Mad or cute Christmas traditions?

I absolutely love hearing about people’s crazy Christmas traditions, I don’t have any going on for my family at the moment unless you count my rather sweet one I mentioned on another thread where my cousin and I take tubs in sending each other a card I bought a few years ago, it’s my turn this year and I will write something cute, pop on this years Christmas stamp and she will have it for the year before returning it to me next year.

My favourite crazy was from a friend of my ex husbands years ago, he told me that his family had luxury breakfast, each member of the family (4 boys) had to get their order in with mum and dad by a week before Christmas and they could have absolutely anything they wanted. So one boy wanted takeaway curry which was ordered on Christmas Eve to reheat, another might choose mini Kiev’s and chips etc etc. Now I realise that sounds like hard work but I just thought it was so much FUN!

Does anyone here have any?

We all wear a Xmas T shirt on Xmas day. Ddogs have a Xmas jumper.
This year dkitten will be wearing one also.
Ddogs also get a festive ddoggy toy and festive shaped ddoggy treats.

TheDaydreamBelievers I'm going to run a Christmas Quiz on here starting next Thursday, one question a day, some hard some rubbish Grin

So, if anyone else is interested, it'll be on the Christmas board, get your thinking caps on!

elQuintoConyo · 26/11/2020 08:20

When I was young we'd have a party on Christmas Eve. Best frocks on, games like pass the parcel, charades etc, table groaning with special part food: Ritz crackers and Philadelphia, monster munch, mini triangle sandwiches, cheese + pineapple on sticks in a melon hedgehog, that kind of thing.

Wore my duster and I out a treat! Then The Snowman on TV, pyjamas and bed. We slept tight through the night and woke to a small present on our bed.

BaublesAndGlitter · 26/11/2020 09:44

When I was little my dad would wake us up every morning in December by playing a Christmas album on the stereo downstairs, getting slowly louder and louder until the whole house was awake.
When I went to uni he called me every morning in December and played Christmas music at me down the phone (which must have been blaring in his van on his way to work).
Now (both dsis and I are in our 30s) this has morphed to one group phone call at around 6:30-7am on 1st December. We all listen to some random Christmas song together, moan about how silly it all is then get on with our day Xmas Grin

Kind of a tradition - my dad would always declare he'd seen Santa flying by on Christmas Eve and we always just too slow / late and missed him. He carried this on until we were teens but because we had younger cousins and now dsis has dc, he's done it every year since I was tiny.

Dsis and I also watch Muppets Christmas Carol on Christmas Eve. Have done it since we were small - now we FaceTime each other and watch it together or I go to hers (depending on if I'm away or home). We sing the songs and it's a lovely evening - even though eldest nephew is almost a teen and thinks we're 'so embarrassing' Xmas Grin

Not recent but years ago we got up on Christmas morning and put the TV on, it was on the channel showing the Soccer AM Christmas special. Instead of arguing what to watch we left it on and then it became tradition to always have the Soccer AM Christmas special on in the background while opening presents. Then corridor golf was in the afternoon 😂

SingleHandSue · 26/11/2020 16:00

We’ve had this board book with lights since DS1 was a toddler.

Every Christmas Eve I read it to both DSs. They say Christmas isn’t the same unless we have read it curled up on DS2’s bed with the lights dimmed.

They’re 19 and 15 and both over 6 foot tall but that tradition isn’t going anywhere!

@Santaisironingwrappingpaper - good luck getting a kitten to wear a Christmas jumper! Grin

UndertheCedartree · 26/11/2020 16:03

@elQuintoConyo - quiz sounds great!

UndertheCedartree · 26/11/2020 16:05

@elQuintoConyo - I love cheese and pineapple on a stick! Might make some for pre-lunch nibbles on Christmas day!

Bag4Lyf · 26/11/2020 16:08

When I was little I was always devastated on Boxing Day as it would be soooo looooong to wait for Santa again. So my mum used to keep a tiny present back for Boxing Day morning, just a pen or some socks or bubbles something, to soften the blow Grin

UndertheCedartree · 26/11/2020 16:13

@BaublesAndGlitter - we watch Muppet's Christmas Carol every Christmas Eve too! Myself and DD sing all the songs while DP and DS look on amused!

inappropriateraspberry · 26/11/2020 16:19

We always had a last present form Father Christmas tucked away in the branches of the Christmas tree at the end of the day. Only something small, like socks, but it was a nice way to round off the day before going to bed.

AndwhenyougetthereFoffsomemore · 26/11/2020 16:20

Probably outing to anyone who knows me:

On Christmas Eve Santa does an early drop at our house with Christmas PJs and a note. You hear jingling bells (but never see him of course), and the PJs are always freezing cold, because they've come straight from the North Pole, obv

We have real, burning candles on our Christmas tree (German heritage) and normally have a Christmas party where we light them and everyone sings whatever Christmas songs and carols we can remember. Then every child in the room gets to snuff out one candle, in alphabetical order, and they each take a chocolate from the tree.

But I want a shitting log.

PiggyPlumPie · 26/11/2020 16:23

@pinkksugarmouse

We have those books, bought when DD1 was a baby - she's now 21!

They get read throughout Advent and placed on their own twiggy shit tree. The cat listened last year!

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 26/11/2020 16:32

Aside from the Nativity Stegosaurus, and stockings for the dogs (as cats) I think we’re pretty normal.

Except for the Frida the F*ck cushion. We change out our sofa throw cushions every year for a selection on different embroidered & characters Christmas ones. Our old Ddog took a particular liking to one with a Victorian lady on it about 4 years ago & decided to ‘romance’ it (not that he has the baubles anymore).

Every year, when this particular cushion comes down from the loft, Ddog restarts his Holiday romance.

Hence why, on a Saturday before Christmas, somewhere in the UK, amidst angels singing & carollers Dinging & Donging Merrily, you may hear the cry, “Oh no! You’ve forgotten Frida the F*ck!”

TheCrow · 26/11/2020 16:35

It sounds like your dog is also merrily dinging and donging with Frida @centrifugalBumblePuppy 😂

ShrimpSymphony · 26/11/2020 16:41

We buy the tackiest bauble we can find every year. It has to be from a real shop and not online. We have some real ‘treasures’ 😂

CorianderQueen · 26/11/2020 17:31

My dad used to climb onto the roof and jungle bells just above out windows when we were about to go to sleep. We'd race to the window but always thought we'd just missed seeing Father Christmas.

He also used to get the dog to pull the sled around the garden to leave tracks and he'd use a tin can to make the 'reindeer' hoof marks

merlotormalbec · 26/11/2020 17:32

@elQuintoConyo I fully thought you were being sarcastic until someone posted the name and I googled it. this is brilliant 😂

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 26/11/2020 18:43

We used to dress the guinea-pigs up on Christmas Eve , this was 3 of them (No animals were harmed , the hats were placed on their tiny skulls but it does look like our boar has farted and his wives are gassed ..)

We now have cats (no piggies now )
They don't do hats but they buy a present for DS and DD and it is badly wrapped with random fur on the sellotape ( I stole this idea from MN Xmas Grin )

I eat a whole Terrys Chocolate Orange for breakfast on Boxing Day. At about 11am with coffee.

I’m a very mean Mum and I stretch the opening of gifts throughout the day, stockings first thing, late morning Father Christmas gifts, afternoon presents from my husbands side of the family then evening gifts will be opened from my side of the family.

It’s all a bit too much opening everything of Christmas morning, it spreads out the anticipation and excitement!

elQuintoConyo · 26/11/2020 21:03

Love love love the guniea pigs Grin

Here's our Caga Tio...
