Would I regret putting my tree up now?

Feeling a bit low due to the dark weather, and wondering if putting up the tree will brighten up the next few weeks a bit.

We have family visiting soon who probably would like the tree.

But, we also have a 9 year old, 2 year old and baby. Will the 9 year old feel sick of tree by xmas? Will the 2 year old break all the baubles? Will I live to regret putting it up so early?

I normally wait until early December.

I love Christmas and I never put my tree up before the 15th of December. Then I keep it up until New Year. If you put it up now and take it down on Boxing Day that’s a long, drab time until spring!

gettingolderandgrumpy · 15/11/2021 19:48

If it makes you happy then do it but for me I really look forward to putting it up early December. I start with the tree and put Christmas music in watch films , I don’t think I could do it in November it’s too early and feels like weeks away before it’s actually Christmas.
Also just because you’ve put the tree up doesn’t mean it’s Christmas.

InFiveMins · 15/11/2021 19:50

I actually don't think it's too early to put the tree up. It seems such a hassle to get out all the decorations just for a few weeks before having to take them all down again!

I can't do it this year but next year think I'm going to start putting them up mid November for that very reason.

Roselilly36 · 15/11/2021 19:54

I put my tree up now, earlier than when my two were little, as they would expect Christmas Day to be the next day! I usually put my tree up, first weekend in December now.

Sn0tnose · 15/11/2021 19:56

DH bought ours home today (We’re having a 4’ tree this year as we’re away for a lot of December so not worth the day it takes to put ours up and decorate it) and I must admit, I was tempted for a minute. A lack of tinsel and lametta was the only thing that stopped me.

I’ve got a massive glass jar that’s about a foot tall, so I’ve put fairy lights in that instead, just to tide me over until December.

Cotswoldmama · 15/11/2021 19:57

We put ours up at the weekend after watching Elf! The build up and excitement is the best part of Christmas for me! I do take it all down on boxing Day though!

But Boxing Day is Christmas!! . It doesn’t end when you go to bed Christmas Day night .
TheLovelinessOfDemons · 15/11/2021 20:01

@PieMistee

It's ridiculously early. The 9 year old will have a verrrrry long wait if you let them think it's nearly Xmas.
A 9 year old should be aware that it's not nearly Christmas. They should be perfectly aware of the date.

@KurtWilde

So am I the only one here who's already put theirs up?
Nope. Have had mine up for over a week. Have all (But 2!) presents wrapped under the tree too. Xmas Smile I live alone though and don't have any kids of my own but my nieces come round and disapprove heavily. Xmas Grin
ohtwatbollocks · 15/11/2021 20:11

Mine is up 😅 it's okay if it's too early for others but I'm happy with it up and my kids know Christmas isn't for a while yet. We watched the first Harry Potter, wore some pjs and had some popcorn with the twinkly lights on, it was lovely!

This sounds ace! We wore Xmas pjs, mince pies and Now! That's what I call Christmas on YouTube
mmmmmchocolate · 15/11/2021 20:25

I’ve not put the tree up yet because it will end up looking messy and that will annoy me 😂 I have started to sneak out some of the decorations and light up houses etc. Do what makes you happy if you have the space for it not to be in the way!

tillytoodles1 · 15/11/2021 20:26

I dont have any Christmas decorations up at all, miserable cow that I am. Only joking, but I spend Christmas Eve and the day itself with my daughter and her family, then I go home on Boxing Day for a while, then I go to see my son's family all day. By the time i get home im ready for bed so Im not there to appreciatè them.

breadrollz · 15/11/2021 20:28

I love christmas & think if you want to put it up now to cheer you up it's not necessarily a bad thing however I don't understand the taking it down on boxing day thing. To me that's the christmas holidays.

Agree.

I wish people kept their trees up until well into January, it's such a dismal month and I'd love to see all the decorations in windows for the traditional 12 days at the very least. But I think I'm the minority, most of my friends get rid of their trees / decorations as soon as C Day is over Sad

breadrollz · 15/11/2021 20:44

where I am it's the norm to take them down in January, the council only starts collecting them for recycling from early Jan.

On the sad day when I have to go back to work & take the kids back to school I get a small thrill about seeing all the trees outside & remembering the lovely holiday.

Redkatagain · 15/11/2021 20:44

I am getting round the darkness by drinking last year's snow globe gin and eating the remaining (recently rediscovered) Xmas 2020 posh chocolate.
This and admiring the new fairy lights, currently in a vase on the coffee table while I decide whether I prefer them or the old ones.
I find the autumn nights much improved.

BirdyBirdyTweetTweet · 15/11/2021 20:55

Ours is up🎄

TheChosenTwo · 15/11/2021 21:10

About a month too early for me!
We get a real one, booked in to get one on Sunday 12th. It will be down on the 26th as we go on holiday every year and come back the day before we go back to work and school and there’s no way I want to be coming into a dead stick and have to de-Christmas then so it comes down on Boxing Day.
That’s about 2 weeks, perfect amount of time to be excited and have the Christmas things about before they go away and my house can be returned to its normal state. I loathe the clutter and general ‘messiness’ that the Christmas crap brings although I do love it for a short amount of time!!
Do what makes you happy, you have to live with it, not us

hopeishere · 15/11/2021 21:15

Too early. Christmas is nice but it's not the be all and end all. Try and find some other things to brighten your life.

tigger1001 · 15/11/2021 21:35

It's far too early for me. I love my tree but by Christmas I'm ready to get my living room back. I usually take it down before new year, depending when I'm back at work. January is manic at work so like to have my house all clean and batch cooking done ready for the January madness

gettingolderandgrumpy · 15/11/2021 22:34

Agreed to me waiting for Christmas weeks before then taking down on Boxing Day is just as miserable. It’s because you’ve put it up too early so you can’t wait for Christmas to be over before it’s actually begun properly. Enjoy Christmas at Christmas time in the meantime just plan it get the shopping etc .
maofteens · 15/11/2021 23:19

You will be sick of the sight of it by Xmas. Wait until Dec 1. I put ours up first weekend in December and then quite happy to take it down January 1, though sometimes wait til 12th night.
I agree the run up to Christmas is more exciting than the dull days after, but it is still too early.

KurtWilde · 15/11/2021 23:53

Pleased someone has posted a tree pic Grin not that I was fishing for tree pics or anything (maybe a bit)!

I have done all my Christmas shopping, so tidying, lights and wrapping it is.

We tend to take our tree down earlyish as after the manic Christmas day I normally want a bit of calm and normality. But perhaps this year I will leave it up for the 12 days.
