INTRODUCTION

Nigel begins his Chronicles proper on 1st November, but there is a lovely, quite lengthy introduction we can dip into during the second half of October.

Last year, posters were also kind enough to share where they had found cut price copies of CC, so hopefully anyone late to the party still has time to find a copy before we start the first chapter.

I had forgotten the lovely introduction. Together with the beautiful photograph at the very beginning of the book, flipping through it and seeing his headings reminded me of why I loved it so much last year!

Can I join this year? I asked for it for Christmas last year and got it - it's covered in dust on my windowsill with my summer reading, but I want to do it properly this year Smile

ElizabethBennetismybestfriend · 16/10/2022 19:30

Can I join? I have always wanted to do this

Dillidilly · 16/10/2022 19:31

Of course! No need to ask, everyone welcome x

Right! Reporting for duty! i must admit I got this after seeing a pre thread on it, and wasn't particularly impressed when it arrived. I expected something with bigger pages...

I'll join in and see if I catch the bug!

Pulling up a seat, looking forward to this, first year. Have had a wee flick through the first part of the book, had to really hold back from getting stuck right in too early. Hello to everyone.

zinfanfan · 16/10/2022 22:15

Joining in. Excited!

Trumpton · 16/10/2022 22:17

I am eyeing up my copy on my bedside table. Can’t wait.

NiqueNique · 16/10/2022 22:21

Had my first little read of the intro tonight. Needed a few moments of hygge!

Started as I mean to go on, with a lovely slow enjoyment of the first few pages. By candlelight, naturally, and with the smallest sip of Grand Armagnac (we’ve a big day tomorrow so no over-indulging tonight!). I found a set of crystal port glasses to add to our small collection. £4 and perfect for a low-key, low-spend Christmas.

I’ll re-read in the next couple of days once everyone else has started and the chat begins. 😊

I can't find my copy 😢. Its not with my cookbooks and my Christmas cookbooks aren't where I usually store them out of season. Disaster! Just as well it doesn't start quite yet.

NiqueNique · 16/10/2022 23:25

Tucked under your bed? Or at the back of your bedside drawer?

ConstantlyCooking · 16/10/2022 23:34

I bought a copy last year but began too late so looking forward to reading along with you all this year.

Franticbutterfly · 17/10/2022 00:02

It's on Scribd - audiobook as well as a digital copy of the printed version.

You can get a couple of months free if you sign up with my link.

I just ordered the book. Can't wait to join in this year!

Runforwine · 17/10/2022 09:04

@EerilyDevilled I lost my copy too. I ended up buying it again, last week from amazon. It cost £10.88 secondhand and is in really good condition. I'm hust waiting on the other one turning up now!

MuffinFeatures · 17/10/2022 10:07

I’m hunting round for a reasonably priced copy, keeping 🤞🏻 I can find one and join in for the start! 🎄

It does contain lots of recipes but it's not a cookbook. It's more a book about autumn and winter, a lot of lovely descriptions of what is going on in the garden, of visiting Christmas markets, of celebrating the colder months and the darker nights. He's an excellent, evocative writer and I found it quite uplifting reading it last year. I often felt a bit sad about the nights drawing in and the weather getting colder but this book reminded me that there's lots of joy to be had in these months. It's festive but more than just Christmas as it starts at the beginning of November and goes on well into the New Year. There's usually a short chapter/few pages of musings and then a recipe or sometimes more than one at the end.

Someone asked about veggie recipes. I can't remember how many but there are plenty of veggie meals in there.....the only ones I made from the book last year were vegetarian ones.

Thanks so much, sounds excellent. I want to buy one but seems expensive, might give it a week to see if I can find a cheaper copy on ebay etc.

BraveMaeve · 17/10/2022 10:18

Actually just found a copy for £13.95 on Amazon which sounds reasonable so bought it!

MuddyLuddy · 17/10/2022 10:20

Mines arriving today.

CryHavoc · 17/10/2022 11:00

Ooh, I love the idea of this. Getting it off the shelf and will be joining in.

SausageEggBeans · 17/10/2022 11:29

Thx for WHSmiths heads up. I’m thinking of getting them as gifts for my friends this Christmas.
I need 9!

MarisPiper92 · 17/10/2022 16:16

I keep thinking today is going to be the day I start the intro, but it's too warm and sunny! V pleased this thread is up and running again though, was so lovely last year.

Noeggsontoast · 17/10/2022 17:49

I bought a copy last year and delighted to see this thread. I'm looking forward to joining in. I've only flicked through and have been waiting for the season to start.

StarDog · 17/10/2022 18:10

Just listened to the sample on audible and think I might be buying the audible version as well just listen to Nigel narrate!

LillianGish · 17/10/2022 18:38

Great to see this back @Dillidilly - I read along last year and intend to do the same again, this time with my Cire Trudon Carmelite candle (gift from DH - the greatest love token ever as it was ridiculously expensive, he can't see the point, but he bought me one anyway because he knew I would love it). Counting down with Nigel is the best Christmas tradition.

ShakeYourFeathers · 17/10/2022 18:42

Already brought the book but had some credits on audible so downloaded on that too.
