Best mint chocolates

After 8 mints were our go to but last year they were inferior so I'm looking for an alternative. What are your recommendations? We've tried m&s mint creams - too strong on the mint flavour, and their after dinner stick things. I think we've tried both Asda and Tesco versions of after eights but they didn't hit the spot. Lindt mint truffles are too sweet and creamy. Fussy we are! I just want as close to after 8s like they used to be. Cruz peppermint creams are lovely but I'm after bite sized for the sweet bowl.

Not mint cremes, but my Dad always loves the Elizabeth Shaw chocolate mints, nicely wrapped for a sweet bowl too.

I like Thornton's Luxury Dinner Mints. The peppermint creme centre is quite firm compared to the soft fondant centre of After Eights. There are also some mint cracknel pieces in the dark chocolate covering. Impossible to eat just one, though.

Fry’s Mint Cream is the closest I’ve found, although you’d need a bar each!

mamakoukla · 22/09/2020 19:10

Bendick’s bittermints. Strong dose of peppermint oil in a well balanced fondant, enrobed in dark chocolate which is a perfect foil for the filling. Eat in slow bites allowing to melt in mouth. I find Elizabeth Shaw, Fry’s etc too sweet

Jackparlabane · 22/09/2020 19:13

Bendicks - either bittermints or their mint selection.

notso · 22/09/2020 19:19

Another vote for Bendicks bittermints.
Also I once had a mint selection from Thornton's that had some decent ones.

Tolleshunt · 22/09/2020 19:27

Yep, Bendicks Bittermints. Please let them never ‘improve’ the recipe.

Fivemoreminutes1 · 22/09/2020 19:29

Viscount mint chocolate biscuits are individually wrapped and work well for after dinner.
These are also amazing www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/306478513
I’ve seen these but haven’t tried them.... yet! www.thorntons.co.uk/chocolate-bags/bag-of-luxury-dinner-mints-77173635.html#q=Mint&start=1

Lindt do an amazing bar.

Dozer · 22/09/2020 19:34

What’ve they done to After Eights? Shock

Hate the American chemists ruining chocolate! Angry

lexloofah · 22/09/2020 20:42

For Christmas definitely Bendicks, look out for the occasional discount, usually a few times a year so worth buying then.

Tini17 · 22/09/2020 21:40

Bendicks! Definitely. Yummy 😋

Aria2015 · 22/09/2020 21:56

Mint matchmakers!!!

drigon · 22/09/2020 21:59

Thornton's are really delicious.

Candleabra · 22/09/2020 22:02

Benedick's, either bittermints for the full hit or a more mellow variety box of their mint selection. Yum.
I love mint chocolate which is well known in the family but my ungrateful heart sinks when I open another package of the travesty that has become after eights.

timegoesbysoslowly · 22/09/2020 22:03

This post reminds me how much I miss Mingles, why did Bendicks discontinue them. The highlight of Christmas

mammmamia · 22/09/2020 22:07

I like Benedicks but the variety of the mixed pack, whatever it’s called. I couldn’t just have the bitter mints. I also like the Elizabeth Shaw ones, and obviously mint match makers!

InTheShadowOfTheMushroomCloud · 22/09/2020 22:13

I second mint matchmakers - £1 a box in Tesco

I didn't buy three boxes today...

mammmamia · 22/09/2020 22:13

The Elizabeth shaw mint flutes are good too!

Fumnudge · 22/09/2020 22:14

They need to bring back mint forrero rocher. Liquid mint centre was heavenly, no silly nuts ruining my hit.
I enjoyed m & s mint selection box but mainly milk chocolate so no use as an after eight alternative, Sainsbury's chocolate covered mint creams are v v nice.

mammmamia · 22/09/2020 22:14

In my local Tesco express matchmakers are 75p!!

Another vote for Bendicks Bittermints. I remember as a very little girl seeing my granny with a box. I asked about them and she said very firmly that I wouldn't like them. I think I managed to persuade her that I might like them Grin and with great reluctance she gave me one to try. I adored it. Lifelong love of Bittermints started right there. Every Christmas I buy myself a box and hide it from everyone else, as the rest of the family can take or leave them. I'm like Gollum with my precious Bittermints.
