Mad or cute Christmas traditions?

I absolutely love hearing about people’s crazy Christmas traditions, I don’t have any going on for my family at the moment unless you count my rather sweet one I mentioned on another thread where my cousin and I take tubs in sending each other a card I bought a few years ago, it’s my turn this year and I will write something cute, pop on this years Christmas stamp and she will have it for the year before returning it to me next year.

My favourite crazy was from a friend of my ex husbands years ago, he told me that his family had luxury breakfast, each member of the family (4 boys) had to get their order in with mum and dad by a week before Christmas and they could have absolutely anything they wanted. So one boy wanted takeaway curry which was ordered on Christmas Eve to reheat, another might choose mini Kiev’s and chips etc etc. Now I realise that sounds like hard work but I just thought it was so much FUN!

Does anyone here have any?

Christmas haggis instead of turkey.
Embroidered felt Christmas hats with names on.
Finish the Christmas jigsaw before opening presents

Extendable forks at the Christmas dinner table.

elQuintoConyo · 24/11/2020 13:26

We have a happy smiling log that shits gifts on Christmas Eve. You have to feed it and keep it wam under a blanket for a month, then whack it with a stick and sing it a song.

We have a silly tradition which has evolved over the years, my dad has a golf putting hole so every year after dinner we have the Christmas corridor golf tournament. Everyone crams into the upstairs corridor and takes turns to try and get the ball into the putting hole. The person who is currently taking their turn wears a flat cap (for some reason!) the kids keep score and we have a tiny plastic trophy for the winner. It's one of my favourite parts of Christmas and I'll miss it a lot this year!

HerbErtlinger · 24/11/2020 13:39

We have a competition to see who wins the world's strongest man competition. DP and I both pick a favourite and a back up. We were looking through the contestants the other week and were laughing about how knowledgeable we've become Grin

Puddingypops · 24/11/2020 13:44

We've confused a few neighbours over the years with Christmas Day BBQ s. It's a Christmas dinner, in BBQ form, so turkey burgers, full size pigs in blanket, Brussel sprout kebabs....

I bought one of these in Barcelona last Christmas!
NemoRocksMyWorld · 24/11/2020 21:35

We have an extra tree that just has disco balls on, with a large one on the top. We call it disco treever!

LajesticVantrashell · 24/11/2020 21:37

The shitting log is called Caga Tio!

LajesticVantrashell · 24/11/2020 21:40

Ours have developed over the years. Always fish pie on Christmas Eve. Always IAWL on Christmas Eve. Always watch Santa Claus the Movie while opening our gifts.

Kirstos1 · 24/11/2020 21:55

OK so this is a safe space right 😂? Well my partner and I (aged 39 and 40 with no children) watch one of the Madagascar movies every year while eating christmas dinner. We have done it for about 8 years now, we are back on Madagascar 2 this year. I don't even know how it started!

UndertheCedartree · 24/11/2020 21:58

I make my DC 'Christmas breakfast' on 1st December. I decorate the table, get out their Christmas plates and mugs, advent calendar propped up at their place and serve them Christmas shaped pancakes or crumpets, fruit shaped as candy canes or trees and mini mince pies and gingerbread men. I don't know if anyone remembers but last year some bonkers poster branded this 'plastic tat mentality'! And lots of people decided to join in and have a 'plastic tat mentality' breakfast! Grin

elQuintoConyo · 24/11/2020 22:10

Gaga Tio

And the Caganer, the man squatting with his trousers round his ankles doing a curly poo in your nativity Grin

We go for a Xmas day swim in the sea (not warm!).

pinkksugarmouse · 25/11/2020 23:00

My husband used to have pork pie for br on Christmas day. Not something I will be restarting as a Vegan. 😂

When DD was about 5 I found an advent set of 24 tiny books to go on the tree. Nothing odd there but we have always had hamsters and because the book are tiny and about mice planning for Christmas we make a point of reading a book to our hamster every day before putting it on the tree. We did it well into DD's teens and now she isn't interested I do it. 😂😂

pinkksugarmouse · 25/11/2020 23:04

To clarify we read a book to the hamster and then put the book on the tree not the hamster. 🐹😂

PodgeBod · 25/11/2020 23:05

This isn't mine, but I saw it online and thought it was so cute. Every December, the whole family would go out searching for pinecone. When they got home, the children would plant them in a pot in the back garden and go to bed. When they woke up, it had magically grown into a Christmas tree! The parents would either have one hidden in the garage or go out while they were in bed.

Catflapkitkat · 26/11/2020 03:47

In the few day just before Christmas, we have Elf night. Children get to put in a snack order of ridiculous snacks and we all watch ELF. Every year one person has to dress up as ELF. Last year it was DH and this year it is 13 year old DS. The ELF has to introduce the film whilst everyone groans and shouts get on with it. NO PHONES allowed on ELF night

Vodkafairy75 · 26/11/2020 04:36

@UndertheCedartree I remember that thread last year as I also had a plastic tat mentality breakfast 🤣. No time for the PTM Breakfast this year so we will be having a PTM Picnic for tea instead!

Love the reading to the Hamster tradition 🥰 and the golf one

Not really much in the Christmas traditions way here other than cooking a Cherry Cola Ham in the Slow Cooker overnight 23rd and party food tea on Christmas Eve. Our son will be almost 3 this Christmas so is just starting to understand it all so hopefully we can establish some new traditions in the next year or two.

TheDaydreamBelievers · 26/11/2020 05:34

Just reading all about Caga Tio and I LOVE IT. We have a xmas quiz each year which is deliberately mind bogglingly hard. The winner gets a handmade trophy that is deliberately charmingly crap

tartantroosers · 26/11/2020 05:50

I love this thread!

micc · 26/11/2020 07:28

Our little ones are still young so not firm traditions yet. I love the sound of the puzzle before you open presents! I might try that with my 4yo!!! Haha she might kill me.
I have a couple mild ones, my DD2 is only 2 months old, but I've started the tradition of taking them out on their own and buying an item of clothing and a toy for the other. I let my 4 year old choose for my baby, she chose her this cute little jumper and a teether. I'll wrap up a present and say it's from the baby for her. Next year I'll make more of a day of it and take DD1 to a Christmas market too, it will be nice to have 1 on 1 time as they get older.
Me and OH also have smoked salmon on sourdough bread with avocado and a mimosa on Christmas morning! We try and make it the most boujie breakfast ever seeing as I usually have weetabix!

When I was younger, we would open our stockings and then go for a dog walk before we opened out presents, my mum and dad would walk really slowly on purpose Haha

micc · 26/11/2020 07:30

@pinkksugarmouse I have this!! I had it growing up and now I have it for my daughter!!
