Does anyone still use crackers?

Just curious. I haven't had Christmas crackers for years and was never overly impressed with them except maybe as a very young child. For years I have only had Christmas with one or two other people so it seems pointless anyway.
I am interested in how other people do things. Do you have crackers? What kind do you have?

I make my own. It's really easy to do with a few toilet rolls, tissue paper and prebought 'snaps'. You can put good gifts in them (miniature rum etc., mini toiletries, chocolates). The kids help decorate them. I am no Kirsty Allsop but these, I can do. 😀

NiceGerbil · 06/12/2020 02:51

Yes of course.

Get pulled at start of meal and hats worn.

Shit jokes etc and crap gifts shared.

I mean the whole point is they're bollocks? And everyone laughs at the poor jokes etc.

NiceGerbil · 06/12/2020 02:54

'I also really couldn't expect DH to wear one of those dreadful hats. He has embraced so many of my Christmas loves including going from two pieces of tinsel to a 7ft tree but stupid hats? 🤔 Nope.

They just seem so utterly pointless. Unless you're aged under ten. But everyone does their own Christmas things and I appreciate that I am in a minority. 😁🎄🎅'

Depends on your family dynamics probably.

I always look askance at people who refuse to Don the paper crown but,

You do what makes your family happy.

I love pulling crackers tbh Grin

rockinaftermidnite · 06/12/2020 03:10

They're a part of our Christmas tradition! Stupid jokes, silly hats, plastic tat and all.

bloodyhairy · 06/12/2020 03:40

The basic Tesco ones are now plastic free Smile

Sniv · 06/12/2020 04:09

Yes, the hats and jokes are mandatory at Christmas dinner. I'm glad there are so many plastic-free ones available this year, though.

lovelemoncurd · 06/12/2020 05:22

We always have crackers. My children would get upset if we broke that family tradition!

beautifulmonument · 06/12/2020 05:46

Christmas without crackers? Are you on glue?

Chocolatechocolatechocolate · 06/12/2020 06:23

We always have crackers. If I look back on photos there is always one with everyone wearing their paper hats. I have made the crackers myself before - loved that I could make them personalised but took a lot of time

Bluntness100 · 06/12/2020 06:26

Yup totally they are just a bit of fun, silly hats, crappy jokes, ans some crap gift in the middle. Always have them before we start our meal.

Bluntness100 · 06/12/2020 06:32

I also really couldn't expect DH to wear one of those dreadful hats

Gosh, he sounds a bit uptight.

AuntieMarys · 06/12/2020 06:37

I fill my own. And I too hate paper hats 😀

NoGoodPunsLeft · 06/12/2020 06:40

There are loads which are plastic free, we're going to splash out on some slightly classier ones this year.

I have a set of measuring spoons from a cracker about 5 years ago, they're brilliant Smile

We also all wear our hats for the meal, it's tradition

JorisBonson · 06/12/2020 06:44

@Bluntness100

I also really couldn't expect DH to wear one of those dreadful hats

Gosh, he sounds a bit uptight.

My thoughts exactly.
Timbucktime · 06/12/2020 07:34

I think I’d be more surprised is people didn’t have them. But each to their own

Gotthetshirt23 · 06/12/2020 07:49

Gin crackers !Grin

RaggieDolls · 06/12/2020 07:57

I've been making my own the last few years.

Only six of us to dinner this year so I've made 2 x hand cream crackers, 2 x gin miniature and 2 x lego blind bag. I appreciate the blind bag is still plastic but it's not single use.

My DS has written out some of his favourite jokes, DD has done a Christmas trivia question and I've got some silly cardboard glasses instead of hats.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/12/2020 08:45

We stopped buying them about five years ago. Instead we do a kind of secret Santa where everyone gets a table gift. £3 cap. Last year I got a pair of knickers!

halcyondays · 06/12/2020 09:01

Always have them. Just normal ones from Tesco/Poundland or wherever. Not bothered what you get in them as long as you get a bang, a joke and a lovely hat.

paperdreams16 · 06/12/2020 09:38

We’ve got the plastic free ones from Tesco this year. Crackers are a must - mainly for the hat!

Amerimoon · 06/12/2020 09:39

I didn’t think people still had crackers these days?! Except my people aged 60+ who’ve just always had them! They’re awful Grin

Amerimoon · 06/12/2020 09:41

I’m not sure why that says “my” people - I’m not 60+ myself yet!!

SushiGo · 06/12/2020 09:44

I love crackers! They're traditional and good fun.

But I also hate the waste, so buy all recyclable and try and get a set with a recyclable group game to play instead of tat.

Next year I was thinking of going make your own with little 'fortune' tokens instead of a toy that can be reused every year.

PontiacBandit · 06/12/2020 09:46

I like crackers, try to get the more expensive ones. Mini screwdrivers have actually been useful. I'm thinking of making my own in future.

enjoyingscience · 06/12/2020 09:47

We do, but we get the make your own ones and put something nice inside, like a little bonus present. It’s become a bit of a challenge to fit the most ambitious thing inside. That said, the DC are usually very happy with a hot wheels car.
