Best mint chocolates

After 8 mints were our go to but last year they were inferior so I'm looking for an alternative. What are your recommendations? We've tried m&s mint creams - too strong on the mint flavour, and their after dinner stick things. I think we've tried both Asda and Tesco versions of after eights but they didn't hit the spot. Lindt mint truffles are too sweet and creamy. Fussy we are! I just want as close to after 8s like they used to be. Cruz peppermint creams are lovely but I'm after bite sized for the sweet bowl.

I see I've started something here! My nana used to have the Elizabeth shaw mints wrapped in the gold foil. They were nice. I like a fondant centre though. Waitrose do mint thins/crisps and some kind of fondant type ones so I'll try those. It might have been Asda that did chocolate crisp thins like Pringles that were amazing. I remember orange ones and another flavour. I loved the Pringle shape of them. They might not have been Asda's brand but I can't think who made them unless it was tesco perhaps.

Bendicks definitely. If they’re good enough for The Queen...

Quackersandcheese3 · 23/09/2020 00:09

I had Thornton’s mint selection and markies mint selection boxes. Both good. I did love mingles back in the day x

MeOnSea · 23/09/2020 00:20

If you’re not fussed about fondant and like dark chocolate, someone gave me these and they were beautiful www.summerdownmint.com/shop/peppermint-chocolates/chocolate-mint-thins/?gclid=CjwKCAjwwab7BRBAEiwAapqpTO7cdTwxdKpowKwJr8kqtsXGTroKgQTHK5SZntI2CBD2oAWxdLdkTxoChHIQAvD_BwE

AuditAngel · 23/09/2020 00:24

I’m a Bendick’s bitter mintiest girl too (and i hide them.)

SistemaAddict · 23/09/2020 00:24

It seems I'm going to have to buy some of each and test them all Grin

The ones from Poundland made in Yorkshire I can scoff a full box easily www.whitakerschocolates.com/product-category/boxes-of-chocolates/

Bittermints are gorgeous, but not really a substitute for After Eights, and especially not for someone who finds the M&S mint creamd too minty. I'd start off by seeing if you can find some own brand After Eights - Aldi chocolate is generally really good quality, and I think I've had Aldi ones before.

Apparently the Lindt mint chocolate balls are amazing, I buy them for a family member who likes mint chocs & they say they're the best

Danglingmod · 23/09/2020 16:31

Sainsbury's do an own brand one too.

My favourite Christmas mint chocs are the M&S selection box, the Thorntons one or the Bendicks one.

amieejust · 23/09/2020 16:33

Aldi's Moser Roth mint chocolate is the best!!

WellTidy · 23/09/2020 16:36

I will eat anything minty, but the Bendicks big variety box is the business. Bittermints are my favourite, but I will happily eat all of a Bendicks mixed box. I don't have refined tastes though - mint matchmakers or after eights dunked in hot coffee do it for me too.

AGnu · 23/09/2020 16:42

Sainsbury's version of After Eights is the best I've found - just the right chocolate to mint ratio. I can't buy them anymore though, I have no self control & can eat an entire box in under 5 minutes which my digestive system doesn't appreciate...!

DisgruntledGuineaPig · 23/09/2020 17:29

I like both Sainsburys version of after eights, and Waitrose own brand mint chocolates are delicious.

Not helpful for you, but my favourite are the mint truffles from our local hand made chocolate shop. Only for super posh dinner parties or christmas dinner as they are stupidly expensive. Might go treat myself this weekend and eat them sat in my jammies, its not like I'm spending money on anything else these days... (oh god, just remembered they do some lime chocolate cremes that are fabulous but obscenely expensive. Fuck it, im spending my party dress budget on chocolates!)

VirginiaWolverine · 23/09/2020 17:49

Actually, the best Christmas chocolates are these, but you have to make them.

Divine do fairtrade mint thins just like After 8s.
You can get them in Oxfam.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 23/09/2020 18:02

I don't like fondant mints. Bloody love Elizabeth Shaw dark choc with the crispy bits in. They're the adult version of chocolate coins.

Mint with milk chocolate is vile.

thistimelastweek · 23/09/2020 18:06

The Sainsbury version of after eights is superb. And cheap.
The ratio of mint to chocolate is just right.

Jamhandprints · 23/09/2020 18:12

Aldi fake after eights are good. Mint matchmakers also.
What are those round ones that come in a circle with brown and green wrappers? Theyre nice too.

Chasingsquirrels · 23/09/2020 18:16

@Bercows

It seems I'm going to have to buy some of each and test them all Grin
That's made me laugh!

Also liked Aldi ripoff after eights (after 8 just doesn't look right, I wondered what you meant at first!)

FOKKYFC · 23/09/2020 18:17

Bendick's Bittermints are the closest thing to a religious experience I've ever had.
