Your best presents and the gift you never got

What are the best presents you've received, either as an adult or child? And what present did you want but never got?

One of my favourite presents as a kid was unwrapping the video of The Little Mermaid. I didn't know it had come out on video and it was my favourite movie at the time. I still remember the feeling of opening it. I remember another year Santa brought me a My Little Pony stable, I loved that. My favourite as an adult was last year, a drone from DH and DS. I love tech stuff!

One year me and my friend both wanted a Sega Mega Drive. We had different shaped presents under the tree from parents so wondered if one of us got one and one of us didn't. I was so sure I'd got it... Til I unwrapped a chocolate making set. I was of course very grateful for what I got and thanked my parents but inside I did feel disappointed. My friend got one, I was envious but got to play it at hers when I went over.

I have a feeling DH is going to get me a Mega Drive this year 😁

I got my daughter a mr frosty last year lol she had begged for it and I remembered how desperate I was for one anyway turn out it is rubbish 🤣

zatarontoast · 11/11/2020 19:33

If it's any consolation Mr Frosty was absolutely crap. The ad really hyped it up, it was a complete pain to crush the ice and the resulting 'drink' was rank.

@Lovemusic33
Yes! Still got one, my kids love playing with it now! Missing an ear though

Best present was a puppet. (Bosco for any Irish members of a certain age) Still have it 35 years +++ later.

Always wanted a Mister Frostie but never got one for Christmas. However next door neighbour got one as an early teen and had no interest in it so gave it to me. I used it one and understood why santa did not bring it to me. It got passed on to a girl who lived across the road.

As a child it was a beautiful navy blue Silver Cross type doll's pram. I'm one of five and thinking back, it was probably the most expensive thing any of us were given by our parents (my brother got lucky - he passed his 11 plus when a wealthy uncle was visiting from abroad and got a bike!).

As an adult there are two that come to mind. One was a football-sized Terry's Chocolate Orange from a friend - took me until the following February to finish it Grin Happy sigh...

The other was from DH the year we got married: we got married by Special Licence. The Licence is a beautiful legal document with the seal of the Archbishop of Canterbury - DH had it framed Smile

I've never wanted anything in particular so never missed out.

(I've only ever heard of Mr Frosty on MN - perhaps it's after my time)

@RainingDogs HaHa snap! Exactly the same age!

Actually thinking of it, my poor parents got me The Little Mermaid on video one Christmas. Although it was an adaptation of the original and not the Disney version they thought it was. 5 year old me was slightly terrified when she pulls of her own tail scales and kills herself! Not my happiest Boxing Day memory ConfusedGrin

RainingDogs · 12/11/2020 15:09

@HintOfVintagePink oh my god that must have been pretty scary compared to the Disney version! Ahh a great 90s memory for you 😂😂

I had asked for a whole bunch of movie posters like the ones here:

One year I finally found the perfume I'd always been looking for, as a sample in the Grauniad magazine. I was thrilled to have found one with the right smell, then heartbroken when I looked for it online & saw that the cheapest version was way out of my range, as we didn't have much money back then.

That Christmas I bought myself a few small bits (DH hates present shopping, fuss, etc so he doesn't buy me anything himself) & we opened things on Christmas morning. Then he said, "You haven't had a big present," & he was right but I gamely picked up one of my prezzies & said, "This is my big present".

He reached behind him & got a gift bag out of nowhere & gave it to me. It was my perfume! And what's even more lovely of him is that he'd broken his commute home on Christmas Eve, gone into a town & battled through the crowds to find it for me. Knowing that that's his idea of hell made it all the more special.

It's made me cry, typing this. Mind you, he hasn't done it since. Once is enough, though.

My best present ever was the first £1 shop presents my dc bought me when my friend and I decided to let them go free in the shop - me with her kids abd her with mine! They had free choice and chose some random stuff! All bought with love!

As a child I always wanted Mr Frostie! As an adult I understand why!

Holothane · 19/11/2020 20:24

My best present was sweet April doll when I was eight my disappointment was a radio cassette when I really wanted a huge ghetto blaster, it was cheap and the tape broke a couple of years later. I now have my huge ghetto blaster my dh let me buy one a couple of years ago for my cds it’s a huge retro one I love it.

Clevererthanyou · 19/11/2020 21:10

My dad bought me a Sony Walkman mp3 player in pink one year for my commute to school so I was heartbroken when it stopped working but I didn’t say a word. Christmas Day came and my folks said I would be having clothes and a laptop and that I was 17 now so not to expect anything else. To be fair, I thought that clothes and a laptop was quite lavish. I unwrapped the clothes and laptop but there was a pile of gifts left for me, I unwrapped a Nintendo Wii, a designer watch and an IPod ... I was so shocked that I cried Grin I didn’t even know that my dad had noticed my mp3 was broken.
It turned out they were over compensating for my shit childhood, I’ll never ever forget that year.

Inpeace · 24/11/2020 09:43

I’m 50 now ...

As a child my aunt and uncle got me a standing Paddington Bear in real red wellies and proper buttons duffel coat. He had a label please look after this bear.💕
I do not know how or when he was disposed of :(

The other present I remember I loved and used was from my grandad it was a huuuge green pear beanbag seat.

I never got a .... Mr Frosty! But it seems my parents might have been right to dismiss that!

IHaveAGreyLamp · 24/11/2020 10:30

Did anyone actually get a Mr Frosty? Did they ever sell any? Because it seems that everyone on here wanted one but never got one! (Me included!)

DuzzyFuck · 24/11/2020 11:00

Always wanted a Mr Frosty and one of those things where penguins go up the stairs and down a slide. I received the latter as a joke gift for my 18th birthday!! Grin

bendmeoverbackwards · 24/11/2020 12:52

Best present - huge Sindy house, the one with the lift at the side. My mum and older sister spent much of the day assembling it! I furnished it over the years, loved it.

I never got a Speak and Spell so I bought a vintage one when my dc were small Smile

bendmeoverbackwards · 24/11/2020 12:54

My best present was sweet April doll

Was that the one in the swing @Holothane?

Kljnmw3459 · 24/11/2020 13:01

As a child I very quickly learned that I would never get what I wanted for Christmas. I wanted proper tools, especially a hammer and a saw, some nails but very sensibly my mum refused. I'm still disappointed about it!

BigBadBox · 24/11/2020 13:17

I had a Mr Frosty but we were never allowed to use it, it just sat cluttering the kitchen cupboard up for a couple of decades...

mam0918 · 24/11/2020 13:44

I loved my penguin slide as a kid... now you have made me want anothor one, wondering if I can get away with calling it 'xmas decor' lol
DuzzyFuck · 24/11/2020 14:12

@mam0918 It's absolutely Christmas decor!! You could use it as a table centre or around the bottom of the tree Wink

AlexaPlayWhiteNoise · 24/11/2020 17:29

I've got my DS a penguin slide for his birthday Grin he's going to love it.

I got a new frosty, it was rubbish, you had to crush the ice before you put it in the ice crusher, and then it would melt before you actually got any if the syrup on it.
