Controversial Christmas Opinions

Here's mine:

  1. Elf isn't that good. Engaging at the beginning, but once he's in the US it gets pretty boring

  2. Turkey has an awful after taste

It is odd how so many parents insist on the idea that Santa is a man who must be believed in. We have never told our children Santa is real and they are not miserable or missing out on the magic of it all. In fact, if anyone thinks ‘the magic’ is reliant on believing in Santa, then they’re doing Christmas wrong.

FourChimneys · 19/11/2022 07:52

One more, before I get on with my day.

Father Christmas should go back to his green clothes and stop being an advert for Coca Cola.

ivegotthisyeah · 19/11/2022 07:52

Red cabbage doesn't appear on my plate enough during the year I actually love it.
The kids don't need to see multiple Santa's on the run up to Christmas
Kids don't need all the plastic tat so that gone this year

Ihavedogs · 19/11/2022 08:04

@Inasec24 I love exchanging adult presents as well, but we do have a small family which I think does make a difference.

Saddogmum73 · 19/11/2022 08:14

Christmas Eve boxes and matching pyjamas is shite.
I hate that people can no longer be arsed to put effort into thinking about what to buy people or they give vouchers.
The ‘obligation’ to go and visit everyone on the day.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 19/11/2022 08:14

Do they know it's Christmas is the best Christmas song. Banging tune. The "oh but the lyrics are so patronising" brigade can bugger off. The first thread whinging about it will arrive any day now.

gogohmm · 19/11/2022 08:15

That beef is far nicer than turkey but goose is better still- however it's far too messy, too much fat making a mess of my stove!

Autumflower · 19/11/2022 08:16

The turkeys do not want to be eaten ,they want to live and enjoy their best life .

imagine if it was dog on the menu for Christmas, and dogs in farms up and down the country being bred to be eaten …

turkey no different,
it feels pain being killed the same as dog

tara66 · 19/11/2022 08:17

It's all a big commercial con..

LtMoose · 19/11/2022 08:22

Boxing day is the best day of the year

FourChimneys · 19/11/2022 08:22

Autumnflower Absolutely.

Or roast kitten. How would that be acceptable?

I knew some parents who told their DC that chicken meat was made from wheat, it wasn't actually dead chicken 🙄

Sux2buthen · 19/11/2022 00:14

Something to wear
Something to read
Something you want
Something you need

Is the most joyless poem or rule I've ever heard of

Couldn't agree more. I don't think this is controversial but if you're a kid something to wear and something you need are both things your parents should've bought you anyway so is a waste of a present.

Poor kids ,wow ,awful thing to tell them

DooNotAsISay · 19/11/2022 08:39

Turkey is vile.
So is Christmas cake, Christmas pudding and mince pies.
Bread sauce is vomit.
Don’t tell your kids the tree presents are from Santa
Taking your kids out of school for the day to go to Lapland/winter wonderland etc is naff. Especially in November.
People who do starters for Christmas dinner are mad. Just how many MORE calories do you think you need on Christmas Day?
For too many people celebrating Christmas, I just see greed.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 19/11/2022 08:44

Clearly unpopular but I bloody love Christmas 🤣. We usually host my extended family (my siblings etc), although sadly they have become fewer in recent years.
For me Christmas starts with the Carol Service (18th this year). Put up the Christmas tree and decorations on Christmas Eve, go to Midnight Mass. We have a fairly trad Christmas lunch (but include Yorkshire puddings). Bubble and squeak for Boxing day morning & a lamb roast dinner later.
Decorations and tree down on 12th night.
It's the best time of the year. (With the possible exception of Lent because I love singing miserable minor key anthems)

Blinky21 · 19/11/2022 08:53

Christmas happens too often and should be only once every few years

dworky · 19/11/2022 08:56

We shouldn't lie to our children re. Father Christmas.

Toomanybooks22 · 19/11/2022 08:57

Boxing Day is better then Christmas Day cause it has everything Christmas Day has without the pressure.

frozendaisy · 19/11/2022 08:58

Elf on a Shelf is just fucking insane, and not in a good way.

RosesAndHellebores · 19/11/2022 08:59

Making delicious bread sauce is soothing. Pushing the garlic cloves in the onion, gently bringing the milk to simmer. Steeping the onion and cloves overnight in the milk, in the fridge. Then a buttery white sauce made with the milk and gently adding the breadcrumbs, seasoning and popping in a little bowl with a lid to keep warm.

EdvardMunchsMuse · 19/11/2022 09:00

I love turkey.

I love blue Christmas lights.

Yorkshire puddings are essential for any roast dinner, regardless of the meat choice.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 19/11/2022 09:00

The Christmas tree has to be real. A plastic tree is an abomination.

loudbatperson · 19/11/2022 09:02

People who don't "do" Father Christmas because "I don't want someone else taking the credit for the presents" sound like petulant having a temper tantrum because they are not getting enough attention.

I don't disagree with other reasons for not doing Father Christmas, but that one always gets my back up for some reason.

Fairytale of New York is bloody awful.

Agreed I’ll never listen to it again.

Wheelz46 · 19/11/2022 07:50

Die Hard is not a Christmas movie! 😁

What about Batman Returns?
