keeping me in my room until 7am or so!
Even when I was 18/19, I would still sit on my parents bed with a hangover to open my stocking (that my Dad had 100% bought from Superdrug on Christmas Eve 😅).
Planning to do the same with my son when he's old enough.

SeasonsBleatings · 19/12/2022 18:52

We leave them at the bottom of the kids' beds. It buys us a bit more time before they are allowed to wake us at 7. We have adult ones when we wake too

TeenDivided · 19/12/2022 18:53

In bed first thing. Usually including a DVD which can then be watched in the morning whilst waiting for GPs to arrive.

Lanaa · 19/12/2022 18:53

PiL have announced that they would quite like Oodies. My niece also fancies one. Doesn't anyone know where I can buy genuine ones or at least very good quality ones? The oodie website doesn't offer express delivery and I'm worried they won't be here in time. Thanks

Hoolihan · 19/12/2022 18:55

In bed, all together. Would be really sad if they opened them without me!

Beccalaaar · 19/12/2022 18:57

When I was growing up, stockings were left by Santa at the end of the bed and they gave the parents a few mins of calm before the madness of dashing downstairs or an extra few mins in bed lol

Blocked · 19/12/2022 18:57

In the living room but after reading this thread I am considering the bedroom! Only thing is DS comes into bed with me in the night so which bed would I leave the stocking in. Also our beds don't have bed posts for hanging them on.

Ideasideas · 19/12/2022 19:01

Stockings are left at the end of the bed. DC wake up early and "quietly" show one another what they got, before racing to our bedroom to show us. It's how it was when I was a kid and I can remember excitedly looking through my stocking in the middle of the night even as a teen!

Favouritefruits · 19/12/2022 19:05

The children’s stockings are left on the bedroom door handle (outside the bedroom) they are opened in my bed in the morning before we go down stairs.

We do it more like you, tree presents opened first thing and stockings/sacks are last to be opened usually an hour or two before bed so (about 6pm) as a calmer wind down.

The bedroom idea is my idea of a nightmare, aint got no time to be sneaking in excited sleeping childrens bedrooms lol.

IggyAce · 19/12/2022 19:15

Blizy · 19/12/2022 19:20

Downstairs for us. I put it in his room last year, I want counting ion ds getting up at 3am for the toilet. We were woken by excited Santa's been shrieks, and he didn't go back to sleep!
That was a very exhausted Christmas!😂

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 19/12/2022 19:21

Hung on bedroom doors, kids can then sneak into each others rooms to feel the prezzies but they dont open them till they come in our room and that is banned until 7am minimum (although putting it back to 7.30am this year as Nanny is staying over and its not fair to wake her up so early that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it 😄 )

Ruibies · 19/12/2022 19:22

We were only allowed to open our stockings after church, and presents after dinner. As such me and my brothers never learnt/bothered to get up early on Christmas since we were always going to have to get church out the way first lol.

I'm not doing that with my kids. We'll do stockings downstairs in the morning with breakfast and Buck's Fizz for the adults. But mine is still tiny so maybe once he's excited and up for it stockings will move to an end of the bed early riser treat.
