No room for a tree

We don't have room for a tree in the living room (we put the tree up in the kitchen/dining room) but we would like to decorate the living room and make it look and feel Christmassy. We don't have a fire place so no place for a garland either.
Any ideas on how we can decorate/what we can put up to give the room some Christmas cheer!!

Years ago my mum made a large wall decoration out of coloured paper to look like a fireplace. I loved it! I think she used real hooks somehow for our stockings.

Christmas cushions! I put Christmas covers on my scatter cushions. You have just reminded me to look them out! Ditto Christmas mugs, tealight holders and festive scented oil for the oil burner. The world's smallest poinsettia. Also a couple of wall hanging decorations (think The Range) - I take down a couple of pictures and hang them instead. You need to embrace the clutter, lol!

Have you got Pinterest? Search under Christmas decor for tiny homes. They have used wall space, hooks, picture frames and windows to decorate instead of a tree. Make it cosy with lots of fairy lights and blankets. I love this idea if you have wall space.

I see these on Facebook each year and they look great, I think

Do you have a side table? We used to put a small tree on a side table where we usually had a lamp. The lights on it meant it was basically a lamp still, just Christmasy

How about something like this? I think it's great if you like a rustic look and you don't need much wall space for it, can make it any size to suit your room themummyfront.com/twig-christmas-tree/

They might be stuck on shipping containers in the wrong part of the world, but there used to be corner/1/4 trees (admittedly plastic)

One year when I was living in a crappy little flat I decorated a big ugly lamp my ex gave me. It was almost as big as a tree 😬

We have a collection of festive pictures that come out every year, a canvas of my DDs is the first thing I put up each year.

FairFuming · 11/11/2021 22:18

Could you put garlands on windowsills or above doors?

Littlepigsmig · 11/11/2021 23:50

Thanks all! Some lovely ideas. We do have wall space so perhaps a 'tree' on a wall with lights would work.
Off to look at Pinterest and no doubt fall down a Christmas decor hole....

My friend has one of these felt advent calendars in her living room, it's really pretty & their kids love it.

We have a branch (picked up from the street after a windy night) hanging from the ceiling here (just got some hooks from Robert dyas and twisted them into the joist. I hang metal stars and lights off it. Continuing on the ceiling theme we also hang larger decorations on ribbons over any furniture that doesn't move (sideboards etc not sofas so you don't have people bumping into them). It also works well to put in a thin curtain rod just by your window (if they are recessed and your curtains are out of the way) and hang baubles from that too.

You can get wall hanging half trees. I used to have one for my first tiny house.

Put four 'cup-hooks' in the corners of the room and string fairy lights around the edge and across the room, and then add Christmas (red and green) bunting.

Good old fashioned paper chains or twisted crepe paper across the ceiling. Paper snowflakes at the window

Ylvamoon · 12/11/2021 09:06

Do you have patio doors? When my DC were younger, we used finger paint to draw a big Christmas Tree, Santa, Snowman .... for a bit of festive fun.
Its messy granted but also fun they will remember forever!

FireworkParrot · 12/11/2021 09:31

Fairy lights wherever you can put them and paper chains or bunting!

MrsSkylerWhite · 12/11/2021 09:32

I’ve seen half trees online that hang on the wall.

Madcats · 13/11/2021 10:20

I've just had an email from Bloom offering 1/2 price off everything (I think) with code 454BE

They have a 2 battery-lit tapestry tree wall hanging

They have some rather nice garlands etc.

DappyApple · 13/11/2021 11:30

Do you have a surface you could put a table top tree on?

We have a small green 2ft one and also two table top twig trees that look really good when you hang decorations on?

Have you got anything you could hang a Garland on, we have one on the fireplace but also one on the tv unit, which I’ve laced with fairy lights.
You could put one around the doorframe or any furniture you have.

I’ve previously hung baubles from of the ceiling on long thread/gift ribbon at different heights which is really effective.

Could you put fairy lights around the perimeter of your window (did this in our old house as no windowsills) or if you do have a windowsill decorate that.

Littlepigsmig · 13/11/2021 13:23

So many lovely ideas! Keep them coming. We do have a bookcase in the room we could put a garland on, I've also been browsing Etsy for fabric bunting.
Quite excited to decorate it now!!
