MAC Advent Calendar

Pennybubbly · 07/10/2020 10:25

As a special treat this year, I was planning to buy DD the MAC Advent calendar - whenever it is finally on sale.
However I jut watched a YouTube review of last year's and everyone in the comments was saying what a rip-off it is, it's full of samples etc etc and the damning reviews have made me rethink big time.
Any experience?

Anyone? Smile

I’ve never bought one but I can’t really see how it could be anything other than samples etc

MAC products are expensive so 25 full sized items would be a fortune and they’re not going to produce that many miniatures just for a calendar

Also, unlike a lot of other beauty calendars where there’s a huge range of products that can be included, MAC only sell cosmetics so the options are limited

RainbowRaine · 07/10/2020 13:22

Will be interested to read from anyone who had last years.

Mac sells skincare, fragrance and also general beauty accessories like brushes, bags, tweezers etc.

Personally I don’t think Mac is expensive. There’s much more higher end prices in the beauty world. I would rather spend the money you’d invest on the calendar on full price MAC products in the exact shades/formulations that you want instead. I know there seems to be a range of colours but 1. You don’t know whether the products are sheer or shimmery etc, some products might be unsuitable/not be best quality and 2. The shades may not suit her

Bearbehind · 07/10/2020 13:52

I was thinking of things like shampoo, conditioner, shower gels etc which are fillers in advent calendars with other brands

Totally agree about spending the money on products you want rather than an advent calendar - they are generally always going to be quite gimmicky and only good value if you like and will use everything in it

Bearbehind · 07/10/2020 13:54

I take it all back!

Having just looked at the 2020 one I think it looks much nicer than the 2019 and is cheaper than last years too!

Quite tempted myself 😂

Frappuccinofan · 07/10/2020 14:36

Yes this year’s definitely looks better than last year’s - looks like they took the feedback on board

Cherryrainbow · 07/10/2020 14:45

It looks like a lot of the eyeshadow are full size and the lipsticks are mini. I had a mini lipstick mac set last year and I have to say they do last a long time, great colours and great to pop in a bag for topping up whilst in town etc. The set itself does look good, better than some other makeup advents I've seen x

Pennybubbly · 08/10/2020 03:55

Thanks for all your input..... but now I'm thoroughly undecided again!
Might go for it after all. DD is 16 so would probably like a range of smaller items to try rather than a couple of full sized products, as I don't know if she knows what she likes yet.

Maybe the Glossybox advent calendar? There's more variety.

Pennybubbly · 09/10/2020 04:55

Looks like Glossy ox has already sold out Wink

Ahh. I'm sorry. It's only just been released!

If becomes available again I'll give you a nudge. It was really good last year.

Frappuccinofan · 09/10/2020 14:18

The Selfridges calendar looks amazing. I already own about 50% of the contents so wasn’t going to buy, but was still surprised at how quickly it sold out !

Pennybubbly · 13/10/2020 10:57

Thanks Sapnupuas Grin
Yes - it seems to be that way with a lot of Advent Calendars and the note on the MAC website (saying only 1 calendar per household) seems to suggest they think it will sell out quickly too.
Still undecided as to what to do but leaning more towards buying it - if I can!

@Pennybubbly I was going to get the MAC one but decided against it, lots of eyeshadow and lip colours that will never get used.

Pennybubbly · 14/10/2020 06:15

Thanks Rainbow..... argh, now I'm back to not wanting it. Although it is for DD 16 so maybe she'd like to faff around with colors I wouldn't choose.... Grin

OP, I’d get her the MAC advent calendar, teen girls love MAC, and usually the make up is outside their price range. I used to love MAC products as a late teenager and so did my friends.

lhmua12 · 14/10/2020 21:30

Is Mac still popular with today’s teenagers? I’m 22 and don’t think Mac is as popular as it was years ago; it has been overshadowed by Morphe, Huda Beauty, ABH etc.

I guarantee your daughter has a list of other makeup she really wants that she has seen on social media or that her friends talk about so I’m not sure if the Mac calendar would necessarily hit the spot.

Feckmesideways · 14/10/2020 23:13

@lhmua12 Shock thanks for making me feel old, I’m only 30... anyway I thought it was still popular as it’s a cult brand. I’m clearly out of touch it seems.

Op, ask your daughter and see what she’s interested in. There could be a specific palette from a certain brand she’s after that could cost more than half the price of the advent calendar, but bring her more joy.

Pommes · 14/10/2020 23:22

The No7 calendar is out tomorrow.

lhmua12 · 14/10/2020 23:32

@Feckmesideways you’re not old! With social media and “beauty influencers”, the makeup industry is highly saturated and trends change very frequently. It’s hard to keep up! That’s not to say eg Mac eyeshadows aren’t good - but as you mentioned she might have a palette in mind from another brand that’s “the one”.

OP, I making your own 12 day advent calendar for her (or just a personalised stocking) could be fun if you can get a hold of her wish list.

Kapalika · 15/10/2020 01:45

Look Fantastic have got a few, although their own one is sold out.

I like Rituals myself!

Pennybubbly · 15/10/2020 05:54

She does like MAC, though to be honest she's not a huge make up fan...
We're outside the UK and brands that are popular there are not as known here.
I know she'd be thrilled if I bought it - it was just the meh reviews I'd read of last year's AC that we're making me unsure.

@Pennybubbly have a look at the body shop ones, I know my teen will use everything from the £50 calendar.

Pennybubbly · 15/10/2020 08:48

Thanks Rainbow. She loves anything mango flavoured so you could be into something there
