DS9 recently saved up for one. Loved Pokemon Sword and enjoys Mario Kart.

What else might he enjoy?

I hear good things about Zelda but he might be a bit young. Animal crossing? luigi's mansion? Crash bandicoot? The games are eye wateringly expensive so would love to hear your experiences/recommendations.

@MrsWhites

No I don't think Smash is violent in a worrying sense. The characters beat each other up and cast spells/throw things. But nothing scary or gory or realistic. Same as how Mario can shoot fireballs and jump on peoples heads etc.

I'm quite a precious parent when it comes to what I let my 7yo be exposed to. But Smash is ok in my books.

OneLinePlease · 17/11/2020 08:56

Oh yes! @risefromyourgrave how did I forget Untitled Goose Game?!

We all love that one. Very quick to complete though so don't spend too much on it.

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 17/11/2020 08:57

Im a bit wary of how expensive all these games are! Any hints?

BertieBotts · 17/11/2020 09:05

I think Smash Bros is a 12 because you can play online?

They can be expensive. Look at shops like CEX, Game etc where you can trade and buy pre-owned games.

I had no idea toejam and Earl was out for switch!! Will have to have a look at that.

Rollercoaster1920 · 17/11/2020 09:11

Are the singalong games Just Dance any good?

Our 8 year old loves Minecraft best, but needs the online subscription to play with his friends.
Then Pokemon sword and shield (plus expansion pass), animal crossing, asphalt (free download with online).
Luigi's mansion has been sporadic as he gets stuck.
Mario kart is fun for multiplayer, but feels over priced to me. Especially when asphalt was free which gives multiplayer after a level is unlocked.

The online subscription gets the classic and NES games as a free download, plus some other games that are free to play and are funded by in game purchase to get ahead.

I’ve just put Toejam and Earl on my Christmas list, I loved the original back in the 90’s!

MrsWhites · 17/11/2020 10:10

@OneLinePlease thanks, that’s reassuring, I think we’ll let his granny get him that one then.

EndlessWaffle · 17/11/2020 10:14

Mario Odyssey and Luigi mansion. My DS is 9. His 40 YO uncle (seasoned gamer) also loves them, and plays them with his 5 YO DS. So should have some longevity. After all they're a bit £££!

CakeIsMyFavouriteAndBest · 17/11/2020 10:22

My girls 13 & 10 love Animal Crossing. Have to play everyday. We recently got lego harry potter and that is being played a lot too. We have the Mario kart and the Mario party too. Thinking of Toshiba for Christmas for them.

OneLinePlease · 17/11/2020 10:24

@PineappleUpsideDownCake

Yes Nintendo games are pricey. And you'll find even second hand they keep their value.

I think part is to do with the cartridge technology. And part is just for demand.

Bells3032 · 17/11/2020 10:25

The crash bandicoot n sane trilogy is brill. I would avoid the new one for a child though (my gamer husband is struggling with it). Also sypro or the lego games are great

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 17/11/2020 10:26

Cex have second hand consoles for £1 more than new!!!

The games price has had me leaning towards the xbox as their games are cheaper second hand. But I think my girls would like games they can play together and maybe the active moving ones.

The ring fit looks great but really expensive for one game unless you know you will use it!!!

dannydyerismydad · 17/11/2020 10:38

Animal Crossing. But for yourself. Don't let kids ruin your island Witt tree stumps and holes.

Captain Toad is a great puzzle solver.

Mario Kart is an absolute classic.

Yoshi's crafted world also.

I love Mario games but they go from fun to rock hard so quickly I get frustrated i can't complete them.

Occitane · 17/11/2020 10:53

I love the Switch! My favourite games are Zelda Breath of the Wild, Zelda - Link's awakening, Paper Mario Origami King, Super Mario Odyssey, Lego Harry Potter. I had Pikmin and Super Mario Galaxy for the Wii, and they were both brilliant games, but I haven't bought them for the Switch yet.

My adult DD loves Animal Crossing.

BertieBotts · 17/11/2020 10:55

Yes CEX respond to market pricing - so if the actual console is out of stock everywhere they will generally resell for the same or more than it costs to buy new. If you are looking at something that's easily available then the prices will be lower, not always hugely lower though for recently released games or where the new price remains high.

PurpleSproutingSomething · 17/11/2020 22:26

Paper Mario - Origami King is brilliant, it's got a bit of everything and a great game for kids (and adults) I bought it for myself and had my 11 yo DS help me on some of the boss levels. I did have to watch a few youtube walk throughs to help at times.

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 18/11/2020 04:21

@BertieBotts not currently. Cex did have xbox1 cheaper when we were considering that.

Switch freely available in argos near me at 279.99. Cex priced at £280 second hand.

The games are actually worse. Both of these ones which we are looking at are £39.99 in Currys. Yet more for second hand in cex.

I don't understand why anyone would buy second hand for more than new!

We are buying for Xmas (and will probably try and buy new on Black Friday. ) But as our income has made this a huge purchase for us thought we'd look at cex first. Hence the surprise they were selling consoles and games at a higger price for second hand...

If my ds7 is playing alone he always puts on Mario odyssey or Paper Mario origami king. He loves Mario odyssey.

If I'm playing against him we play Super Mario Party. I think it's great for 2 or more players and also allows a quick competition like best of 5.

When dp plays with ds, they always choose super Mario bros 2 . It's like the one we played as kids on the Nintendo ds, collecting coins and passing courses. It's very good as they can play together on the same team to help ds get through harder levels. Theres also different levels, eg if you select the character Nabbit, he doesnt die as easy as Mario and Luigi, so it is easier for DC.

Luigis mansion never really gets played.

I'm going to look at zelda following all the suggestions from PP.

Lazysundayafternoons · 18/11/2020 05:55

Just saw there are 2 zeldas, which would be best for 7yo boy, or which is the first one?

micc · 18/11/2020 06:05

I really recommend Animal Crossing!! What about minecraft or rollercoaster tycoon?

Coldwinterahead1 · 18/11/2020 06:07

Crash Team racing is a massive hit with my boys.

MrsWhites · 18/11/2020 07:12

Great to hear good recommendations for Paper origami king, we have that for DS for Christmas.

If you are looking for family games, Mario party is great fun. You can play individual mini games and also mini tournament/board games with challenges along the way. But you will need to buy additional controllers if more than 2 will be playing, they are quite pricey too!

SionnachRua · 18/11/2020 08:27

Paper Origami King is really good.

Zelda wise you want Breath of the Wild, not the other one. Other one is supposed to be good but it's a very different game - a prequel to Botw and much more focusing on killing reams of enemies.

The Spyro remastered trilogy is excellent. I've only played on ps4 but I hear it's good on Switch.
