When to do the supermarket shop?

Local M&S and Asda open at 6am tomorrow but is it too early to expect the veg, bread etc to last to Saturday? When are you doing your shop?

4AM Christmas eve at the 24 hr supermarket, then get OH to unpack and go back to bed.

Last year I did it because of covid but I was the only shopper the until an hour or so later, when I was checking out. Staff were super friendly, shelves were full. Was bliss!

I went to Morrisons today. Too early. They only had a couple of turkeys out. Lots of stuff expired on 24th. I bought long life stuff like cheese, stuffed peppers, drinks etc. All last until mid Jan.

I'm going to m&s on Wednesday so hopefully that will be better!

BarbaraofSeville · 20/12/2021 11:48

Christmas Dinner veg will be fine in the fridge from now until Saturday wherever you get it from Confused.

We always go at 6 am to Morrisons on the 23rd and got to M&S for a few bits on the way back. Never failed us yet, although I will be sending DP to the farm shop on Wednesday to get a turkey butterfly (single large turkey breast) and then if he can't get one, we can get something similar, or just a chicken during one of the supermarket shops. Some time between now and then, I'll be pulling out the spreadsheet to formulate a list so we have everything and don't need to go back to the shops again for a few days.

I have a Sainsburys order booked for 8am on 23rd but I'm dreading it being empty and we are low on shampoo and cereal anyway. I'm half thinking I should get up and go in the wee hours tomorrow and get everything I can and just have the order for the bits I couldn't get. I'd rather have it all than have to go out when it's really busy!

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 20/12/2021 12:02

We've got our Christmas Tesco delivery booked for tomorrow. We bought our turkey yesterday and it's in the freezer. I popped into Tesco at 9:30 this morning to pick up a few things that weren't available on Tesco delivery and it was madness in there. The size of some people's shopping trollies always amazes me lol. They must have massive families. Anyways that being said, a lot of the fresh stuff like stuffing balls etc still had best before dates of the 21-24th. We simply don't have enough room in our freezer for anything else (and we have a huge freezer). There are some bits like the fresh fruit and herbs that I will buy on the 23rd or 24th.

BiddyPop · 20/12/2021 12:26

I got a boned turkey breast on Saturday, it's vacuum sealed so good until 1st Jan.

We already have potatoes etc, and most of the non-perishables needed.

I need to get milk today anyway, so I plan to go at lunchtime. I don't need much more for this week so hopefully can get it all then. And a quick run to local convenience store later in the week for anything else.

Sn0tnose · 20/12/2021 12:39

We normally do ours on 23rd. DH works in a supermarket so if we’ve forgotten anything, he goes in half an hour early and grabs it before he starts work.

Sn0tnose · 20/12/2021 12:41

Forgot to say, our meat is pre ordered, our pigs and stuffing is made and in the freezer and all sweets, non fresh stuff and drinks are bought as soon as sell by dates allow, so it’s only fresh and chilled stuff we need to get on 23rd. Christmas Eve is for relaxing.

escapingthecity · 20/12/2021 12:42

23rd is the busiest grocery shopping day of the year. Just saying.
When I worked in a supermarket everything would be discounted from lunchtime on Christmas Eve - bit risky to wait until then but all the meat would be half price and I would pick up some bargains to put in the freezer.

BeyondOurReef · 20/12/2021 12:45

I’ve got a Sainsbury’s delivery on Wednesday. I’ll live with the substitutions. 🤣

I noticed while doing it that the basic veg is ludicrously cheap (mostly 19p Aldi price match) but anything vaguely interesting is really bloody expensive.

Lovemusic33 · 20/12/2021 12:46

Done mine, just need to pick up the Turkey and veg on Thursday. I don’t fancy being in a big supermarket at the end of the week.

blobby10 · 20/12/2021 12:57

I'm doing my Sainsburys shop tonight then kids (ha ha ha - they are all early 20s!) are doing the farm shop for fresh stuff on Thursday. Turkey being collected from butcher on Thursday too.

FrazzledY9Parent · 20/12/2021 12:59

I did mine this morning in case I come down with Covid this week - I wanted to have the food in just in case.

DrunkenKoala · 20/12/2021 13:42

Got a Sainsbury’s delivery the evening of the 22nd. Always book it for then and then nip into either Tesco or Sainsbury’s on Christmas Eve morning if anything is missing. Unfortunately DS had covid so don’t really want to go in store even with a negative LTF so keeping fingers crossed they’ve got everything. I’ve got most it’s just fruit, veg, salad, dairy and bread.

Justmuddlingalong · 20/12/2021 15:05

I know Tesco are advertising Christmas dinner veg for 19p a bag for clubcard holders, but Sainsbury's have their sprouts, carrots and parsnips for 19p a bag too. The ones I got are dated for the 27th.

It was all 20p in asda on Saturday. I suspect it’s 19p now. Aldi price match as far as the eye can see.
I8toys · 20/12/2021 15:58

Tesco delivery tomorrow and anything missing we'll pick up Wednesday. Been getting extras every week for months and got fresh things at the weekend with good dates.

LH1987 · 20/12/2021 16:04

@CoffeeRunner, I love that pork pie is on your list of three essential items including milk and veg. Grin

I think we would get on!

AnnaSW1 · 20/12/2021 18:20

I always go for 23rd

GarnishedOwl · 20/12/2021 20:51

@Anaximedes have you really frozen coleslaw and potato salad?! How does it come back?

Frazzled2207 · 20/12/2021 20:54

Judging by how busy it was in tesco and m&s football, today was the day for all of Cheshire.

Frazzled2207 · 20/12/2021 20:54

Foodhall not footballSmile

Stuckandinamess · 20/12/2021 21:03

Planning to do mine on Wednesday morning which is my next day off. I have just got home from a retail park near me (had to buy a card and leaving present for someone leaving work tomorrow) and it was shockingly busy! Huge queue in Boots and Asda was packed out like a Saturday afternoon, piled up trollies and more big queues. I honestly thought it wouldn't be that bad at this time of evening. Sitting in traffic I did wonder if I had missed a big Boris announcement that we were going into lockdown at midnight or something....

greatape · 20/12/2021 21:03

We have frozen quite a bit this year and I'm quite cba as well.

We are going to get veg tomorrow plus cheese and cream (if dates long enough but I picked some up for cooking on Saturday and it was dated to 26th).

Then meat will be picked up on 24th with sausages and bacon from butchers. We'll get any extra milk then from the Spa.

ThatsMySantaHisBeardIsSoFluffy · 20/12/2021 21:32

We have our usual Tuesday Sainsbury's delivery tomorrow morning, with a few added Christmas bits in it. Anything missing / top up milk etc will be picked up either in Booths or Sainsbury's on Friday when I pick up the pre-ordered food.
