Advice on ooni pizza ovens

diplodocusinermine · 09/10/2020 18:09

Was contemplating getting DH one of these for Christmas - more than I would usually spend on Christmas for him but he will love it.

Am tempted by the Fyra on their own website, but a couple of places have the Ooni 3 in a bundle with pellets and peel.

Can anyone advise?

Was talking about these yesterday. My colleague has one and said it’s great. It’s gas. They take it with them when they’re off in camper van. She rated it highly.

I’ve just bought a Roccbox for DD and her partner. It’s a surprise and more than I would normally spend. I hope they like it! He likes cooking pizza, DD earring it, and they like having friends round, so what’s not to like.

I went for Roccbox as couldn’t get Ooni. They’ve been sold out for months

Daughter has one, the pizzas are delicious, we have became obsessed with them. Would def recommend , You'll never look back, Ordering pizza in restaurant now ruined as not any where as good!

awaynboilyurheid · 09/10/2020 20:31

Definitely go for the Ooni

LadyIronDragon · 09/10/2020 20:31

We have a gas ooni one. It's amazing. Makes amazing pizzas (after a bit of trial and error!)

Are they available? We had to wait about 3/4 months for it come into stock.

CrazylazyJane · 09/10/2020 20:56

Excellent! DP ordered one a few months ago and got a notification last week to say it is at the warehouse, ready for dispatch Grin

Blue5238 · 09/10/2020 21:11

Don't get the Ooni 3. Pellets are a pain.... Just get a gas one (koda or pro), or a roccbox.
Though I sold my ooni and bought an effeuno 134h for pizzas year round without freezing in the rain....

ClosedAuraOpenMind · 10/10/2020 13:36

we've got an ooni - DH bought it during lockdown - and it's great
we've got the wood pellets one, and don't have any pro with it, you would need a peel anyway as that's what you slide the pizzas in and out with

diplodocusinermine · 10/10/2020 14:05

Think I'm probably more confused than ever now but thank you anyway.......Grin.

How do you make the pizza? From scratch?

andadietcoke · 10/10/2020 14:12

We have an Ooni with pellets. I love it. It was a bit of a steep learning curve but we've nailed it now.

I did say at the beginning I wished we'd got gas but now I'm used to it I prefer the pellets I think. Advantage of gas is that you can see it cooking - we have to take the door of ours and it can be a bit too much to juggle.

Neolara · 10/10/2020 14:21

We have a gas one and it's brilliant. Pizzas cook in 1-2 minutes.

diplodocusinermine · 10/10/2020 14:53

With the gas ones do they just connect to a normal BBQ gas bottle?

Following with interest Smile

WhatWouldJKRDo · 10/10/2020 15:49

I love my pellets Ooni but it is a faff. I enjoy it - I see it as recreational rather than a chore. There’s definitely a heck of a learning curve. But I’m the kind of purist that won’t have a gas BBQ.

I would say unless you think he’ll have fun with the challenges of cooking with wood, I’d go for gas. It’s simple, less mess, less that’s likely to go wrong.

Holdingtherope · 10/10/2020 17:11

I've just bought one, the gas one. I like the 60 day guarantee thing!

LadyIronDragon · 10/10/2020 20:02

Yeah it connects to a normal gas cannister. The oven heats up super hot and like a PP said, cooks the pizza in a minute or two. It's like magic! We bought a peel from Amazon, not an Ooni one.

Cherry321 · 10/10/2020 20:15

We have a ooni that does pellet or gas. The gas is great but the Pellet is a bit quicker and has an amazing flavour. Either way it’s fab. Can also recommend cooking chorizo in red wine in it. Yum.

GoBackToPartyCity · 11/10/2020 16:44

I have an ooni 3 and have been using pellets. It’s absolutely fine with pellets if you’re cooking for 2/3 but any more pizzas and it cools down quite a bit. I also bought the gas converter but never used it.

I absolutely love it and haven’t regretted getting it at all!

buckeejit · 11/10/2020 17:43

Fil ordered one for us & was a real surprise when it arrived about a month ago! I think it was because I said dh made the best pjzza, (true)

It's the pellet one & I thought we'd need gas but it's been great. We've taken it to the beach to make pizza when staying with friends!

I did buy another pee with long handle from amazon.

Pumpkintopf · 11/10/2020 22:13

@Blue5238 - are you my DH?! This is exactly what he's just done 😂

Op DH recommends you swing by Ooni Enthusiasts UK forum on Facebook- lots of helpful advice although you will find the community very split between wood and gas (almost as divisive as whether you should ever put pineapple on a pizza 😉)

Karwomannghia · 13/10/2020 08:56

I’m getting interested in this now we’re confined to the garden for socialising! But once you’ve got the oven, how do you make the pizza? Do you have to make the dough etc yourself? Or buy ready made dough?

buckeejit · 13/10/2020 09:22

Pizza dough is so easy to make! Strong flour, oil, yeast, salt & water

I'd like to take this opportunity to recommend a newly discovered topping if Gorgonzola, chorizo & chilli. Sooo good

mrscampbellblackagain · 13/10/2020 09:25

We have the pellet one but on the two occasions my DH has used it the pizzas have been both burnt and raw! What are we doing wrong?

We also have a big green egg and it is much easier to use although quite a bit more £££

diplodocusinermine · 13/10/2020 10:09

Aaaaggghhh - just ordered the Koda. Now waits for DH to decide to go low carb and pizza's off the menu! (unlikely Grin).

Isn't it strange how certain forms of cooking are male dominated - Pumpkintopf that facebook page is brilliant.
