I've just bought an apple and cinnamon gin. I am considering a bottle of Amaretto but neither me or dh like coke as a mixer so not sure. Cremant is purchased for Christmas lunch/evening.

Winter is coming - what'll you have to drink?

Also, if anyone is looking for alcohol free festive tipples, I noticed in lidl today they had alcohol free mulled punch and a flavoured alcohol-free gin, can't remember the flavour but it was something seasonal.

Oh I always drink Amaretto neat or over ice, I'd never put coke in it.

Baileys from Dec 1 as is tradition (if I drank it all year I'd be the size of a house). I'm making cranberry gin later. And I usually have Glayva or Drambuie kicking around.

Hetyanni · 14/11/2021 14:01

Oh I thought it was more of a spirit. Interesting. I do love almond flavour...

Can't get on with Bailey's unless it's in hot chocolate, I know I am in the minority there when it comes to festive booze!

ParkheadParadise · 14/11/2021 14:04

I'll have a brandy n coke in a tall glass, house measures, please.
🍷🍷🍷
DH will have a whisky n lemonade.

I bought several bottles of Gin from M&S that looked Christmassy (2 of my sisters will drink that)
BOOZE is available all year round in our house. We always have a well-stocked booze cabinet 🍷🥂🍷🥂

wheresmymojo · 14/11/2021 14:05

Amaretto in hot chocolate is also yum...

wheresmymojo · 14/11/2021 14:06

...and try amaretto, some cherry juice (available in most supermarkets) topped up with Prosecco for a very lovely cherry bakewell fizz

CointreauVersial · 14/11/2021 14:07

Yes, Amaretto is lovely on the rocks, neat. Mmmm....

I just picked up a bottle of Hotel Chocolat Chocolate Cream for Christmas, after having a taster at Costco. It tastes like vodka and melted milk chocolate, and the DDs and I will be in heaven.

The other wnter drink I love is mulled wine, but unless I have people round I can't be bothered to prepare it the traditional way. There's a syrup you can buy which you add to red wine and stick it in the microwave by glass - perfect if you want just the one. Or I sometimes buy the ready-mixed stuff, but that's not as nice.

Thanks for the tip about Lidl....must pop in.

delilahbucket · 14/11/2021 14:08

We have Champagne on Christmas day and maybe a Bailey's. I have bought some glitter gin and will have that with prosecco as I got something similar in my Craft Gin Club box last year and it made me feel all festive. I have various wines, gins, rum and whisky for visitors or taking as gifts to other people's houses. I have a few none alcoholic options too like zero alcohol gins and fizz.

wheresmymojo · 14/11/2021 14:08

I go seriously old school at Christmas and tend to have things I'd never have at any other time of the year...

  • Advocaat
  • Sherry
  • Port
  • Tia Maria coffees

For one week over December I'm like an 80s throwback (and I'm not even 40 yet!)

poshme · 14/11/2021 14:35

Amaretto & Cointreau & cranberry juice is delicious-like a bakewell tart in a glass.

CointreauVersial · 14/11/2021 14:41

Ohhh, that sounds divine!

RosieRoww · 14/11/2021 14:46

I like mulled wine and Baileys.:)

Onionbhajisandwich · 14/11/2021 14:49

I don’t really drink but I like to have a bottle of baileys in for Christmas. I’ve pushed the boat out this year and bought a bottle of normal and a bottle of chocolate baileys Grin

MissyB1 · 14/11/2021 14:52

Kaluha is lovely, a sort of coffee liquer.
I also like Tia Maria.
We have Champagne on Xmas day, and I’m very partial to Advocaat.

OzziePopPop · 14/11/2021 15:08

Apple Jack Daniels with cloudy lemonade (the good stuff) - tastes like adult appletize!

LowlandLucky · 14/11/2021 15:14

A white wine to go with the fish on Christmas Eve, Arran Cream or Gluhwein after dinner. Cremant for the bucks fizz on Christmas morning, Piper Heidsieck just before lunch, Stags breath on NYE.

1forAll74 · 14/11/2021 15:17

Someone gifted me a bottle of Aldi's type Baileys last year, and it was quite good, very much like the proper Baileys, and also some lovely chocolates which were ace. I have never been to an Aldi store, not for any reason, except I am an oldie, and live alone, and just use a local co-op for most shoppping.

I love mulled wine too. Thinking of making it in the slow cooker this year.

Baileys in coffee instead of milk or cream. I used to like a bucks fizz but too much OJ does things to my digestion now so I have gone over to demi sec champagne. Sainsbury's for quaffing, Moet Nectar Imperial for posh....alternatively brut champers topped up with cranberry liqueur. Galliano is pretty nice neat over ice or make a harvey wallbanger (galliano vodka orange juice) I prefer the vanilla version to the original but wouldn't refuse either. Galliano also do THE BEST coffee liqueur called Ristretto, not easy to get hold of though. For cold nights, The King's Ginger liqueur or mulled wine. for a casual posh quaff I like Canadian Club, either the 12YO or the sherry cask with fever tree ginger ale (no sweeteners and not much sugar) If you like a quirk look for flavoured canadian whiskey, I have got maple, vanilla, caramel and apple, all good neat or with fever tree. I know people will go urgh but I do like a sweet sherry, PX for preference but I will slum it on Harveys

Where do I begin? We're not big drinkers during the year, but tend to hole up for a couple of weeks at Christmas, and have wine with meals and cocktails at odd hours. The friend we spend the holidays with loves a Bloody Mary with his breakfast, so there's that, then a couple of nice bottles of port to go with the massive cheese selection, riesling with the turkey, a full bodied red with the cake, and brandy for a nightcap. We have to have Bailey's because aforementioned friend likes a glass or two at Christmas - but I prefer Tesco's cheap version (Irish Cream), which doesn't taste much like Bailey's to be honest - more of an apple flavour, but it's good. For the cocktails there'll be spiced rum (Dark 'n Stormy), white rum (Mojito), Bacardi (Pina Colada), and this year I've also got a strawberry daquiri mix, so need to get some tequila. I might get some Bacardi Ginger if I see it - tried it last year and enjoyed it, also Jameson Cold Brew (coffee flavoured). We have a small bottle (well, 50cl) of Fireball - a cinnamon liqueur which I enjoy but no one else does, and a bottle of Stout Cask Jameson, 'cos DH likes it. Also 'ordinary' Jameson, for mixed drinks. Probably a litre or so of a basic vodka, too.

The only drink we never get is gin - none of us like it! There'll be beers (Guinness and Smithwicks) in the fridge for DH and friend, and also whatever DH gets given by grateful work colleagues etc.

I've got 6 small bottles of Prosecco for toasts and NYE - none of us are keen on it, so small bottles work better for us. I'm expecting a small pension payout before Christmas, so if that arrives I'll also get some St Germain and some interesting bitters for cocktail making :)

I'm not expecting all of this to vanish in the two week holiday period - I might have two drinks a day, DH and friend a bit more - last year we didn't need to buy anything further until around May!

Photo attached of last year's selection/hoard - none of us have a drink problem, honest (I usually have a few glasses of wine every 2 or 3 weeks) - it's just that we are all child-free and enjoy indulging ourselves - can't wait!

BOOZE!
Gingersay · 14/11/2021 16:00

Marks does a vegan coconut version of baileys which is just amazing.
I like a wee Baileys on Christmas eve, tesco has bottles of Baileys for £7.50 until tomorrow, I stuck a couple of bottles in this week's shop.
