In the spirit of helping others prevent the same mistakes... what is the worst Christmas present you ever received?

Mines has to be the sculpted hand photo frame I received one year... that looked like someone's decapitated hand that held a photo for you in its palm Blush

A small tin of lip balm. Wrapped, from sibling.
Seaweed sheets, from now ex.
Old Teddy with milk throw up stains on, from a friend to give to my baby Hmm

ArtMill2010 · 13/11/2021 19:24

I got a ‘Countdown to the year 2000’ alarm clock.....

..... For Christmas 2000. :)

Pipsquiggle · 13/11/2021 19:25

About 15 years ago, my mum and dad asked what I'd like for Christmas.

I asked for an ipod mini.
I got a sewing machine

h1nch · 13/11/2021 19:26

A 200g cheddar cheese truckle from my boyfriends mum - i think it was part of a multipack she bought at the supermarket but I only got the one generic truckle.

TidyOmlette · 13/11/2021 19:30

Scented drawer liners from my now MIL when I was 21.

Strangeways19 · 13/11/2021 19:31

A washing machine. I know it was the thought that counts but honestly, a washing machine!

I do remember getting it badly wrong with one of my children, I got them some plant stuff, to grow with the seeds etc I could tell it was a disappointment!

Ddot · 13/11/2021 19:33

Empty bottle no lid,
no joke

Linnty · 13/11/2021 19:33

A wooden toilet seat. The old one had cracked and kept pinching me when I stood up (it did it to the kids and him too) but rather than exH replacing as normal, thought it would be a good joke for my Xmas present.

DreamTheMoors · 13/11/2021 19:33

My now deceased MIL was very sweet and very naïve. One Christmas she gave me an extra-long white tee-shirt that had a huge, red HO on the front printed on it. Very Christmasy.
My in-laws never let me live it down. 😂😂😂

Jericha · 13/11/2021 19:35

Anti aging cream from my MIL when I was around 26

Make your own wine kit when I was six months pregnant (husband)

3 x impossible puzzles plus a dvd family trivia game for my "time off" (husband, 3 week old baby)

I write a list now

Carrotpuree · 13/11/2021 19:37

A pack of 3 Popsocks, from the in laws. They were from Waitrose though….

pollyglot · 13/11/2021 19:38

Not me, but DM to DD. DD was aged 6, loved pretty dresses. DM gave her the cheapest possible, vomit-inducing-pink cotton knit dress that was obviously too small. She said as she gave it to her - "It's probably too small, but that's fine, because (cousin's daughter) can wear it." So DD opened the parcel, the dress was whipped off her, rewrapped and given to cousin's daughter later in the day. The gift that keeps on giving/being given. A poverty-stricken pensioner? Nah, DM was a multi-millionaire.

pollyglot
That's so mean

Socksey · 13/11/2021 19:45

While I know the thought counts etc....
I could see exactly what I was thought of with a set of vintage plated silver forks with all the silver off.... apparently they knew I liked old stuff and would get them resilvered.... I don't have money to do that with... it was tat they got in an auction and thought it was better than it was so decided they didn't want the cost and gave it away...

Davygran · 13/11/2021 19:45

The year my husband got a very expensive bottle of rum, a coat & some books he’d asked for from his parents, I got a tapestry spectacles case from a charity shop (still with charity shop price underneath) and a BRIGHT green plastic plant holder that had an electronic “tune” whenever it needed watering.
Both my presents went straight in the bin.

Socksey · 13/11/2021 19:46

They realised it wasn't great after they bought it so didn't want to keep it

Fluffmum · 13/11/2021 19:46

A box of fairy washing powder

Ddot · 13/11/2021 19:48

1980s jellymould with fruit painted on top. Same friend who gave empty bottle.🤣 I have a traditional now, myself and partner open her gift Christmas eve for a good laugh.

kateluvscats · 13/11/2021 19:48

@Capferret

2 years ago my dm took an M&S gift card from her handbag on Christmas morning, handed it to me with ‘your cousin sent me this, not sure how much money is on it. Didn’t have time to shop.’ I have access to my dm’s email account as I organise travel for her to family. My siblings expensive and thoughtful gifts were all confirmed by email from John Lewis. Last Christmas I didn’t get a worse gift because I got nothing!
This is very sad, I hope other family members treat you well at Christmas.

This beauty from MIL

What is the worst Christmas present you ever received?
ChristmasHumbuggery · 13/11/2021 19:53

Polar bear salt n pepper shakers
Patterned Christmas socks with pom-poms on them that even someone from a Sami tribe would think was OTT
A Slazenger headband and matching wristbands
A souvenir pen from Austraila

All from the same person.

ChristmasHumbuggery · 13/11/2021 19:56

Katgeluvcats

I feel your pain. Every year I tell my parents what to buy my SIL who is the same age as me for Christmas e.g. Mac makeup, OPI latest colour, body lotion etc. She always loves her gifts. You'd think they would get 2, one for me?

But no....see above list Confused

NigelsNipple · 13/11/2021 19:56

Oooh so many, all from the in laws. I got a calender once. One of those given free by shops with adverts throughout. I think his mum forgot about me and just grabbed it! Father in law is superb for this. His best one for me was iron on name tags for clothes. He got my daughter a kitchen towel roll because it had the snowman on it, then requested to use it with his Christmas Dinner. Excellent!

Hetyanni · 13/11/2021 19:57

When me and DH had been together just under a year, our first Christmas together, his nan bought me an initial keyring.

Except it wasn't my initial - it was his ex-girlfriend's!

UnaLength · 13/11/2021 20:00

Heated rollers for the girl who had poker straight hair...from boyfriend first Christmas we were together because he fancied girls with curly hair!
