Tree topper alternative, help please

Hello all,

I need some help topping our tree, I have two (in theory) sort of fancy wire outline ones. But I always think the top of the tree is too skinny to hold them. I end up folding it down to double the width, and even then they invariably tip sideways.... I’ve had enough of that. What else could I put on the top of the tree? I’m really lacking in imagination for this one...

Thanks!

Are they too heavy? Could you maybe switch to an angel as they tend to be lighter and easier to keep straight on the top of tree?
I'm considering it this year too - I have a metal star that always starts straight but ends up leaning

We put an elf hat, it used to be one of my children’s but I think it looks quite festive and we aren’t religious so it’s a good alternative.

We have a small needlefelt troll that came from etsy. It wasn't made as a tree topper but works nicely. Any small soft toy could easily be fixed in place with a piece of floristry wire.

I put a largish silver snd white artificial flower on mine. It's very Christmassy and looks lovely. Got it in my local garden centre.

These are all great ideas, thank you!

Leaning towards elf hat or toy as the boys would love it. The flower does look lovely though. We had an angel when I was little and I always feel nostalgic about it, but I haven't seen an angel/fairy on a tree for years and didn't think I could get one Smile

Mayfair have both angels and fairies

elQuintoConyo · 23/09/2021 11:05

We're still using the loo roll angel DS made when he was 5 Grin

SirSamuelVimes · 23/09/2021 11:23

I have a snowy owl at the top of my tree. Not religious so it feels more appropriate for us.

It's meant to be a hanging decoration so I just twist the string round a few times.

minipie · 23/09/2021 11:25

Ha, I have one of those fancy wire outline ones and it is too heavy (and the opening is too wide) so it ends up on the shelf and we use the cheapo plastic and glitter star it was meant to replace.

Watching for ideas. There are some beautiful blown glass tree toppers but in my house they would last 5 minutes I suspect

Found a picture from last year.

Oh yes I’ve also used a red ribbon with wire in it to make a large bow.

FingonTheValiant · 23/09/2021 19:59

What a gorgeous tree SirSamuelVines ! Snowy looks fab, especially with the Harry Potter baubles (well, one at least...)

I did think about using one of the DSs toilet roll creations elQuintoConyo Grin

Glad it’s not just me who can’t make it work minipie 😂

Well spotted, Fingon, there's a few Potter baubles on the tree so having Hedwig at the top seems appropriate!

I bought a fabric angel at a craft fair about 3 years ago. success - after 40 yearsof toppling stars, santas , fairies etc.
I'm not sure what fabric it is- like wadding but stiffer and coloured.

EatSprayGlove · 23/09/2021 22:42

I used a Santa hat last year. I want a star but just can't find one big enough that isn't too heavy. I like the elf hat above I might try one of those somewhere this year

Iwantedtrianglesnotsquares · 23/09/2021 22:46

We use a Santa hat. The Angel we have is only about 2” tall so just hangs near the top- beneath the hat.

Figmentofimagination · 23/09/2021 22:47

We have Tinkerbell at the top of the tree. She doesn't sit on top of the highest branch but instead sits in front of it. We put lights behind her to make her wings light up. I've had her for about 12 years.

We've got dried allium heads from the garden, sprayed gold. Smaller get stuffed into branches and a huge one wired to the tree top

TerribleCustomerCervix · 23/09/2021 22:58

I got this fairy last year - feltsogood.co.uk/christmas-angel-topper

She’s gorgeous- lovely quality but light enough that she doesn’t cause the top of the tree to droop. Fair trade and sustainable as well!

They have a Santa version as well that I might get for the Tacky Tree the kids decorate in the kitchen.

ITSSSSCHRISTMASSS · 24/09/2021 00:05

I’m the same with my main tree, for years I just left it with no topper and just put nice big decorations around the top to try and distract from it. I did eventually buy a cheap Angel last year when I changed colours and it actually didn’t look too bad.

I have other trees that seem to work ok with various toppers, cheap stars, elf’s, hats…. I’ve been looking at new ideas this year and like these

We’ve only ever had angels on our trees. My daughter now has my grandmother’s Angel on hers.

aNewYorkerInLondon · 25/09/2021 07:32

I have my grandmother's papier-mâché angel from when she first got married. It's lightweight and beautiful and probably about 85 years old. Even though we're not religious, it's more if an honoring of her than anything else. Maybe someone in your family has something vintage?

What a lovely thing to have.

I wrap a whole string of lights round and round the top like a nest . Looks great
