Your best presents and the gift you never got

What are the best presents you've received, either as an adult or child? And what present did you want but never got?

One of my favourite presents as a kid was unwrapping the video of The Little Mermaid. I didn't know it had come out on video and it was my favourite movie at the time. I still remember the feeling of opening it. I remember another year Santa brought me a My Little Pony stable, I loved that. My favourite as an adult was last year, a drone from DH and DS. I love tech stuff!

One year me and my friend both wanted a Sega Mega Drive. We had different shaped presents under the tree from parents so wondered if one of us got one and one of us didn't. I was so sure I'd got it... Til I unwrapped a chocolate making set. I was of course very grateful for what I got and thanked my parents but inside I did feel disappointed. My friend got one, I was envious but got to play it at hers when I went over.

I have a feeling DH is going to get me a Mega Drive this year 😁

So fun to read all these. I just remembered Santa brought me a Tropical Ariel doll and I loved that too as I'd never seen it. Plus a set with Ariel's pink dress she wears to dinner in the film and the dinner set. I was Little Mermaid obsessed 😂

Found the set online that I got, I loved it!

My favourite toy ever was Peaches and Cream Barbie, but I think it was for my birthday. I loved her and would adore one as a present now.

Zoflorabore · 11/11/2020 03:07

I wanted a typewriter one year and was told
it was too expensive ( I sadly found out accidentally very young that Santa didn’t exist- my older neighbour told me ) and I was so upset thinking about it all the time.

Fast forward to Christmas morning-
I got my typewriter and I was over the moon. I can’t remember asking for something and not getting it and one of my favourite memories was eating selection box chocolate at 5am Smile

The gift I never got was a proper dolls house, like the collector ones with hand made furniture. They were ££££ so no surprise.

CocoLoco87 · 11/11/2020 05:50

I always wanted a big red fun bus... there was an advert on TV for one (early 90's) and I never got one. Best presents were gymnastics barbie and a sylvanians house. I wanted a Mr Frosty too but I dont think I ever actually asked for one - I probably knew my mum wouldn't get it!

As an adult DH bought me a handbag I'd been eyeing up. I didnt know what colour to go for and he chose the colour and filled it with skincare products from a brand I use all the time. It was so thoughtful and unexpected!

I always wanted Barbie's dreamhouse and the Sylvanian Family canal boat.

My parents always went all out for Christmas and we were all really spoilt come to think of it, I had plenty of Barbie's and Sylvanians but those were the 2 things I always wanted.

Like a PP I also wanted a handmade, beautiful dolls house but I never actually asked for one because I knew it would be an automatic no. Our local newsagents used to sell them along with all the beautiful furniture and dolls, I would spend ages looking at them everytime I went. Sadly the newsagents (which was a lovely quaint shop) is no longer there 😔

Forgot to mention the best present!

One year my parents made a big deal about me chosing whether I wanted a TV or CD player for my room, I obviously couldn't have both so after much deliberation I chose a CD player because I could always watch TV downstairs. That Christmas I opened not only the CD player but the TV as well, I was so happy!

I later found out from my dad that he was not in agreement with this, it was my mum with the spending problem who bought both and had wracked up a huge amount of debt when they had originally agreed to one or the other.

Another year was when I got HP and the Goblet of Fire. Having to wait months to get it and then opening it last on Christmas day was amazing, I think I spent most of that Christmas with my nose in a book.

Finally, last Christmas DP bought tickets for the Harry Potter studio experience, arranged and had paid for flights and hotel, and then on the day we went he proposed 😁 best present ever!

My lovely dh bought me Mr Frosty one Christmas, and I can confirm that my parents’ judgement was sound. It’s a frustrating pile of crap!

And unfortunately my dc were as entranced by the concept as every child ever. So muggins here still ended up crying with frustration trying to grind ice with a tiny plastic handle.

Clearly adults in the 1980s had a lot more sense!

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 11/11/2020 07:02

My best one was an art bundle of sketch pads, pencil crayons, felt tips, glitter, tissue paper etc. Had literally months of fun. My worst was a copy of Jane Eyre - I was 8 and Roald Dahl was more my speed!

