INTRODUCTION

Nigel begins his Chronicles proper on 1st November, but there is a lovely, quite lengthy introduction we can dip into during the second half of October.

Last year, posters were also kind enough to share where they had found cut price copies of CC, so hopefully anyone late to the party still has time to find a copy before we start the first chapter.

I had forgotten the lovely introduction. Together with the beautiful photograph at the very beginning of the book, flipping through it and seeing his headings reminded me of why I loved it so much last year!

Lovely to read your childhood memory @Confusedmeanderings.

Like @Recycledblonde I’ve got a bowl of giant pine cones that I use for essential oils. A few drops and beautiful scent fills the room.

NiqueNique · 03/11/2022 09:20

@picklemewalnuts that reminds me, I need to make some vanilla sugar!

Recycledblonde · 03/11/2022 10:12

This is my reading station ready for snuggling and enjoying. Christmas Chronicles is like a hug in a book.

Ohhh I see you have that one vital snuggling station ingredient which I, sadly, do not - hygge paws! 🐾🐾🐾 🥰🥰🥰🎄🎄🎄

He insists on snuggling as soon as the candles are lit. 😀❤️🐶❤️The only thing I’m missing is an open fire, have to put up with the YouTube one on the tv which is not quite the same.

I have a dog but he's not very restful!

Does the sainted Nigel (TSN) often omit days? What am I supposed to do today? I think I'll make quinces a bit early, but still...

Yes, Nigel does miss some days, especially in January as I recall

Loving the VN reading stations! I feel he would approve, candles notwithstanding lol
Added Nigel credits for a furry hugge reading companion!

Things I never knew I needed until now.: a reading station for CC, loving the inspiration.

steppemum · 03/11/2022 12:25

I've just found this thread!
What a lovely idea.
Now I need the book.
Unfortunately it is really pricey everywhere at the moment.
I will have to try and get to WH Smith at some point. See if there are any left.

Reading Nigels booze inventions inspired me to invent my own. It's apple gin.

The apple is fresh pure apple juice pressed this week (community press at voluntary job.) Poured on a finger of gin in a cut glass tumbler. It's delish.

Confusedmeanderings · 03/11/2022 17:36

@Recycledblonde I want a reading station now! I shall have to see what I can organise!

GingerPigz · 03/11/2022 18:44

@Recycledblonde - fabulous idea! Off foraging with doggo this weekend now (weather permitting)!

I thought about trying the hot apple drink, except it started me thinking about the mulled cider we had after Carol singing as a child. I lived very rurally, not even in a village. We would gather at a local farm, a mixture of children and adults, and set off in a convoy of cars to visit all the neighbouring farms and houses. I loved going up to the houses in the dark, especially at the smaller farms where the cow sheds would be right next to the house. I remember golden light spilling out from the barn across the yard, the sound of the cattle mooing and the steam from their breath. We ended up back at our starting point where there would be a fire burning in the grate, lots of nibbles and mulled cider to drink. The mulled cider tasted wonderful; I've never been able to make one as good! I keep trying though! So, Nigel has inspired me to have another try, I'm sure it will be lovely even if it doesn't match up to my childhood memories!

Wonderful. Don't know why but this makes me think of the 1970s. Was it?

wibblewobbleboard · 03/11/2022 19:39

wibblewobbleboard · 03/11/2022 19:48

Ooh, thanks for the idea. We've also had our apples pressed (a similar community effort) We also have red apple juice from Kissabel apples.

Ooh I was so hoping this thread would appear this year. I have quite a few Nigel books but have only just nabbed this one from eBay - beyond excited for it to land on the door mat. The perfect companion to enjoy in my heated poncho while snuggling my new rescue kitten.

elephantoverthehill · 03/11/2022 21:42

Slightly quizzical about NS bringing all the tipples to the boil. Surely this gets rid of all the alcohol or maybe that's the point.

ClaudineClare · 03/11/2022 21:48

I bought a very NVN* candle today. I thought it was a festive colour.

Pinkespressomachine rules state we need a kitten picture please!

Bookaholic73 · 03/11/2022 21:51

I really want to make some of the tipples, but it’s only myself and my husband here to drink them. I’d be tipsy 24/7 😂

Confusedmeanderings · 03/11/2022 22:37

@BernieWinters you're absolutely right - it was!
