How do you do stockings??

We have stockings but we usually open them in the living room before/after other gifts.

Does everyone open them before on a bed? When I was growing up it was a manic free for all and the stockings were only to be opened after everyone had opened all gifts and it kind of calmed us all down again!

Outside bedroom doors, then they bring them into our bed and open them (not before 7am! And they have to bring us tea and coffee)- they are now 17 and 19 and STILL do it!

baconisgoodforme · 19/12/2022 19:38

Everything @Pascha said! The excitement of the weight of the stocking at the of the bed! Always had stockings there and do the same for my kids now.
In the morning we all pile into bed with a cuppa and biscuits and the kids show us everything in their stockings while we lie back with a cuppa ☕️

Largethighsbadeyes · 19/12/2022 19:39

Hung by the fireplace...then opened before any of the tree presents.

But all DS presents from santa (us) go in or under the stocking (yes its big!)

Athenen0ctua · 19/12/2022 19:40

DS would open presents in the sitting room after I got a coffee. Half pillowcase sized 'stocking' with his presents in, not separate small stocking and presents.

WomanhoodIsABirthright · 19/12/2022 19:49

Ours were on the end of our beds when we woke up and we could open them and stay upstairs and play with those for a while then when it was a more decent time we could go downstairs and open our main presents.

tealandteal · 19/12/2022 19:52

Stockings were always in our room as children and I put one in my DS’s bed now. He comes in to our room to snuggle and open his stocking, then other presents are opened after lunch.

ProtectorExtraordinaryOfTheCantonsOfNim · 19/12/2022 19:53

Beds first thing. Regular presents are for after everyone's up, dressed and had breakfast so the stockings are a bit more of a free-for-all.

PiL have announced that they would quite like Oodies. My niece also fancies one. Doesn't anyone know where I can buy genuine ones or at least very good quality ones? The oodie website doesn't offer express delivery and I'm worried they won't be here in time. Thanks

The sienna ones on Amazon are really good quality and warm

The memories I have as a child of waking up while it's still dark and feeling a lumpy weight on the end of the bed which definitely Was Not There at bedtime...

The quiet excitement of opening the sock (ours were hockey or football socks) and feeling around for little pens and a bouncy ball, a comic stuffed around the edge, a card game, small dolly, novelty wind-up penguins and a fun-size mars bar, some socks or gloves, a bottle of Matey (to bulk it out I guess) and the obligatory satsuma on the toe.

The knowledge that I was illicitly Opening Presents before morning, in the quiet dim light of my bedroom., settling back to read my new Twinkle while eating chocolate in bed.

That's what I want for my children.

That weight at the end of the bed was the most exciting thing ever! We used to go into my parents’ room to open then and I encourage my children to do the same but I don’t really mind when they have a sneaky unpack first!

Walnutwhipsarenothesame · 19/12/2022 20:03

What about if you’re doing them for adults though?

user1019273703 · 19/12/2022 20:08

Stockings are opened in bed here and then we move downstairs to main presents under the tree.

TeaAndToastx2 · 19/12/2022 20:13

We have small stockings filled with little gifts, not some of the more expensive things others have. So chocolate, pot of slime, hot wheels car, hair bows, that kind of thing. My two are just 5 and 3 though. Nothing is wrapped and us parents get one too. They go on the end of the bed or on the floor next to the bed and so far they’ve come into our bed to open them. At some point we make a quick tea and bring it to bed while they look at the stuff or eat a chocolate!

This year the eldest has said he’s going to wake his little sister and open them while we’re still sleeping. If they do I’ll be sad as I love it all together, but I have such fantastic memories of doing the exact same in the dark as children, the excitement of feeling the stocking so I can’t blame them!

Michellexxx · 19/12/2022 20:20

So lots of bedtime opening! I’d be quite sad if I didn’t see them opening them but I quite like the idea of doing it altogether on our bed.

But I equally love walking into the living room to check if he’s been!

End of the bed for us, too. When I was little, The stocking was a delaying tactic and I would open it by myself, and then go to my parents' room after 6.30 to show them what I'd got. My kids just bring them into our bed and we all open our stockings together. The adults get stockings, too. Then we play with the stocking presents/eat the stocking snacks/ read the stocking magazines for a bit before going going downstairs to have breakfast and then open the main presents.

Notanotherone6 · 19/12/2022 20:44

We do stockings downstairs, next to their sacks, and they're always opened first. I couldn't cope with sneaking into their rooms to fill them, or even messing around outside their doors. I have 5 to fill and it's so much easier to just be able to shut the lounge door and get on with it. We don't open them in our bed for the same reason, too many kids!

Having said that, I have never been woken up before 8am on Christmas morning, so don't need to bide time!

whowantssmore · 19/12/2022 20:53

I put them in the kids room and they usually open them around 3am. It keeps them busy until I agree to get up. But not before 6.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 19/12/2022 20:54

They get hung on the fireplace like they are meant to be.

Fivesixseven8 · 19/12/2022 20:57

We do end of the bed too. A few little things that they can be entertained with whilst we wake up from usually a late night of last minute prep! I love hearing them so excited, telling each other what they got and then coming into our bed to show us.

TearsNReindeers · 19/12/2022 20:59

When my kids were young and believed in FC, we left them in their rooms and they brought them in to our room and opened them on our bed. I miss those days!

Once they stopped believing, we leave them downstairs near the ‘fireplace’ (non-working and can’t hang anything from the mantelpiece!).

PushingAnElephantUpTheStairs · 19/12/2022 23:19

End of the bed in our house too. It's what DH and I did as kids as well.

There is nothing like the excitement of waking up to feel your stocking by your feet.

My eldest DC open theirs then bring them to our bed (minus a few chocolate coins) to show us what is inside. The youngest has always opened theirs with us so far.

I love hearing them begin to stir and know that they are looking through them then showing each other before heading in to us.

It's one of my favourite parts of Christmas.

YuliaJollyberry · 20/12/2022 09:37

Up early and in the lounge whilst having a picnic for breakfast. Everyone gets one and we all dive in together. Opened after the selection boxes and before presents under the tree.

PinkHeadphones · 20/12/2022 09:39

Kids bring the stockings into our room at an agreed time and open them while we are lying in bed.
When I was little we took them downstairs and opened them with my parents, before breakfast.
In both cases then the presents from family are opened one by one, so it isn't a manic free for all. Santa only brings stockings here.

Lucky91 · 20/12/2022 09:47

My children leave them at the end of their bed and then me and DH sneak in before bed to retrieve them and fill them up and then put them back. Our children wake on Christmas morning and come into our room with their stockings and see what they've got. Then we go downstairs to open presents.

The get left under the tree, and opened before the main gifts, one gift at a time, all taking it in turns.
