Nintendo Switch Games - Recommendations

DS9 recently saved up for one. Loved Pokemon Sword and enjoys Mario Kart.

What else might he enjoy?

I hear good things about Zelda but he might be a bit young. Animal crossing? luigi's mansion? Crash bandicoot? The games are eye wateringly expensive so would love to hear your experiences/recommendations.

Mario Odyssey and Mario party are very good!

ritzbiscuits · 16/11/2020 18:51

Best two games by far are Mario Odyssey and Zelda - Breath of the Wild. Both regularly come in best Switch game/even video games lists.

DS is 7 and plays Zelda, there is no blood/gore and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it for a 9yo.

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 16/11/2020 18:53

Ooh following. We were looking at mario kart and party and 12 dwitch to start with.... but all eyewatering.

Has he got minecraft?

Yoffel · 16/11/2020 19:00

DS has really enjoyed splatoon and super smash bros in the past at around that age.

Blibbler · 16/11/2020 19:06

Another vote for Zelda breath of the wild, we are considering a 2nd switch for this year's Xmas as it has had ds9, dd8 and now DP all working their way through it - and a recommendation to get the companion guide book. We also play Mario kart and party as a family. Minecraft is also popular still after 2 yrs. DS is starting to feel left out because we won't allow Fortnight but it is v popular with his classmates

ponygirlcurtis · 16/11/2020 19:07

My son has Super Smash Bros, Mario Maker, Minecraft and Animal Crossing. And Splatoon, but he couldn't play much on it without an online subscription to Nintendo, which isn't really clear so that's something to be aware of for other games too. (We do have one now, it's about £18 a year so not loads but I objected to needing it!)

OdeToAutumn · 16/11/2020 19:09

My 7 year old is obsessed with Zelda. He picked it up very quickly and has completed it a few times. There are some bits that he needed a little help with, but my husband also loves it. I started my own game too and really enjoy it.

Mario odyssey is good as well. We have crash and I find it frustrating. My son enjoys it but he gets annoyed with it when he can’t do it.

I don’t have it but friends son has luigis mansion and they said it is really fun

ponygirlcurtis · 16/11/2020 19:09

Should have said, DS is 8, about to turn 9. He has asked for The Survivalists and Luigi's Mansion for his birthday.

BertieBotts · 16/11/2020 19:11

Mario Party is brill if he plays with friends.

Zelda is a good one player one.

cameocat · 16/11/2020 19:12

Oh thank you for recommendations! We have Minecraft already as I'm afraid we have an Xbox (he isn't the oldest). I'm really pleased you told me about Zelda, I'll put on the list.

Mario odyssey seems second most popular but please keep sending feedback. Very helpful!

My son had a switch when he was 9.

I've just asked him and he loves Lego city undercover.
Also loves Mario kart which is good to do multi player on too.

His absolute favourite now is Minecraft but I see you already have that...

Hope that helps.. Smile

Funnyface1 · 16/11/2020 19:24

Yes to crash bandicoot. My ds is 10 but been playing all the versions since he was 8, it's brilliant and his favourite.

RubixCubix · 16/11/2020 19:31

No one has mentioned Pikmin yet! This is one of my all time favourite Nintendo games, since the original version on GameCube (remember those?) back in the day. DS13 is a big fan too and we play the 2 player battle mode against each other all the time. It has a lot of strategy and problem solving too so it's kind of semi educational....Grin

BellatrixLestat · 16/11/2020 19:32

Luigi's mansion definitely!

SanFranBear · 16/11/2020 19:34

Mario Oddysey is absolutely brilliant - DS was 8 when be completed it and it's very cool!

DuzzyFuck · 16/11/2020 19:40

Here to recommend 'Toejam & Earl - Back in the groove' which was originally a Sega game back in my day (early 90s) and was updated / rereleased for Switch a couple of years back.

I paid about £15 for it on the Nintendo online store and it's so joyous and silly, can be picked up and put down, loads of re-play potential because you can randomise the levels, and doesn't need to be played online (but can be).

There's the occasional fart joke for good measure too Grin

MrsWhites · 16/11/2020 19:47

Those who have Super Smash Bros, is it violent? It’s just it seems to be rated 12 which is higher than all the other Mario style games.

We also have luigi’s haunted mansion, it’s definitely not as good as Odyssey. I’ve heard good things about mario 3D all stars so we have ordered that for Christmas.

MegBusset · 16/11/2020 19:55

Zelda is difficult - I had to give up and I'm 43! Fine if you have DC that like a challenge and don't mind getting killed a lot. It does look gorgeous though.

Super Smash Bros is extremely violent in that you have to beat / blow everyone else up until they lose, that's the whole point Grin it's not gory in the slightest though, no idea why it's a 12.

SeasonallySnowyPeasant · 16/11/2020 19:56

DS is 10 and apart from the games already mentioned (Mario Odyssey is a hit) he also enjoys Overcooked. It's a multiplayer game so good for playing with family and friends.

Trekkerbabe · 16/11/2020 19:57

Following!
I've been recommended ring fit adventure for Nintendo. Anyone got a view on it?

SeasonallySnowyPeasant · 16/11/2020 20:05

We got Ringfit Adventure when it first came out. I think it's been played precisely once. I might get him to play it again now that his year group is self-isolating for 2 weeks though Grin

spidermomma · 16/11/2020 20:07

Well I got one for my dc and I can sit an play Mario cart when I'm alone let alone them. Also the free download for Mario from years ago. Brilliant !!!!

risefromyourgrave · 17/11/2020 08:12

Pikmin 3 is a fabulous game and has a great co-op, my son (16) and I have been playing it together and are now working through the missions. The Pikmin are adorable!
Animal Crossing is worth the price for how much time you play on it, I got mine in July and have already racked up over 400 hours on it. Blush We have 3 cartridges of it in our house as my son and daughter also play it on their Switch Lites.
Lego City Undercover is another fab game, lots of jokes and plenty to do.
Super Mario Galaxy is my favourite Mario game (Rosalina is my hero!) and is available on Mario All Stars along with Mario 64 and Sunshine. I didn’t like Odyssey for some reason, but the kids love it.
Rayman Legends is amazing, great fun to play, beautiful music and should be quite cheap now.
I haven’t played Luigi’s Mansion but my kids and husband have and they all love it.
The Incredibles Lego game was quite buggy when we first got it and I haven’t played it since.
I didn’t like Zelda, either Link’s Awakening or Breath of the Wild, but then the only Zelda I like is the Wind Waker.
I’ve just ordered Untitled Goose Game for my husband as he loves daft stuff like that, and I think he will enjoy playing it with my daughter.
Lego Harry Potter is also good, and I think that is a fairly reasonable price at the moment.
Think that’s all the recommendations I’ve got!

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 17/11/2020 08:49

This is reallg helpful.

So neednt be a waste for a 12yr girl who seesm to want it over xbox.

OneLinePlease · 17/11/2020 08:51

Another vote for BotW

My husband played it through and my 7yo (who is scared of Minecraft on survival mode) loves it.

Isn't gory or anything. And plenty to explore/do even if they don't want to be following the game quests.

Mario Odyssey also very good.
