Am I a miserable cow?

Does anyone else thinking Christmas goes on forever now?

Been away at the weekend and all the bars/restaurants were decked out (which was lovely) yet the Christmas markets weren't open.

I just think it's getting out of hand. No one used to put their decorations up in November. As my nana would say "people will think you're not right" but now it's the norm?

By time Christmas comes round I'm done with it and the excitement/festive feels isn't the same!

I love seeing sparkly lights up during the long winter months - they cheer me up so much. I don’t put up Christmas decorations until a week or 10 days before Christmas, but anything that lifts the gloom of the dark winter evenings is good, imo.

Toddlerteaplease · 20/11/2022 20:10

It really pisses me off. It's not even Christmas till 25th December anyway.

I love Christmas, but agree it’s too early. Should be from Dec 1st.

Thats Advent. Not Christmas

grafittiartist · 20/11/2022 20:11

Na- every year I have this battle.
Way to early. Takes over second part of the year if your not careful, and overshadows other things like bonfire night etc.

TwoMonthsOff · 20/11/2022 20:11

@floppybit 20% 😂you are right 😂😂😂ridiculous

Luredbyapomegranate · 20/11/2022 20:13

I don’t think it’s new, it always started almost post summer in retail..

But I agree Dec 1st is early enough. Saying that I am going to see some Christmas lights switched on this weekend so..

Haha 😂 she got worse as she got older.. she said something once (won't divulge) and I quickly replied "you cannot say that" she said "why not. Can say what you want if it's right" 🤦🏼‍♀️

Cute little old ladies can get away with it! my grandma was the same, may she rest in peace (with a smirk on her face at her legacy of below the belt comments ) 😅

Radiatorvalves · 20/11/2022 20:14

I’ve got a friend who has done all her cards and presents and started on the food. I’m hibernating for the next 4 weeks. Well, just getting on with mundane stuff….

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 20/11/2022 20:15

I used to work in events so Christmas started in August for me for years. It's very weird to hold off until December but I think DH would leave me if I tried to deck the halls in November.

Reluctantadult · 20/11/2022 20:16

Starting Christmas festivities on 1st Dec would be about right by me by personal choice. But now I've got kids it's just impossible! There was a lovely Christmas Market in town today with Father Christmas and the lights switched on. Next weekend we've got a Christmas activity booked with mil. At school they've got Christmas disco, film night, drama performance, orchestra and choir all before 16 Dec. Also I never used to shop before 1 Dec and that would be a nightmare now! So just going with it now. Its that or scrooge it! No decs here until Dec 1st though!!!

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 20/11/2022 20:17

Mind we have started on the gentler Christmas films because otherwise we never get to see them all if you have to cram them all into 3 weekends around all the christmas parties and commitments

Toddlerteaplease · 20/11/2022 20:18

@TwoMonthsOff well technically 12 days!

MissBPotter · 20/11/2022 20:19

I’m not looking forward to it at all this year really. Seems pointless, kids have enough toys but we do need practical stuff like beds, clothes etc which feel like mean gifts. Limited budget despite both working very hard and beating nearly forty. No plans whatsoever, no parties or events booked and u likely to be any either.
Going to my parents for lunch and it won’t seem very special somehow. I have zero Xmas spirit at the moment!

TwoMonthsOff · 20/11/2022 20:30

@Toddlerteaplease in my case its 11 days off work thanks goodness 😀

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 20/11/2022 20:32

Restaurants usually have it up early as part of their advertisement for their christmas bookings.

I LOVE Christmas and I do start organising and buying early, but more from a financial standpoint than anything else. But I think decorating the house before 1st dec is bonkers!!!

A house near us went from USA level Halloween decorations on 31st Oct to Blackpool illumination level christmas decorations on the outside of their house on 1st Nov. I dont even know how the find the time to make the switch so fast 🤣

I think the extended christmas period put too much stress on people to be festive for too long. Gotta fill all those weekends with Santa experiences, Christmas markets, light displays etc etc.

wewishyouamerrychristmas · 20/11/2022 20:38

Each to their own I say. I don’t do anything until 1 December but I know people with their decorations up already. That’s their choice. If it makes them happy get on with it. It’s nothing to do with me.

Bestcatmum · 20/11/2022 20:47

I Ioathe Christmas and just don't do it. I live on my own so I don't have to.
It's a massive waste of money, very stressful and I can't see the point of it.
The last Xmas I enjoyed was with my grandparents in 1968 when it snowed all week and was magical. Every Xmas since then has been crap.0

Irishfarmer · 20/11/2022 20:48

I don't put up the tree/ decorations until 8th Dec. But since I was a child in the 90s I remember people saying 'Christmas is earlier and earlier' so I don't think it's a new thing

AutumnCrow · 20/11/2022 20:49

Openmouthinsertfood · 20/11/2022 19:57

And yet you, and others on this thread, are in the Christmas section???

It's probably being suggested somewhere in that daftie box that's popped up recently before you get to the 'Add your message here box'. It was called 'Other threads you might like' for a while and it's currently 'Similar threads'.

It's not really posters' faults for clicking on MNHQ's own suggestions. This new feature is unfortunately going to encourage cross-over between the Christmas and AIBU boards.

APotatoFlewAcrossTheRoomLastNightExcuseTheMess · 20/11/2022 20:51

I used to be on the anti-November side... Now its a case of 'I've spend hundreds on decs, might aswell make the most of it!' whatever makes people happy... we've been through covid and now cost of living, if cosy twinkly lights makes a miserable winter more bearable, go for it!

TwoMonthsOff · 20/11/2022 20:51

@Bestcatmum
I like it as extended break from work, lovely cheeses in the shops that you cant normally find easily, and mini twiglets in a tub , apart from that i I am with you totally 😊

Crikeyalmighty · 20/11/2022 20:52

@AuntieStella we've been living in Copenhagen for last 2 xnas(although back now) and most people have outside lights all still up both domestic and commercial till mid/late Feb!! Made Jan/Feb a lot cheerier

DariaMorgendorffer · 20/11/2022 22:14

I'm the same op. Love Christmas, but at Christmas time, which to me is December!

hattie43 · 20/11/2022 22:14

I don't do anything festive except a bit of wrapping before December. Christmas stretches out too long now and for me anything over two weeks means the magic goes .
