Christmas TV Guides. Do you get one and which one?

🤔 I was surprised to see that the Co-op already has the Christmas edition of the Radio Times. I didn’t buy it. A bit too early for me.
I NEVER buy a TV guide except for Christmas and then sit and mark out what I want to watch.
So TV guides for Christmas, yes, no and which one?

I usually buy the Radio Times at Christmas because it's part of the build up to Xmas. However last year I bought it and I don't think we even looked at it so not sure I'll bother this year. I have a feeling it was a fiver or thereabouts too which is a colossal waste of money for something that will end up in the recycling bin!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 05/12/2021 16:48

I get the TV Times and sit down with highlighter pen (we have one each to mark things Xmas Grin )

I like to turn to the 25th and try to guess The Big Film on BBC1

Then go through and think "Why the blazes have they got Hop/Nightmare on Elm Street / Cliff Richards Summer Holiday/ insert programme of choice on ^at bloody Christmas" ?

Lipsandlashes · 05/12/2021 16:51

Always the Radio Times. It’s an absolute Christmas tradition for me. I don’t buy a TV guide at any other time of year though.

the80sweregreat · 05/12/2021 16:55

They said that the programme line up this year on bbc one is almost the same as last year
To think, I could have just saved last years to mag and saved a few pounds !!
😂

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 05/12/2021 17:01

Bond Film
Eastenders - Philth says this'll be the best Christmas ever someone will die/there will be an explosion/someone will give birth
The Snowman obvs Xmas Grin
Some shit from the 80s to celebrate the memory of whatever actor we have lost this year

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 05/12/2021 17:04

I normally get a Radio Times.

There's nothing better for picking out the programmes you want to forget to watch over Christmas Xmas Wink.

the80sweregreat · 05/12/2021 17:12

Channel five normally do a countdown of 'the best Christmas songs ever '!!
It goes on for many hours and usually fairytale of New York is generally number one.
C list celebs have a chat about ' last Christmas'and how nobody realized that George Michael was gay and we see Shakin Steven's in a Christmas jumper

Oh, goodness - there'll be 'Top 100s' of everything on over Christmas.
Wooky8 · 05/12/2021 17:21

Yes, total tradition. Last year ended up having to buy whatever was left in the shop. Also end up with some things remaining unwatched on our recorded programmes. That's young children for you! Will still buy this year though!

MrsTophamHat · 05/12/2021 17:23

Radio Times has been a personal tradition of mine since I worked in Woolworths as a teenager. Nobody else in my family cares, and I often don't remember to watch a lot of stuff now that we have so much on streaming but i love looking through it.

the80sweregreat · 05/12/2021 17:25

Top ten best ' lockdowns ' will be on for New Years.
(the tiers will be mentioned as ' lockdown ' lite )
Plus interviews with c list celebs and how they overcome the lockdowns by baking banana bread and making new music with the kids in their studios.

pinkksugarmouse · 05/12/2021 17:36

@maofteens

No, never have. I didn't grow up in the UK though so maybe it's some sort of tradition here!
Yes it certainly seems to be. I thought I was a bit odd getting one only at Christmas and sitting down with a cup of tea doing my circling. Making it a bit of a Christmas tradition. Clearly I’m not alone. 😁🎄 I don’t even watch much TV but there’s always something and I look for things for my husband and daughter too because they aren’t interested in reading it themselves.

Got my What’s on TV today. At £1.50 it’s much easier to justify the cost than with its rivals but I think some people clearly have a favourite.

ITV never bother at Christmas time.
Just old films or maybe a drama.
The bbc rely on Eastenders to cheer us all up ( with a festive murder or birth ) and repeats of the Royal family and call the midwife.
Four go for the alternative Christmas message and maybe a ' Kylie ' gig from the 90s
Channel five show ' Oliver ' on a loop
Or ' a Christmas carol '

BaconAndAvocado · 05/12/2021 19:19

I've always bought the Christmas Radio Times but last year felt a bit disappointed with it so not sure if I'll get it this year. I probably will

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 05/12/2021 20:07

ITV never bother at Christmas time

Wait up , we'll have a The Chase Celebrity Special where The Chasers will humiliate themselves by dressing up , we'll all think Who the heck are you when we're introduced the the Celebrity Panel and Bradders I'm on Everything , Me will lose it big time ( Ive seen it live , he either pisses himself laughing or gets sweary ! )

.

Userevermore · 05/12/2021 20:15

We have the Radio Times, we get it every week anyway as DH likes to have it, he doesn't like the guide on the TV, it's like the olden days in our house.

the80sweregreat · 07/12/2021 06:53

I don't like the planner on my old freeview box
It's far easier to flick to each page in my tv mag.
Long may they continue to be in print!

Groovytiger · 07/12/2021 07:28

Couldn't believe it when I saw the Radio Times was priced at £5.99. Hadn't realised the price of magazines had increased so much.

the80sweregreat · 07/12/2021 12:34

What's on tv has gone up by 2p !
It now says ' only 77p' !
It was ' only ' 75 p the other week.
Blooming cheek
And my local supermarket has moved all the mags over the back miles away as well following a refurb
Why do they do this ?? 😂

weleasewoderick23 · 07/12/2021 12:44

I can remember my parents buying the radio time and tv times at Christmas in the 1970's. They always said Christmas tv is crap this year!

Another Christmas tradition!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 07/12/2021 15:06

Is the TV Times out yet?
I was in a big Sainsbury today , they only had the regular weekly one Xmas Hmm

AbstractDot · 07/12/2021 20:51

What's On TV for me as its what I grew up with! I remember when it was 'only 45p' each week!

Christmas TV Guides. Do you get one and which one?
MostUseful · 07/12/2021 22:48

Got my Christmas Radio Times today. The TV offerings this year are absolutely abysmal, for example: Christmas Day, BBC2, 5.20pm - The Adventures of Robin Hood - made in 1938. Really? That's the best they can do?

Timeisavirtue · 07/12/2021 23:19

Sore subject at the moment....
Waited days for the radio times Christmas special to come out today only to find out there’s been an distribution issue and no one in a 3 mile radius has recieved it... 🤨

seriousandloyal · 07/12/2021 23:23

Always get the Radio Times
