Hosting Christmas this year and we'll have 7 adults to feed. No one is keen on turkey, a few people don't do beef or pork so this is what I'm planning:

Roast Chicken
Roast potatoes
Carrots
Cauliflower
Broccoli
Butternut squash mash
Stuffing
Gravy

Pudding: chocolate log

Will this be enough? If not, any ideas for extra sides? Something I can make in advance would be even better. Thank you x

Pigs in blankets????

LegoPandemic · 28/11/2020 17:55

Yorkshire puddings, pigs in blankets, sprouts with chestnuts?

myhobbyisouting · 28/11/2020 17:56

Creamed leeks and red cabbage too

Neptunesgiraffe · 28/11/2020 17:56

Cranberry sauce?

myhobbyisouting · 28/11/2020 17:57

And an alternative pudding too....cheese?

sakura06 · 28/11/2020 17:57

Sprouts
Bread sauce
Pigs in a blanket
Cranberry sauce

OverTheRainbow88 · 28/11/2020 17:57

You must have pigs in blankets, stuffing and Yorkshire pud and gravy!!!

Finfintytint · 28/11/2020 17:58

Peas Grin

Spied · 28/11/2020 17:58

I'd add a few extras
Roast parsnips
Yorkshire puddings
Braised red cabbage
Pigs in blankets for those who do do pork?

CosyQueen · 28/11/2020 17:59

Pigs in blankets definitely,
Yorkshire puddings,
Sprouts oven cooked with honey and pancetta,
Red cabbage,
Maybe a small joint of ham/gammon to go with the chicken for those that do eat pork?

halcyondays · 28/11/2020 18:02

Pigs in blankets, More than one choice of pudding and cranberry sauce. I think you’ve got plenty of sides, if you have a lot they don’t get eaten.

KitKat1985 · 28/11/2020 18:06

I'd add:

Pigs in blankets.
Yorkshire puddings.
Sprouts.
Roast parsnips.

SpamIAm · 28/11/2020 20:22

Surely you'll struggle to feed 7 with one chicken? Maybe we're just gluttons Blush

But yes, pigs in blankets. Lidl (I think) did some chicken ones last year, I think they're doing some plant-based ones this year, if the pork is an issue.

ShaunaTheSheep · 28/11/2020 20:24

Another pudding - trifle or pavlova

FAQs · 28/11/2020 20:27

There isn’t anything Christmassy on your list like others have said, Brussels sprouts, honey roasted parsnips, red cabbage, pigs in blankets, cranberry sauce.

Lots of lovely alternative Christmas puddings around, Chocolate log is more of any afternoon slice when the food coma starts to clear.

You could ask each adult to bring a contribution.

Floralnomad · 28/11/2020 20:30

Definitely another pudding but what you’ve described sounds very much like a run of the mill roast dinner that we’d have any day of the week , except the butternut squash mash which I don’t eat . I’d do a choice of meat and add in pigs in blankets and Yorkshire’s as a minimum .

Longbarn5 · 28/11/2020 20:30

Dont feel you have to do everything suggested. Remember that they are just good suggestions from a range of people and we all have different tastes. You dont necessarily need both broccoli and cauliflower but you definitely need the pigs in blankets 😁. I never do Yorkshire puds with Christmas lunch but I can fully understand why some people do. I very much agree that red cabbage is a good one. Pretty traditional with Christmas lunch but, like I say, we all have very different tastes.

Longbarn5 · 28/11/2020 20:34

Ps, A nice lemon tart and/or a bowl of nice fruits might be a good addition and is a fresh flavour of people dont want something really rich after the main meal. Possibly some mince pies with cream as an option. Whatever you decide I am sure everyone will enjoy it x

LtJudyHopps · 28/11/2020 20:36

You could buy a shop trifle as another pudding?
Yes to pigs in blankets - you can make them before and heat up.
We do swede and carrot, cook before and heat up also. To be fair this can be done with most veg IMO.
Yorkshire puddings
Roast parsnips
We’d also have another meat but appreciate we are gluttons! If a few people like beef I’d do a beef joint and leave in gravy
We’d probably also have sausage meat.

Hairwizard · 28/11/2020 20:40

Roast carrots and parsnips done with honey
Sprouts bar boiled then crushed and finished in oven with pancetta
What about a wee starter? My first year hosting i did prawn cocktail topped a wee slice of wheaten bread or melon. Or soup. Maybe some portobello mushrooms with cheese and herbs or some h'or deuves (sorry cant mind spelling i just keep hearing my dad saying horses doofers🤣)
Apple sauce
Ice cream with dessert. We usually have a yule log, a pud, and trifle. Though might ask mum to do a cheesecake.
Ooh and the baileys extra thick cream. Delish topped onto a coffee.

Hairwizard · 28/11/2020 20:42

Lidl have some lovely looking desserts in their frozen deluxe range btw. Once ive had a clear out i will be getting some in.

Lightsontbut · 28/11/2020 20:42

If people are expecting a traditional xmas meal they may be a little disappointed. I'd add in
Sprouts
Pigs in blankets
Parsnips
Bread sauce
Cranberry sauce
Yorkshires
Xmas pudding and brandy butter

That said, if people are happy to have an everyday roast instead then all good. Depends on what you all want really.

waitrosetrollydolly · 28/11/2020 20:48

Add Lobster bisque starter, then some light soup, then main meal, then pudding then cheese and biscuits then coffee and after eights.

CloudyVanilla · 28/11/2020 20:49

So just to give you an example my complete christmas dinner menu is:

Roast Chicken (usually turkey but not this year)
Roast Beef Joint
Pigs in Blankets
Bacon Wrapped Cranberry and Sausagemeat Stuffing
Yorkshire Pudding
Roast Potatoes
Mash Potatoes
Brussel Sprouts in Chestnuts and Bacon
Maple Roasted Parsnips
Cauliflower Cheese
Carrot and Swede Crush
Spiced Red Cabbage
Cream White Cabbage
Paxo Sage and Onion Stuffing
Gravy
Bread Sauce
Cranberry Sauce

Puddings will be Yule Log, Christmas pudding with brandy cream or trifle

If you could add a few more Christmassy bits that would be nice :)

Ideasplease322 · 28/11/2020 20:55
