How prepared are you?

Just wondering how far people have got with their Christmas preparations, especially since England is about to be locked down until 2nd December (at least!)

I would say I'm two thirds done. I've finished shopping for DS and have a few bits for DP, DM, 3 out of 6 nieces/nephews. Still need to get presents for my DB and the in laws (no idea what to get!). The rest can be done online apart from some supermarket sweets.

I've also ordered the turkey and got crackers, wrapping paper and some toddler friendly tree decorations (my precious glass ones aren't making an appearance this year!)

How much have you all got left to do?

DD is having a big present that's ordered and paid for to pick up in a couple of weeks. I just need to get her a few more smallish things to open. I've got two main items for her stocking, I need some chocolate and bits I can mostly add to my weekly food shop.

Nieces and nephews I'm thinking I'll send their parents money to buy them presents.

I don't buy for a lot of people so the rest of the list is at least short. DP I have nothing for, I need ideas !!

Food shopping, I'm planning to stay up all night if necessary when Morrison's release their dates, I've got one tin of biscuits hidden in the pantry.

AdventCaroline · 03/11/2020 18:44

I haven't bought any food at all yet.

Presents bought for Dc and DH, though will need to get chocolate and sweets for stockings nearer the time

Dc like to buy their own little presents for each other, me and DH - they should be able to do it online or in the supermarket if other shops don't open again.

I've bought wrapping paper and cards, and advent calendar bits.

Beautyoftheirdreams · 03/11/2020 22:12

I'm pretty on top of it. Got my turkey in the freezer and my youngest's presents. My eldest is at her dad's over Xmas until the 27th and I'm doing her a surprise Harry Potter bedroom makeover while she's away. I have everything for it, the bed arrives next week and then I can relax until boxing day when we put it all together

NoWordForFluffy · 03/11/2020 22:35

I'm almost-done. I've a couple more bits to get, but we could have a pretty good Christmas with what I have in the house already.

I have orders from my local cheese shop, Booths and Sainsbury's on 22 Dec, so even if it's not already here, it's planned and ordered.

TheCrow · 03/11/2020 23:01

Presents for DD pretty much done- couple of things on the way and a couple still to order
Still waiting for lists from family of what they'd like.
DP- know exactly what he's getting but need to order it all
Wrapping supplies and cards all bought, definitely earlier than usual.
Food - hopefully going to manage to bag a delivery slot for the 22nd with edible goodies
Got a few crochet gifts to be cracking on with but they'll keep me busy during lockdown

All in all about half way done I think, according to my many lists 😂

micc · 03/11/2020 23:30

I normally start buying presents in October to spread the cost. I have done it again this year, I've got my DDs both all their gifts bar a couple. I got my eldest DD a few toy story action figures which cost a lot so I didnt end up getting her much else so it didnt take me long! Me and my partner are making hampers for our parents all from local shops. This would of been done in December but I'm a bit worried about them not opening again if lockdown continues. So the past couple days we have been getting a few bits together for them. My sister lives abroad so I posted her stuff with her birthday present as she wont be coming home this year. The main bits I need to sort is a few small bits for friends which I will probably make and a couple more presents for OH.
Food wise I have nooooo idea! We normally go to my parents! I need to think of a back up plan haha

IdblowJonSnow · 03/11/2020 23:37

Yep, got quite a bit done. Need to put an order in with the butcher!

MostIneptThatEverStepped · 03/11/2020 23:47

Just wondering if @NoWordForFluffy's shopping is booked and ordered? I don't think she was quite clear 😄

I'm finding this a very soothing thread to read for some reason. I've done a fair bit of shopping, mainly online, for my adult kids and DP. The rest of the family, not sure what to do in case we don't get to see each other for months 🤷🏻‍♀️

FoolShapeHeart · 03/11/2020 23:53

Pretty much done, I think. Advent calendar gifts & activities, Christmas Eve box, stockings, tree gifts & Christmas/winter birthday presents almost finished, think I've 4 small gifts & the reverse advent left. I've got in the bits I need for festive baking & craft with DC, and the food & drink that feels festive for me. Usually have a small potted tree but bought a fake one as soon as JL Christmas shop opened online! Decorations done, have an overgrown holly tree to make my wreath. Cards/wrap/tags/stamps already got or ordered. If I wasn't able to get anything else, I should still be able to pull together a lovely Advent & Christmas for DC (old enough to start 'getting it' this year) & me (absolutely love Christmas but always get stressed at leaving everything till the last minute - it's been my stress relief this year!)

Holothane · 03/11/2020 23:58

Virtually done just waiting for Morrison slots, will order cake end of November.

Titsywoo · 04/11/2020 00:10

Nothing really just 2 gifts for DD. Noone knows what they want and the last thing I am thinking about right now is xmas.