Actually, a Mr Frosty counts as the present I never got. Pleaded for one as a child. However, everyone I know that had one has since told me how useless they were! Grin

mummyh2016 · 11/11/2020 07:31

The big red fun bus was my favourite present, in fact I'm gutted we don't have it anymore so my DD can play with it!
I had a mr frosty and it was shit.

SteveHarringtonsHair · 11/11/2020 07:40

My favourite present was a Sony Walkman when I was 14. I thought I was the bees knees with it Grin

The present I never got was a Mr Frosty along with others on the thread. Although XH did buy me one as a joke on my 30th, it was totally rubbish and quickly donated to the charity shop.

Whiskeylover45 · 11/11/2020 08:33

Looking at all these reviews for Mr frosty, I'm beginning to wonder if I should ask DH for something else 😂

Sweetener12 · 11/11/2020 10:00

I've always wanted a guitar but my mom was against that because she believed it will ruin my already not so good posture. I was begging for a guitar through my teen years and finally I got one at the age of 22.

the best gifts are a necklace with little sun from my sister and a professional photo shoot from my mom. Oh, and the nice earrings from my ex-boyfriend (who was my current boyfriend back then)

louise4745 · 11/11/2020 10:04

It's funny you mention Mr Frosty. My kids have been after one for years.

We have had the Num Num Lip Gloss Truck, Slime Factories, Chocolate Makers etc. They all end up sticky and dirty and are never as good as it looks on tv so I keep refusing.

I honestly can't think of a present I've loved especially since becoming an adult. I just seem to get slippers or pjs!!

As a kid probably Cabbage Patch Dolls or the large Trolls with soft bodies.

AliceMcK · 11/11/2020 10:26

@RainingDogs

I forgot about Mr Frosty! I wanted that too!
Me too and Mr Fruity.
WanderlustWitch · 11/11/2020 10:34

The best present I got.. that would be my first typewriter when I was 12. I wanted to be a writer so it was absolutely spot on.

Present I never got but wanted.. that would be a soda stream. My friend had one and I loved it. Mum thought it was a waste of time when you can just buy a bottle of pop 😂

I did become a writer btw, and I still don't have a soda stream 😂

AliceMcK · 11/11/2020 10:36

I remember getting a portable black and white tv one year. Probably the best present I ever got. Most years I was disappointed as my brothers always got the stuff I wanted, cool games, snooker table, video games, While I got girly stuff & dolls which I hated. I did get excited one year when I got a strawberry shortcake house but while my parents were pissed wrapping it (like every Christmas Eve) they put the stickers to decorative my house in the box the got for one of our neighbours kids, little bitch refused to give me her spare set 😂

I remember one year getting in so much trouble as I went across to my friends house with my new doll in her basket and when I came home I’d swapped the doll for a hulk, my parents knew something was up because I was smiling, checked the basket and saw hulk staring up at them.

I’ve never gotten over not getting Mr Frosty & Mr Fruity & a plastic areoplane that you could put cans of pop in its wheels😩😆

yep I knew from experiance it was crap yet still bought DS one the other year. I figured they must have fixed the problems in 20 plus years but they have not.

Guess they dont need to when us idiots keep buying them dispite how bad they are lol.

HintOfVintagePink · 11/11/2020 17:04

OP I think we may be of a similar age. The Little Mermaid on video and the MLP stable being back happy memories.

My best present ever were front row tickets to the SCD live show and getting my first pair of ballet shoes signed by Darcey.

The present I always wanted as a child was one of those Mr Freeze iced drinks makers or a Girls World head. No idea why!

Londonmummy66 · 11/11/2020 17:16

Worst present - a copy of Children of the New FOrest - I was a voracious reader but couldn't finish it it was so boring - also I didn't really understand why you'd give a book as a present when you could get them for free from the library.

Closely followed by the year I asked DH for a nice watch - lots of hints about a Tank and he bought me....a cheap Nike plastic one. Fortunately I had seen the email from Amazon confirming the order otherwise I might have cried on opening it....

MillieVanilla · 11/11/2020 17:17

My engagement ring last Christmas
Did not see it coming whatsoever
I cried like a tit Blush

HintOfVintagePink · 11/11/2020 17:41

How funny! I hadn’t even read the whole thread before posting. I meant Mr Frosty not Mr Freeze. Their marketing must have been amazing!
