Anyone else having trouble trying to get into a WHSmiths roll of wrapping paper?
I get that they are doing away with the plastic cellophane which is good but did anyone at design HQ actually test that the 'tear here' strip actually does tear😡. I have teeny weeny bits of black sticky paper all over the floor and I'm still not there yet. Maybe I have bought three dodgy rolls?

@HootyMcboob76 I've had the same today with dunelm paper. 4 bloody stickers and none of them could be removed without attacking them with scissors.

Daffodilsandtuplips · 15/12/2022 23:31

I’m sticking with Aldi wrap…Been caught out with wrapping paper disasters before.
Anyone remember Tesco’s gold glitter wrapping paper? Possibly the worst gift wrap ever. I use my ironing board to wrap presents, have done for years, never been a problem…until 2019, the year of the glitter fest.
The bloody glitter came off as soon as it was touched, the paper itself was hard to work with, hard to fold the corners in and gift tags wouldn’t stay on due to the excess glitter.
I was covered in gold glitter from head to foot, like an extra from Goldfinger, the Bond movie. Had to bin the I/Board cover, Imwas still hoovering glitter from the carpet 6 month later.

Gift bags are your friend. Plus the can be re-used by the receiver and next receiver and next receiver for eternity.

UWhatNow · 15/12/2022 23:49

I nearly cried when I stabbed a hole in the entire roll of Tesco paper trying to deal with the fecking things… glad I wasn’t alone in my frustration, Christmas puts you on the edge at the best of times but those tabs are a new level of hell.

Notatallanamechange · 16/12/2022 01:07

But you just remove the labels carefully? Genuinely I hate things that leave a mark but just gently under the tab and slowly pulling it off, jobs a goodun!

NoSun · 16/12/2022 01:14

I wish I had read this before buying Tesco paper to last minute wrap teacher gifts, what a faff! Tiny bits of the peel here sticker that wouldn’t peel everywhere and half a roll missing as I had to hack into it.
I knew I should’ve got the stuff in home bargains that was on offer !

They don't peel. Something has obviously gone wrong in the factory or something, because they literally do not peel off. They must have used the wrong type of glue or something, its not a peelable label.
Honestly. Four of us tried to do it. I even challenged WHSmith customer services to do it. They refunded my money.
I've a feeling they have had a lot of complaints.

RhubarbFairy · 16/12/2022 02:03

Not just me that struggled to get into the Tesco paper then.

I understand that they're was more to allow for the wastage containing the stickers, but you need to let me actually be able to peel the bastard things!

LadyVictoriaSponge · 16/12/2022 02:12

Same with Sainsburys, glad it’s not just me, I actually lost my temper, I managed to ruin a whole roll of paper trying to peel off the wretched things, ended up in the bin. I’ve decided that is me finished with wrapping paper full stop and have ordered a large roll of brown paper and string, sound of music style, life is too short for this annoying shit.

Holly6547 · 16/12/2022 05:59

We bought some from Waitrose on offer and they actually did peel off. A few of the stickers took the tiniest bit of the print with it but nothing really noticeable. It was fairly fuss free in case anyone is still looking.

Elderflower14 · 16/12/2022 06:14

Co op wrapping paper is the same... It looked like a rat had been at the paper by the time I got the bands off the middle!!!!

panko · 16/12/2022 06:34

How does this work? I don't understand - how do they protect the paper in the shop is it wrapped in paper?

Mine was from paperchase but we used it all so I need to go to tesco to get some more but might find somewhere else if they've made it too hard.

Y7drama · 16/12/2022 06:38

Buy Lidl paper next time, am very impressed!

TeddyTed · 16/12/2022 06:50

Yes! I opened Tesco wrapping paper last night and it was such a nightmare with the four stickers. And the paper itself is so cheap and nasty. I really regret buying it. I might have to try Lidl for some more as some pp have mentioned.

LakieLady · 16/12/2022 09:46

Thanks to the pp for the hairdryer tip.

I haven't started my wrapping yet, you have undoubtedly saved me from massive amounts of foul-mouthed rage.

caramac04 · 16/12/2022 09:49

I bought recyclable paper with those sticky bits on. Nightmare! 4 on each blinking roll!
Thank you Pp’s who said to heat the sticky bits first. Genius!

Glitterandcard · 16/12/2022 11:29

Bring back the cellophane! Or wrap the roll in a paper “envelope” of some kind that’s separate to the actual paper on the roll. But those sticky strips are absolutely bloody awful and even if you get them off the ends of the paper are ragged from being unprotected in the shop/trolley. Grrrr

HootyMcboob76 · 16/12/2022 11:36

Yep, the cellophane was great.
I actually saw one of these "in the factory" type TV programmes a while ago that showed you can now get completely biodegradable cellophane, its made from some kind of starchy stuff.
Maybe that would be an option.

I still have about 6 rolls of the crap in my garage to get rid of.

fairgame84 · 16/12/2022 11:40

Feckin sainsbury's just rips. I tried really carefully peeling but nope. It gave me the rage.

Limer · 16/12/2022 11:45

I've not had this problem, but please can someone post a picture to illustrate what's going wrong? I'm ridiculously invested in this!

peachescariad · 16/12/2022 11:54

Yep Tesco wrap was a complete nightmare....resorted to small knife to try to remove the 4 stickers along the 'zip' mark....ended up with pile of paper bits and one roll now has a hole so now I have to use extra Sellotape over it when I'm wrapping...wasted 20 effing minutes removing sticker from 6 rolls.
Why not just use a brown paper sleeve or part sleeve?......I miss the cellophane!

peachescariad · 16/12/2022 11:56

Haha love this! So true!

Circumferences · 15/12/2022 21:53

Oh my god I ended up swearing at the wrapping paper from WHS and it now has a repeat pattern hole through the entire bloody roll from trying to unpeel the evil label.

They could surely just use a rubber band or something? Then at least you'd get the paper and a lovely spare rubber band.

Evil. Evil. Evil.

😂

Mine looks like one of those snowflakes that kids cut out of folded paper. **

wonkylegs · 16/12/2022 12:23

Morrison's peel stickered paper seems to peel fine - all of mine opened ok

Tidsleytiddy · 16/12/2022 12:50

Yes same with the Co op rolls of Christmas paper. I ordered individual sheets from Amazon and I’ve chucked the Co op paper in the cupboard under the stairs. Infuriating