Ohtannenbaumohtannenbaum · 04/11/2020 00:58

I've ordered a couple of presents for DH, part of my DGM1 present, and I'm sorted for my DSis, DM, and DN1 and DN2.

Need to buy more for DH, DN3, DF, DGM2, FIL, MIL, SFIL, SIL+BIL

Also need to get all Christmas food but that will just be for 2 of us this year!

OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack · 04/11/2020 01:11

pretty much done present wise for the kids i buy for. Still need a few bits for other people though but thats all able to be ordered online so im not too worried about that and just waiting for delivery slots to open for food shopping. I have a parcel of presents to mail for my friend and her kids but ill do that as soon as lockdown lifts and send it by courior to get it there in time. its not heavy but its bulky so easier, cheaper and quicker to send by courior

being pretty much done by or before this point in the year is normal for me as i shop for gifts all year round as i have a lot of people to buy for

pinkksugarmouse · 04/11/2020 02:22

Now DD is older there are fewer things to buy and wrap. I have DD's 18th birthday presents and personalised card for the end of November. I have all DH's Christmas presents ordered. One has arrived and 1 ordered for DD not yet dispatched.

I had best order my Brownies their cloth badges as Christmas presents soon, most will get a I have been an online Brownie badge. My two young leaders and unit helper (and I) will get the equivalent leader one. I have only one girl who doesn't do Zoom meetings so will get her a Brownie Christmas badge with a snowman. These will go out in cards.
I usually only do cards for my pack and DH (a tradition).

Food its mostly the two of us, plus a Fussy old lady cat and a hamster so won't need lots of extras. Although when DD is here she can empty the house of food in a couple of days, she is usually with her dad.

Will order from The Vegankind supermarket in late November/early December for a few bits but mostly it will be our usual Asda/Morrisons shop. DH has ordered chocolates from hotel chocolat for himself and I know he has ordered some of the new Vegan ones for me even though he hasn't said it. Grin

We don't change decorations often as I think many people do. I am happy with the ones we have.

So haven't done much but I don't have huge amounts to buy, wrap, plan.

pinkksugarmouse · 04/11/2020 02:24

Blush Wow I shouldn't post this late under the influence of painkillers. Forgive my ramblings.

NoWordForFluffy · 04/11/2020 05:16

Bloody hell. Mumsnet at its glitchy best. Apologies (weird how it took so long to post the extra messages!). Xmas Blush

Pipandmum · 04/11/2020 05:27

Done nothing, other than did have a sort out of Christmas decorations. I only buy for immediate family (parents have passed away and I'll send flowers to my mother in law). My kids are teens so beyond wanting volume and are into quality: my son has asked for airpods, for example.
It will be a quiet Christmas just me and my kids - we have no bubble and family live too far away, though it would be nice to visit if restrictions allow.

BullBailey · 04/11/2020 05:43

Haven’t done anything, it’s only the start of November.

mam0918 · 04/11/2020 10:39

presents for kids nearly done
presents for adults about half done maybe
food not sorted at all (freezer needs defrosting and room making and some items cant be bought until days before because they arent freezable)

Noitjustwontdo · 04/11/2020 10:47

I’ve bought maybe 80% of the gifts but not concerned about the remaining ones because they’re all available on Amazon so next day delivery. Haven’t got wrapping paper as yet but will get that this week. I shop online so lockdown isn’t really affecting much.

TeenPlusTwenties · 04/11/2020 10:51

Apart from new pre-owned mobile for DD2, I am sufficiently 'done' that I could buy no more presents. This is way ahead of usual.

There are couple of things I'm waiting for Waitrose to have in, then I can wrap and send a box for my shielding parents which is the most important thing for me this year.

MostIneptThatEverStepped · 04/11/2020 10:53

@NoWordForFluffy

Don't apologise, it made me laugh! Looks like it was a Mumsnet-wide glitch last night, every thread I read had it.

BiddyPop · 04/11/2020 11:28

@Changethetoner

I bought the obligatory bags of chocolate coins - and the dog found them and ate them. So I bought them again, and made sure to put them definitely out of the dog's reach - and my husband ate them.

So, despite my efforts, not very ready at all.

I'm another who has this issue (well, DH and DD rather than DDog). So anything that is a Christmas treat is in my stores stash in the wardrobe which is mostly ignored. So I have a box of M&S choc truffle things in there - although DD has seen them but is less of a problem for Chocolate than DH.

BearSoFair · 04/11/2020 11:35

About 50% of presents bought.
New tree (artificial) ordered and due last week of November.
Started to pick up food like biscuits, 'party' (no actual parties of course!) nibbles this week. We always have chicken rather than turkey so will do a usual shop at the start of Xmas week for fresh stuff.
Already have cards, wrapping paper, and Xmas crackers left over from last year so don't need to do any buying there.
