I suspect I'm not the only one who does taste tests in the run up to Christmas.I

So far I've tried

Lidl mince pies, pastry is fantastic crisp with a good flavour , let down by the filling just tastes like a mixed fruit pie
Tesco bog standard, pastry is far too crumbly it disintegrated as I took it out of its cup. The filling was much better than Lidl's with a good boozy taste.

Lidl salt and pepper mixed nuts with olives. I've never had crispy olives before but the were a revelation.
Tesco salted caramel party mix. Loving this, it has nuts, pretzel bits, chocolate covered nuts, Malteser type things , chocolate buttons. A must have.

If you've tried anything perhaps you could say what they were and what you thought of them

Has anyone tried the M&S Very Merry Munch ?

It looks like something I could hideaway till Christmas Eve ........
According to searching it's chocolate popcorn, chicolate pretzels, chicolatr peanuts and carmel almonds (or along those lines )

I’ve tried Waitrose all butter mini mince pies and Aldi almond mince pies this weekend.
Waitrose: nice buttery pastry, enough filling but it’s very smooth, not alcoholic or spicy. Perfect with a cup of tea in the afternoon or for children.
Aldi: one of my favourites, the ratio of pastry, filling and almonds on top is just perfect, look and taste very good.
Also tried Baileys Original (just in case) - all good and nothing changed. I will repeat and report again next weekend.

😆 Thank you and come back next week - you’re doing a sterling job!

Unforgettablefire · 10/10/2022 20:06

I don't like mince pies, Christmas pudding, wedding cake or anything else that has fruit in it.
Chocolate log for me. Anyone know who does a nice rich sickly one please?

Yes, yes and thrice yes.

Had an M&A voucher, so got two tins last month. Have had to ask DH to hide the remaining tin. It's too, too good.

But, I need to know more around the Tesco one...

Crispynoodle · 10/10/2022 21:47

Who does the best chocolate log?

Let me know when you find it Grin

BreadAndJam00 · 11/10/2022 10:46

We were bought this last year and it was gorgeous! Best 'treat' Christmas food we had.

Ilovecaviar · 11/10/2022 11:16

I tried the deep filled asda ones with the crumble topping. They were too boozy unfortunately and I like boozy.

greggs are still the top one for me, followed closely by sainsburys own bakery.

In the run up to Christmas?! Have I missed November?

I’m glad you enjoyed the mince pies 🥧

Mince pies would go nice with a saucer of milk for you.

The big Mint Crisp Dairy Milk - Christmas wrapping, think it's 300 grams - we ate it in a couple of nights Grin

Sainsbury’s for me

uncomfortablydumb53 · 11/10/2022 14:16

For Yule log
Asda 'extra special' is gorgeous
It's gone up this year to £4.50.. still worth the price
I've resisted so far as I ate 3 in November last year!

Moomoo2o22 · 11/10/2022 17:19

JingsMahBucket · the home bargains one I mentioned is really soft it has no icing but is chocolate covered.

BaconAndAvocado · 11/10/2022 20:45

I heartily second the Asda Irish cream topped mince pies. Downright delectable.

Tesco mid-range mince pies......beautiful, buttery pastry and the plump, juicy fruit. It’s a thumbs up from me.

PoseyFlump · 11/10/2022 21:40

muchprefersummer · 10/10/2022 17:58

I haven't tried any Christmas food yet, however I have been through the chest freezer and cupboards and have meals plans for the next two weeks using all the old stuff thats past it's use by date nearing its use by date. This is in preparation for me then to restock on all things Christmassy! Still need to eat the Christmas pudding I got last year!

Do you find yourself lying about use by dates to you family?

"Is that old thing still in date?"

"Oh yeah, I'm sure it is" <hides packaging quickly in recycling bin>

Not dead yet! 😳😂

Floralnomad · 11/10/2022 21:54

Costco do the best mince pies , they hadn’t started them when I was last there . Failing that the M&S butter pastry ones ( red box) or the Tesco lattice ones from the fresh bakery section . I will say that I don’t like mine to taste of alcohol so my choices won’t be to everyone’s taste .

bashual · 11/10/2022 21:57

Looking for the Yule log that has the most yummy chocolate ganache in or on it, especially the end pieces. I don't like the ones that scrimp on this. Any recommendations anyone?
