Christmas decorations.. for the ceiling?

PaganOfTheGoodTimes · 08/11/2022 11:00

So I'm a true child of the eighties so i need to have ceiling decorations at christmas.. I love the ones in the picture, but want an updated look! Our house has high ceilings and the living room is a big room so I'd need a minimum of 4 lots of 6m length, and I'm struggling to find anything the right size/right colour scheme (silver, turquoise) or anything really! Any suggestions? Is this not a thing any more?

Yeah I agree, I’m interested in this too. The ones I bought in the 90s have all fallen apart now.

Google Christmas ceiling garland, loads come up. Not sure on sizes. I too am a child of the 70s/80s and I love those decorations. We had them everywhere, and fold out foil ones which were like huge colourful snowflakes hanging from the corners of the room. If I could get things to stick here I'd do the same🤩

Get yourselves to the pound shop, I get them there every year. I've also bought them off amazon when covid, didn't allow for non essential shopping.

MammaWeasel · 08/11/2022 11:55

Try wilko or poundland

AverageDuck · 08/11/2022 12:00

I saw some in Asda this week, I can't comment on colours or length as it was just a passing oh wow, I remember those and carried on walking! The only thing I would say is also think how you're going to stick them to the ceilings? My Mum pushed pins through the artex ceiling and it weren't overly noticeable after Christmas- if you have beautiful smooth ceilings however!

I’m a child of the 90s/00s but these give me such nostalgia for my grandparents house in London. It’s made me feel all warm and fuzzy, thanks OP!

The Range or local garden centres. Usually with the tinsel

Moonshine86 · 09/11/2022 22:09

I saw some today in my local proper job shop - lovely colours and hanging stars also!

NellyTimes · 09/11/2022 23:18

The Range have some really lovely colourful ones.

Linnet · 09/11/2022 23:27

I have these, I got them in Woolworths, I miss Woolworths for things like this. I don't put them up anymore as they're quite old and delicate. But I always liked them, as they remind me of Christmas as a child.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 10/11/2022 00:56

I got some on Amazon a few years ago in rose gold. They looked fab for our 70s Christmas.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 10/11/2022 08:11

We always used to have these as a child (60s/70s), and I had them when first married. Then decided they were a bit naff so haven't had them for years. And now reading this thread I feel like I really need them again!!!

Off to follow up the suggested sources!

Not what you asked but while we're talking ceiling decorations... friends of mine always make paper chains for their hallway. No children, they just sit down together one night with a bottle of Baileys and make them. Something they've done since married and couldn't afford decorations. They now cut up strips of weekend newspaper magazines. Look absolutely fab.

What a lovely tradition your friends have , Rocking!

It's so romantic isn't it?

bettytaghetti · 10/11/2022 08:36

Does anyone else get the smell 'memory' whenever they see pictures of these decorations too?!

bettytaghetti · 10/11/2022 08:39

@AverageDuck you can get tiny Command hooks that are brilliant for hanging this sort of thing

Although they probably wouldn't be good with artex! 😂

Era · 10/11/2022 08:51

I have white paper ones which I bought on amazon a few years ago. They have silver and gold glitter on the tips. They're really pretty

Speedweed · 10/11/2022 09:15

Ooh @bettytaghetti yes, definitely! That special foil smell was THE smell of Christmas. Such a lovely memory, thank you for the reminder! I must get some now.

Floydthebarber · 10/11/2022 09:23

Cheap pound shops. We got loads for our office a few years ago. They look so festive!

Also mixed with a slight musty/dusty smell where they’d been in the loft 😆

I used to love the smell of tinsel but the new stuff just isn’t the same.

Jaybird43 · 10/11/2022 13:52

@HotSauceCommittee I'm in the SW and we have a Proper Job - really want to go and have a look for some christmas decorations now!

JonahAndTheSnail · 10/11/2022 14:15

Wilko have them in red or gold, £1.50 for just under 3 metres: www.wilko.com/en-uk/wilko-basic-gold-foil-garland-2-pack/p/0419925 . Bought some a few years back and they have lasted well!

Puddywoodycat · 10/11/2022 20:47
