My husband has binned the Christmas decorations

…yes really.

We’ve still got the tree thank goodness, but was putting it up with the children, when I asked him to go and fetch the rest of the decorations. He then disappeared to the garage and the loft for a very long time, before coming back and very sheepishly saying he has a vague memory of accidentally taking them to the tip.

Since I’m now starting totally afresh, would anyone like to share where they have bought nice ones from?! Especially since DH will be paying!!

Neptune do lovely tree decorations. Already reduced in their online outlet so no need to wait for January sales … neptuneoutlet.com/collections/christmas

Omg I’d be more than furious. I think this is worse than the disaster of 2015 when DH insisted he didn’t need to back up the camera after several important events and then rushed me off a plane with a baby and toddler not giving me a chance to make sure we had everything. We didn’t, including several milestone baby moments caught on the camera 😭

Im not sure I’d go expensive necessarily. I like to go big, I tend to have several themes going through the house and I stock up on basics at homebargins, got a few bits in Poundland over the years, it’s hit an miss though. I’ve bought things in the past for a pound then seen them on eBay for £5 or £10 because they are no longer available. Not too impressed this year, I was in today but nothing I’d buy.

I had an idea today which will take about 100+ baubles to achieve, so I’ve started my shop in charity shops to see how many I can get for 10p each before I buy from main retailers. I bought about 15 in one shop, will hit a few more this week. To be honest, even though I do charity shop, especially for toys, I’ve never really look at Christmas decorations properly until this year and I’ve picked up a few nice bargains the last couple of weeks including a lovely table cloth and other themed material to give my dd along with her new sewing machine.

I add to my basics with collectibles I’ve collected over the years. I don’t mind paying more for these. Usually ones I’ve bought through travelling.

I’d definitely try to replace baby ones if I could before your DCs know or understand what’s happened. If they know then I’d probably look at a reboot, getting them this years with take 2 or 2.0 written on them or something as a joke. My DCs are still young and would find this funny for most things. We’ve always bought the new baby a bailable from their sisters and vice versa so they’d enjoy re-buying what they supposedly bought each other as babies. At least now they get to choose themselves.

I have lots of beautiful glass ones I’ve bought over the years but I haven’t put these up because of the DCs. I was going to one year but then bought some glass ones from Aldi as fillers, which I thankfully put up fist, 4 out of six were smashed within minutes. My oldest got given a very special significant limited edition bauble the year she was born, it’s no longer available, so that alone would totally piss me off, given I’m the one that carefully makes sure everything is packed away safely.

As you can see I take Christmas very seriously 😆 And to be fair, I doubt DH could easily throw our decorations out, they take up 2 patio box’s, 2 large wheeley containers, 4 bauble boxs & a giant storage bag (I also bought a new box & bag today)l That’s those I can think of, dose not including what I’ve bought this year and also doesn’t include the suitcase full of Christmas themed clothes and pjs 😬

I think I’m going to go out tomorrow and get some cheap baubles to put on the tree. Because it’s currently up in the lounge but bare. And it seems a bit sad to take it down again, but also a bit sad having it up for a week while I wait for whatever I could order online to be delivered with the postal strike. So I’ll buy some cheap ones, maybe if I have time I’ll go somewhere where I can maybe get a few nicer ones… then perhaps keep an eye out in the January sales to replace the collection.

I do feel quite gutted. Trying not to let it show as I can tell DH is feeling guilty and it wasn’t intentional

We did a halloween themed one one year for a party we had. I didn’t want to take it down just to put it up again, but wasn’t ready for Xmas decs on so I gave the dcs free rein over it for a few weeks. It tended to alternate between Barbie dolls and cuddly toys. Looked better than my main tree 😂 Just tell them to go wild until you get new decs x

I've been getting some vintage/interesting baubles from eBay this year. All my Christmas stuff is in storage so I'm in the same position.

