In the spirit of helping others prevent the same mistakes... what is the worst Christmas present you ever received?

Mines has to be the sculpted hand photo frame I received one year... that looked like someone's decapitated hand that held a photo for you in its palm Blush

Three dead rats that my dad found in a bin.

I know it sounds bad... basically the science department in his school were having a clear out, and he found them (foetuses in various stages of development, encased in perspex), brought then home and wrapped then for me 'because I liked science'. I was doing a physics degree.... Grin

My Mother-in-Law gave me a candle snuffer one year.

Newdad19 · 12/11/2021 18:46

Another blanket.

DB got me one about five years again. Really nice. Loved it and I said so.

Every year since a blooming blanket. Not even as nice!

Oh god I can feel the embarrassment rear it’s ugly head as write this. I’m a very simple dresser, usually jeans and a jumper, wax jacket or similar, no colours, no fun and definitely no glamour to my style.

One year my brother and sister in law were so excited to give me my gift as it was perfect apparently. I opened the present to be face with a leopard print, fake fur embellished with diamanté’s and a rose gold big zip fur collar for a coat, they thought it was perfect as I like walking and take the dog up the cliffs regularly when it’s freezing, they thought it would keep me warm. Well I just couldn’t stop laughing, picturing myself in this taking the dog for a walk, I was crying laughing trying to stop myself. I felt awful but trying to make myself stop just made me laugh more. They looked so annoyed and I don’t blame them but what on earth were they thinking. After laughing uncontrollably for what felt like an hour my SIL declares it’s very expensive by a famous designer, which started me off all over again.

It was one of those gift where you think ‘have they even met me’ .

I think this is the winner...

An obvious regift from a friend years ago which would be fine if unused...Body shop shower gel which had been used then topped up with water (it was watery and all bubbly at the top) plus the usual accompanying shower puff and moisturiser which I also feared may have been used but less obvious if so, they all went in the bin.

tiredanddangerous · 12/11/2021 18:57

I'm another one who was given scented drawer liners as a teenager by my Nan, god love her.

Dead rats wins by a mile though.

Many years ago exH bought me a beautiful personalised artisan leather makeup bag. Only problem was it was personalised with the OW's name. The one he gave her was personalised with my name.

I can laugh about it now but I've had better Christmas mornings Xmas Grin

Wow! This really is the worst story ever. Is that how you found out about the OW? What a spectacularly horrible moment!
Gingerkittykat · 12/11/2021 19:02

A fruit bowl in the shape of a cat.

My friend went on about how it was expensive and hand carved from a local artist so I can't get rid of it.

It freaked me out, it has spookily painted eyes that gave me the fright of my life when I got up during the night and saw those eyes staring at me.

It is now hidden in a cupboard and only surfaces when this person visits.

iklboo · 12/11/2021 19:04

Another FIL / wife one. Gave DH a hand cream set as he gets quite bad eczema. It smelled lovely and worked well so we looked up where we could buy some more. It had been discontinued about 7 years ago.

CiaoForDiNiaoSaur · 12/11/2021 19:05

It's a toss up between

the year my auntie bought me socks (my brothers got mini tin can alley type things). I was gutted.

And the year DS1 was born. He was 4 months old at Christmas and my (now ex) in laws bought me the Paul McKenna "I can make you thin" book. I was back in my size 12 jeans already. Bastards.

Grida · 12/11/2021 19:08

A partially used colouring book with someone else’s name written in the front.

ohtwatbollocks · 12/11/2021 19:09

A picture of my cousin, I was 13, my cousin was about 40 at the time 😅 it was random

weleasewoderick23 · 12/11/2021 19:09

A scalextric set from an ex when I was about 19, it ended up in the loft
I really wanted a golden retriever 🤦🏼‍♀️

Tightwad2020 · 12/11/2021 19:09

My first, now late husband gave me a colander for Christmas. I used to make an effort for him, and I really wish I hadn't bothered, the arsehole.

My uncle gave my mother. a packet of tea towels for her 70th birthday, though, so I don't think I win the insulting, thoughtless, crap gift prize.

I have a wonderful husband now who gives me generous and thoughtful gifts, year round.

Tops even Love Actually. How awful, you couldn’t make it up.

A size 22 knitted sweater vest from a relative. I was a size 8-10 at the time but they never used to miss an opportunity to point out how overweight I was Hmm

SockFluffInTheBath · 12/11/2021 19:12

When DC were tiny and we were really skint DH spent £25 on a Green & Blacks hot chocolate & mugs set. I’ve never been able to drink hot chocolate, it makes me rowf spectacularly (he’d witnessed this so he did know) but it was on a big Tinseltown display in Debenhams so that meant it had to be my one and only gift that year.

Ermmmmname · 12/11/2021 19:12

There’s a tie for worst with mine and they’re both secret Santa’s. First was in school and the boy I had a crush on was my secret Santa and he got me some almost past their sell by date lemon after eights.
The other one was a work one and after watching everyone open lovely thoughtful presents, I opened mine to find one of those magnetic wig toy things but it was lady parts.

Clareypoo · 12/11/2021 19:12

Three pound coins sellotaped to the inside of an Xmas card.
(From a great aunt)
I was 32 at the time.

liliainterfrutices · 12/11/2021 19:16

A dressing gown belt.

gingergiraffe · 12/11/2021 19:16

My grown up kids have never forgotten the year one of them, as a child, was given a wild bird seed ball from their great aunt and uncle. We actually cry with laughter about it now. Talk about disappointing.

FazeleysRoyale · 12/11/2021 19:21

Mine were both Secret Santa from work colleagues.

A nasty polyester blanket that crackled with little sparks whenever you touched it. This was to snuggle with my DC ( I'd rather not give them a static shock but giver's heart was probably in the right place).

A bottle of glitter shower gel and a shower cap of the Alien from Toy Story. It was like a kid's present so thought I could pass on to DD but the shower cap was too small to fit even my DD's head. The giver had wrapped the items in a giant box which looked exciting. I was disappointed and flummoxed, thought I had the wrong present but he was so pleased with his "joke" present. It went to the charity shop. He then retired before I could get my own back next year.

moneyowed · 12/11/2021 19:23

I have been given by my parents

  1. Things that belong to me
  2. A mattress protector... to use on someone else's bed. Which already had a mattress protector.
  3. Perfume, which my mother wanted so she told me she would buy it for me and use it herself and that way she doesn't have to buy a separate present for me.

All took place in different years.

FazeleysRoyale · 12/11/2021 19:26

@Ermmmmname

Think your secret Santas were even worse than mine ( lady parts wig Grin)
