Does anyone still use crackers?

Just curious. I haven't had Christmas crackers for years and was never overly impressed with them except maybe as a very young child. For years I have only had Christmas with one or two other people so it seems pointless anyway.
I am interested in how other people do things. Do you have crackers? What kind do you have?

I also put them on the Christmas tree and take them out when needed.

Chewbecca · 06/12/2020 20:57

Yes, absolutely, wouldn’t be Christmas dinner without them. We wear the hats and read the jokes.

I have varied it a bit over the years, sometimes added lottery tickets, sometimes made my own (but that turned out to be very expensive and lots of effort finding the gifts) and buying games ones such as whistles with music to play. Lots of fun.

MrsLebowski · 06/12/2020 21:01

I like them but my dog is scared of the snap. Thought of a homemade one without a snap but it's not quite the same.

Angel2702 · 06/12/2020 21:05

Yes we wouldn’t have Christmas without them. We’ve actually just pulled some just now with the kids.

We are only just finishing off the huge stash my Nan had stock piled, we’d never seen anything like it. They have lasted us 13 Christmases so far. They are quite good ones and have the metal screwdrivers, nail clippers etc in.

No. Not this year...I have made paper hats but nobody wants the awful plastic crap that you get inside them....its such a waste...!!

lollipoprainbow · 06/12/2020 21:53

Yes a cheap box just for my 8 year old dd to pull !!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/12/2020 09:24

I used to send a couple to DSis and niece in America - niece adored them and they couldn’t get them then.

A dd was working in Ethiopia years ago, came home for Christmas and before she went back bought some much-reduced crackers in the Jan sales to take back - their Christian community is Orthodox so Christmas is on 6th Jan.
The crackers went down a storm at their team Christmas dinner - they’d never seen them before and absolutely loved them.

We have origami ones this year. That’ll be a challenge if we’ve hit the pre-dinner drinks first.

Artinsurance · 07/12/2020 09:32

Left to my own devices, I'd not have them but DP insists on buying them whilst forgetting we have a veritable cracker mountain in the cupboard from all the ones he's bought in previous years 🙄

pinkksugarmouse · 07/12/2020 13:50

So glad I am not the only one who doesn't see the point of them. I don't get the idea that "it's not Christmas Dinner without crackers" of course it is because its a special day and a special dinner. Several pieces of card with junky bits and bad jokes don't make for a Christmas dinner. Unless your meal is so bad it requires such a distraction. 😂

Each person/couple/family make and keep or drop the traditions that mean something to them. And some people are on a budget so make priorities, crackers might not make it on a tight income.

With the money I might have spent on crackers I bought a replacement Uno card pack (DD got the last pack soaked during a camping trip with friends a couple of years ago). We liked Uno and this will be more meaningful than crackers for us. 😁

🤔 Some of my grammar is pretty poor on my earlier post but I think it makes my point.

We have them every year and we're not even in the UK. We have to rely on MIL's cracker smuggling skills to get them into the country. She's not been caught yet.

🤔 Why do you have to smuggle them? Unless you have some far more interesting items than the usual tat. 😂

We do crackers every year. This year I got “fill your own” ones. DD’s will have lip balm in and DH’s has mini port. Don’t know what will be in mine, DH has the job of filling it.

LastChristmas20 · 07/12/2020 13:58

Every year. I don't know anyone who doesn't.

Perhaps get them all out in a row/pile before he usually goes out and buys them and ask "from looking at these what do you think think we won't need any more of for the next (insert number of Christmases)? 😂

They're classed as explosives so are banned by most airlines and delivery companies.

Gifgif · 07/12/2020 14:27

No crackers? 😯

WillingWarlock · 07/12/2020 14:28

I would be very disappointed to go somewhere for Christmas dinner and for there not to be crackers. And this year, when we may well be spending Christmas as just one household, it is one of the only ways to differentiate the day from a normal day when we are having a roast dinner which is just a bit bigger than a usual roast dinner.

JM10 · 07/12/2020 14:30

Yes, but they are ones we made and are reusable. I buy some chocolates or something to go in them.

Can you not make your own? 🤔

Can you not make your own?

I don't have any gunpowder.

😂 I meant can't you buy the snaps in your country and card etc and make some? Not specifically go online to try and get some gunpowder.