Where is this sale?

warofthemonstertrucks · 30/11/2022 06:37

Ours all got lost in a house fire earlier in the year. Of all the things that we lost those (and the DD's baby stuff) are the things I'm most upset about. I had loads, and all the ones the girls picked each year which we labelled up for them with the aim of them having their own set for their own trees when they move out. We have got some cheap filler ones and I've bought a few nice posh ones from the garden centre to replace them but honestly I don't even feel like putting them up Sad

Forgotthebins · 30/11/2022 06:56

I really like the idea from PP of having family and friends gift you a bauble each so you get some ones with meaning. Also the idea of starting just with lights, red ribbon (or sparkly ribbon?) and sweeties and build up from there.

fancyacuppatea · 30/11/2022 07:21

@IDontDrinkTea Can I suggest you get a big CLEAR plastic storage crate with lid and keep everything in that...or 2 of them if needed. At least that way he can see then and won't be able to chuck them a second time. 🤦‍♀️

Peridot1 · 30/11/2022 08:37

@ITSSSSCHRISTMASSS - your collection sounds a bit like mine! We moved house two years ago and the removal men couldn’t believe how many boxes of stuff marked XMAS there were.

@warofthemonstertrucks - I am sorry. That’s really upsetting.

@IDontDrinkTea - Brand Alley have some decorations really reduced. A nice little set of Gisela Graham mini decorations plus some nice baubles. Might work well with a few boxes of plain baubles from Tesco or similar. Also depending on your style West Elm have some nice ones.

MrsMitford3 · 30/11/2022 08:40

I don't know where you are @IDontDrinkTea but Longacres Garden centre in Bagshot and Burford Garden Centre in Oxford are worth the trip!!!!

Commiserations and enjoy your tree!

Fairnair · 30/11/2022 08:45

Oh no that’s a shame OP. Sorry you are feeling gutted, but does seem it was a genuine mistake. I don’t. Actually don’t have any sentimental tree decorations, husband and I have been married 15 years but the original traditional red, green and gold ones (only cheap ones) have been replaced with a frosty theme in white, silver, blues etc.

I do love the really lovely glass decorations you can get, but they do get broken, & now have a cat who likes to climb the tree, so from a safety point of view shatterproof is necessary.

I bought a nice set of tree decs from Home Bargains in silver, but they had them in gold & pink too, think they were £4.99, (pic below) also had large tubs of baubles for about £15. I would probably get a few sets from shops like Home Bargains, B&M, Asda etc., to start you off, & then look out for some vintage ones in charity shops, get some special ones in the sales etc.

Puddywoodycat · 01/12/2022 07:16

Basics from.wilko.etc for the basic sets then add fancy, different ones in via tk max/homesense etc

Puddywoodycat · 01/12/2022 07:18

@Fairnair

Wow that is a lovely set!!

We don't have home bargain here but that's impressive! Lot's of variety as well !

liarliarshortsonfire · 01/12/2022 07:19

Hobby craft to get stuff to major things, the kids will love it

Then off to a lovely garden centre without the kids for the nice stuff

IDontDrinkTea · 29/11/2022 20:22

I do believe it was a genuine mistake. They were in a cardboard box in the garage, he was doing a sort out and had a pile of cardboard boxes to take to the tip. Got back from the tip, found a pile of boxes he thought he’d already taken. Looking back, he says he realises he’d taken the Xmas decs the first trip instead of taking the boxes he meant to take. He is rather apologetic and has promised to pay for whatever I choose to replace my collection with.

Would it be strange to reorder baubles that say ‘baby’s first Xmas’ with a previous year on it?! It’s a bit sad those ones are gone.

Yes very strange.

IDontDrinkTea · 01/12/2022 08:54

Right, I’ve bought some new lights from the range and some new basic baubles from b&m. My lounge looks Christmassy again (my bare tree was very sad looking!)

Am going to wait til I can go shopping without children to go to the garden centre and choose some lovely ones to top it up. Kids tend to whizz through in three seconds then moan Im taking ages 😂

You asked the question so you must have an inkling it is strange.
