At the risk of sounding like a moron, what mixer is best with gin (and port)?!?

OP posts:

Tonic with gin. Port doesn't need a mixer.

CointreauVersial · 23/12/2019 22:14

Tonic. But buy a decent one (e.g. Fever Tree). Port is best drunk neat.

Ffsnosexallowed · 23/12/2019 22:15

Brandy with port.

mrsanflowerpot · 23/12/2019 22:28

Tonic 🤢. Never had with gin...really?!?

Bitter lemon is good with gin

IndianaMoleWoman · 23/12/2019 22:32

Blue WKD with port, if you’re going back to 1999.

RudolphIsMySpiritAnimal · 23/12/2019 22:33

Tonic is the classic mixer for gin, not sure what the sick gave is for?

RudolphIsMySpiritAnimal · 23/12/2019 22:35

Sick face, even.

ThreeFish · 23/12/2019 22:36

You’ve honestly never heard of Gin and Tonic?
I despair.

crankyhousewife · 23/12/2019 22:36

I have lemonade with gin as I can't stand tonic.

Khione · 23/12/2019 22:37

gin and champagne - or cava or prosecco

gin and dry vermouth - or sweet or cinzano

Ninkanink · 23/12/2019 22:42

Which gin?

I’ve got Opihr at the moment and tonight I had some with a Santori tonic with hibiscus which was very nice indeed. I also really like it with fever tree aromatic tonic (angostura, cardamom, ginger and a few other aromatics) plus a slice of orange - it has quite a Christmassy feel.

Gin can also be nice with lemonade.

mrspotatohed · 23/12/2019 22:44

Elderflower tonic and fresh mint leaves

Ninkanink · 23/12/2019 22:45

Ohhhh yes elderflower is nice too.

mrsanflowerpot · 23/12/2019 22:48

I'm just rubbish with tonic (or sparkling water 🤢). My mum who died at 43 was a gin drinker and feel I should have some to raise a glass for her now we're in the gin age!

RudolphIsMySpiritAnimal · 23/12/2019 22:52

Oh, I see. Sorry for your loss. Thanks

Lemonade then?

Cineraria · 23/12/2019 22:56

If you really don't like tonic, you could try something citrus based with your gin, like a fizzy or still lemon or lime drink.

Port is really nicest on its own, especially if you have a good one but l do have a soft spot for a port and lemon(ade) with a chunky slice of lemon squeezed into it, especially at Christmas. That's my mum's favourite and was probably the first taste I had of alcohol as a result.

DeRigueurMortis · 23/12/2019 23:11

I love a G&T but gin and bitter lemon is lovely if you don't like tonic.

You could also go the cocktail route and have a negroni (gin, Campari and vermouth) or a Tom Collins - gin, fresh lemon juice, simple syrup (basically sugar and water - easy to make) and soda water.

DeRigueurMortis · 23/12/2019 23:15

Oops I missed you don't like sparking water so scrub the Tom Collins.

A dirty gin martini? Gin, vermouth and a touch of green olive brine served with green olives on a cocktail skewer (or stick).

Modestandatinybitsexy · 23/12/2019 23:27

If you're giving tonic a miss then bitter lemon is the way to go. Port is drunk straight in our house unless it's with brandy.

RaininSummer · 23/12/2019 23:28

I love tonic but my daughter is allergic to it so puts cranberry juice with gin.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 23/12/2019 23:29

Port is straight - I don't like tonic either, so gin is always flavoured and with lemonade Smile

festivefrustration · 23/12/2019 23:29

Definitely lemonade!

Or buy a nice raspberry gin liquer (sp?) and have with Prosecco.

Ninkanink · 24/12/2019 00:05

You could get a rhubarb and ginger gin liquor instead.

Ninkanink · 24/12/2019 00:06

Also, I’m sorry for your loss. Flowers
