Christmas breakfast(s)

Any suggestions for more savoury/less rich breakfasts over the Xmas period? We usually don't bother and just have toast or weetabix as normal but sometimes it's nice to have something different. Can't face anything too sweet or rich as breakfast will be around 9-10 and lunch around 3 so it's not like we need a full fry up...

Same as the other 364 days, but we get stuck into the prosecco after the dogs have been walked, about 11.30, then glide into smoked salmon on buttered wholemeal bread, with lemon and black pepper, main event about 5.00.

Squirrelblanket · 28/11/2021 09:36

We have croissants with bacon.

Helpimfalling · 28/11/2021 09:36

Salmon Bellinis I think there called.

Like a salmon cream cheese on a little pancake type thing.

Helpimfalling · 28/11/2021 09:36

@Minceandonions

We do blinis (shop bought) with shreds of smoked salmon and a little blob of creme freich with lemon and dill. It's very fresh and light tasting, but feels special. We serve 4 per person, but you could also just do a big sharing platter of them.
Exactly this

This doesn't fit your bill but we usually have variants of pancakes and waffles for Christmas breakfasts. The Smitten Kitchen blog has recipes for both eggnog and gingerbread waffles for extra festive vibe

lupad · 28/11/2021 09:44

Christmas morning we just have bagels, salmon & cream cheese & croissants. Keep it eat. Boxing day is a fry up

ShabsLovesTiff · 28/11/2021 09:50

Breakfast in the family home is if we bother having one is normally a bacon sandwich and a cuppa.

But sometimes don’t bother as the night before was a late night prepping vegetables and getting the meat in oven to slow cook overnight no room in kitchen for pots and pans and don’t wanna make dishes when we should be watching kids open pressies and relaxing not cooking and doing dishes.

Bacon sandwich is a treat if you were on drink night before tho and you need something to eat an a cuppa to feel human again lol.. plus we have a late dinner so some of the older kids like to have there bacon sandwiches in the morning.

I know what you mean about sweet stuff all the kids empty their stockings and fill their faces full of sweets and chocolate put their stockings and makes me feel sick looking at how much is in them lol.

Not posh or from money and don’t like salmon and croissants etc but if that’s your thing and you’ve all this extra time in the morning and don’t mind the cooking and dishes then go for it.

Each to their own Grin

English muffins, smoked salmon and scrambled eggs made with cream. Plus citrus fruit salad with maple, lime and ginger dressing.

Relatively light but also still special.

SmallProvincial · 28/11/2021 10:06

Normally we have cinnamon buns, or smoked salmon and scrambled eggs on toast.

This year we're having bacon sandwiches and a fruit platter.

SmallProvincial · 28/11/2021 10:06

Love the idea of a maple, lime and ginger dressing my my fruit platter @oldnews - I'll do that!

5thnonblonde · 28/11/2021 10:07

@Oldnews do you have a recipe for your fruit salad?

Bluntness100 · 28/11/2021 10:10

We also do smoked salmon and scrambled eggs with croissants and champagne, we also do cinammon rolls etc which is obvs sweet.😂

I think having a nice Xmas breakfast is important, and you don’t need to eat much.

Palavah · 28/11/2021 10:10

@Helpimfalling

Blinis. A bellini is a cocktail that mixes champagne with peach juice. It would be gr im with salmon :)
WeeFae · 28/11/2021 10:11

We have bagels with pate or cream cheese with a nice fruit juice.

Blackmagicqueen · 28/11/2021 10:13

This year we have gotten a selection of frozen uncooked Croissants, pastries you put in the oven to have with coffee and fresh juice. Its nice that there is an option everyone including dc! I think they'd be too excited to eat a normal breakfast!

Sauvignonandlemonade · 28/11/2021 10:18

Smoked salmon and scrambled eggs! I make the eggs with double cream and fresh chives. Served with the best crusty wholemeal bread I can find, posh butter and a mimosa. I look forward to that more than the main event!

GiltEdges · 28/11/2021 10:22

Bacon and cheese croissants are our classic Christmas breakfast ☺️

Oldnews · 28/11/2021 10:24

@5thnonblonde a cup of maple syrup, plus a cup of fresh squeezed lime and orange juice. Put in a pot with a big chunk of ginger, zest of lime and a little bit of grapefruit and clementine zest. Bring to boil and then let it simmer for 5 mins. Remove ginger and pour over fruit (I do pink grapefruit, orange and cherries). I let it marinade overnight, any leftover juice gets poured into my bucks fizz :)

So simple, but such a treat too!

goose1964 · 28/11/2021 10:25

We have smoked salmon and scrambled eggs

5thnonblonde · 28/11/2021 10:26

@Oldnews that sounds delicious! Thanks!

mrsm43s · 28/11/2021 10:59

We tend to do Eggs Benedict or Eggs Royale with Bucks Fizz.

Children, who are older teens and usually eat like normal adults, revert back to being little kids and eat pain au chocolate and christmas stocking sweets washed down with hot chocolate.

HalloHello · 28/11/2021 18:11

'Not posh or from money and don’t like salmon and croissants etc but if that’s your thing and you’ve all this extra time in the morning and don’t mind the cooking and dishes then go for it.'

Hardly takes any dishes to eat a croissant! And I wouldn't say they were posh 🤣🤣

Havehope21 · 28/11/2021 18:34

smoked salmon and cream cheese bagels
smoked salmon and scrambled eggs with crumpets / muffins
poached eggs with muffins - could go eggs royale / hollandaise style

bake from frozen croissants are also a good idea (much better than the ready baked ones from most supermarkets as you can get them in advance and have them hot). You can choose sweet or savoury fillings - brie and ham works well or brie and cranberry sauce if you want a veggie option (do it so the brie melts and it is delicious.

You could also buy the jus rol ones and do them like this www.jusrol.co.uk/pastry-recipes/croque-monsieur-parcels (there are lots of recipes on the jus rol website too).

I know you said no to sweet options - but if anyone did want a sweeter version, you could buy the frozen patisserie bags which have pain au chocolat and cinnamon whirls too and serve them with fruit salad (you could also do chocolate filled croissants).

MeatyRvita · 28/11/2021 18:39

We have either homemade sausage mcmuffins, or bacon sandwiches but we don’t tend to eat our main meal until 5/6ish

didireallysaythat · 28/11/2021 19:49

One kid doesn't eat eggs and breakfast is not ally over in 5 mins so I always feel like it's a waste if time over engineering it. Maybe I should just aim for a cup of tea and then cook pigs in blankets for brunch ... 😁
